Time to move on

Anfield the home of Liverpool Football Club, the ground has so many famous moments so many fantastic European nights so many fantastic supporters but soon it all may come to an end.

Liverpool Football Club has a soul searching dilemma do they try and stay at Anfield and hope the stadium can be redeveloped or move to a new and bigger stadium, every Liverpool fan deep down wants to remain at Anfield but the reality is that Liverpool Football Club has out grown Anfield and it is now a time to move on.

All Liverpool supporters want the club to develop and become the team we all want Liverpool to be, but this dream of being a consistent top two team we all pray for will not happen simply because we need to be in a financial position to command the best players in the world and at present we are miles away from even becoming a top three team, Liverpool have to move with the times and not be caught up in old sentiment towards Anfield.

A move away from Anfield will not only provide Liverpool Football Club with extra money from ticket sales which in turn will provide the funds to afford top quality players, but will benefit the whole of Liverpool itself, the building of the stadium will generate thousands of jobs for local Liverpool people, I hope that whoever gets the contract to build the new stadium has to offer the local people the job first before looking elsewhere, Liverpool people are not work shy in fact its work that is shy in Liverpool.

FSG must realise by now that a redevelopment of Anfield is sadly unrealistic and cannot produce the funds needed to propel Liverpool into the next phase of rebuilding both the team and the club, what Liverpool Football Club must not become is a faceless club with a stadium that lacks atmosphere and heart, but is full of supports with song in their hearts and a place where travelling away fans and players wish to come and experience.

Anfield will always be in every Liverpool supporter’s heart and that will never go but as a club who wants success, it’s time to move on.

Let Us Go Forward Together!

This has definitely been one of the strangest seasons I have ever seen. By November 2010, I really couldn’t wait for the season to be over and to look to be able to look to the summer months hoping that they would bring in some new exciting signings to help re build the team. Now, five months later and I don’t want our season to end as we are playing some of the most enjoyable, attacking football I have seen since 2008/2009 season when we finished second.

When Rafa Benitez ended his reign during the summer of 2010 I have to say, I was filled with optimism when Roy Hodgson came in. Now before you slate me for saying this, I was basing this on what I had seen the previous season. I thought that Hodgson had done a great job at Fulham and would hopefully bring some good fortune and fresh players in to Anfield. He had gone into the transfer window and had signed some players who I was excited to see play such as Joe Cole and Milan Jovanovic.

How wrong I was. Hodgson’s time at the helm of Anfield was rightfully short lived after the lacklustre performances in the first half of the season. By this point, there was only one man who could step in and save Liverpool Football Club’s season. Every Liverpool fan around the world was crying out for Kenny Dalglish to return as manager in January.

The recent results that we have had such as the destruction of the Manchester teams, the 5-0 thumping of Birmingham and the ever satisfying defeat of Chelsea 1-0 have restored happy times to Liverpool Football Club. The very way the players go about their job’s on the pitch is truly magnificent. We have seen four local lads break through into the first team this year and this is all thanks to the academy and  to Kenny Dalglish for giving them the confidence and saying that he believed they could do it. Furthermore, the way Dalglish talks in the post match interviews just shows how much he cares for Liverpool. He constantly refers to how great the result was for ‘the football club’ showing how he is unifying the whole club.

The signings of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll in January were a statement of intent from the owners. They are obviously willing to inject the much needed money to invest in new players to help take Liverpool back to the force that we should be. These two fantastic signings we made in January have been immensely pleasing to watch. Suarez has an incredible amount of skill and has set up many goals in the short amount of time he has been here for. Any Carroll showed why he is such a great player against Man City stunning the crowd with two fantastic goals. Also, the way no one can challenge him in the air is a great asset to have in the forward line.

With all this in mind, I am thoroughly looking forward to the final games of the season as unlike in November I am excited for the next game to come along. I can also only hope that the owners are putting together a deal for Dalglish to allow him to remain permanently at Anfield as he has done an amazing job in the time that he has been here. Finally, I am really looking forward to the summer and seeing which players are bought to strengthen our squad.

The Redmen’s beginner’s guide to Anfield

Happy Birthday L.F.C. 15th March 1892

By Kim Stringfellow

When asked what religion I follow, my answer is always Football, my church being Anfield, if you look back at Liverpool FC’s early history, you’ll see I’m not far from the truth, because, in the very early days, as St Domingo’s, an amateur side, created in the belief that to keep young men on the religious path, a good healthy game of competitive football was all that was needed. This team, with a new name ended up playing at one of the Football League’s original grounds, Anfield. But, it wasn’t under the name Liverpool FC, no, it was actually Everton FC that started off playing at Anfield, on a plot of land owned by John Houlding, Tory MP, Mayor of Liverpool, future founder of Liverpool FC and the one who ultimately caused Everton FC to move from Anfield to Goodison. He was a brewer and owned a pub, The Sandon, which, on match days, the team would use as a dressing room, having to walk through crowds of people just to get onto the pitch, much to the boards dislike, as it seemed Houlding was making money from the players, who were drinking his ale, in his pub, but also from the club for the rent on the land. In 1889/90, the rent for the ground had risen to £250, from £100 in 1884 when they first started renting the land to play on. After the members of the Everton board “offering” Houlding less rent, he refused. On 12th March 1892 Houlding and Everton FC parted ways. The board and most of the members walked out. Houlding and his close friend Barclay, who had been the first secretary for Everton FC had a meeting at Houldings house on 15th March 1892, where it was decided that football would continue at Anfield and Barclay suggested that they should take the name of the city as the clubs name, not just a suburb from the city. Houlding tried some kind of legal take over of Everton by registering a plc with the name but the Football league refused to let two teams with the same name play in the league. Hence Liverpool FC being formed. In 1894 the club adopted the City’s colours and in 1901 adopted the Liverbird as the crest. McKenna had stayed loyal to Houlding, and was to be a director at the club for 30 years, during which time, he served the club as chairman twice, was a member of the FA Council from 1905 and became President of the Football League in 1910 and Vice President in 1928.

Liverpool’s first application to join the league was rejected so they started out in Lancashire League, their first match was on the 1st September 1892, against Rotherham from the middle league, which we won, 7-1 with McVeaan scoring the first ever Liverpool goal early in the first half. Our first game in the Football League was 2nd September 1893, which we won, we also went on to win the League in our first season in it.

This club has had some great highs and some even lower lows, but Liverpool FC always comes good in the end. Our motto, You’ll Never Walk Alone, means just that, if you are a true red, you will never be alone out there, no matter where you are, you will always find another LFC fan somewhere near by. We always pull together when the going gets rough. I think we’ve got a rough couple of seasons ahead of us, but we will pull through, we just have to believe.
