We’re Not English, We Are Scouse

Posted by

There’s been lots of talk about Liverpool needing to buy British this summer, with only two members of our starting eleven hailing from the country where football originated. The question I keep asking myself is why? Why do we need to buy English?

Now we know about Uefa have been hinting about the idea about a set number of players needing to be from the clubs country but I think this is unrealistic. Whilst it may be backed by foreign clubs in weaker leagues the clubs in the Premiership won’t have it. The only reason this rule would be implimented would be to try and stop English clubs dominating in Europe as they have done for a number of years. The richest league in the world have considerable influence over UEFA decisions and will ensure that this rule is never put in places, which makes the argument that we should buy English less valid.

Another problem I have with English players is they are expensive, really expensive. It seems that as soon as a player has had a couple of games in the England team their value goes up by about £5 million. A prime example of this is Stuart Downing over at Middlesbrough. From what I’ve seen of him, which is a lot, he’s about as good, if not worse than our Spanish winger Albert Riera. Yet because England have called him up a number of times to player on the left, a very weak position in the England squad, he’s worth £15 million plus whilst Riera isn’t worth more than £10 million.

We’re not a patriotic club, we’re not a patriotic city, that’s another reason why we should be looking at English players ust because they are English. We’re Liverpool, we’re proud to be from this city because of all its been through. This is a city that was crippled by a Conservative English government under Thatcher, why should we be patriotic?

In my opinion the future for us is in our youth team. We’ve seen some brilliant players come through it, a large number being Scouse reds and reds from around the country who want to give their all for the club. we need to see more Gerrard’s, Owen’s and Carragher’s, even if some were Blues at birth!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against buying English players, I’m just against buying them just because they are English. if an English player is the best fit for the position then snap him up, but if he isn’t don’t just pay an extortionate price for him if there’s a better, cheaper player from somewhere else in the world.

  1. I do agree but I think johnson will be a cracking transfer and uefas idea is rubbish the premier league wouldn’t be as good

  2. We DO need england trained players. Under UEFA rules, we must register 8 out of 25 players in the Euro comps who have been trained at the same nation as the host club. They must train for 3 years between the ages of 16-21 I think.

We all know the importance of squads in todays game so english trained players are needed so we are not thin on the ground during the later champ league stages.

Those are astonishing remarks Michael which only highlights the “chip on the shoulder” mentality that Scousers seem to be born with!

Yes, Liverpool was crippled by Thatcher and her heartless colleagues, so was most of the rest of the country. Are you going to propose for all those cities to secede because they “are not English”?

You’re correct about the EUFA proposal however, I agree with your comments. As Antoine said, it will be challenged and most probably defeated in the European courts. The only chance they will have of it succeeding may be if it only apply to non European players. And that’s a very big maybe.

I read your comments – I was born in Liverpool, brought up in Liverpool and have lived & worked in Liverpool for a good part of my life but have travelled to other parts of the UK and worked and lived too. The bottom line for me is I have no feeling for England at all, I don’t feel English and only have a sense of pride and amazing feelings when I cross the sign that says Liverpool. We are a unique group of people – we don’t have chips on our shoulders as many not from the City think we have. What we do have is a massive commraderie spirit for the good and for the bad – we come together in times of need and show our distaste for those who mess with us. One of my friends has researched the ancient celts who lived on the peninsular of the wirral and in what is Liverpool now – they too were there own people with a anti feeling for the rest of what was Britain. Its in our blood its in our roots – we are scousers first !! Living in Hampshire as I do now finds me homing in on the Scousers down here – we get together, we talk together, we drink together – basically we just like that feeling of being culturally different – with our wit, our timing and our distain for anything remotely English. My international team is Spain – why well its simple would your ever support a national team with wayne rooney in it !!
    Best wishes anyway
    Geoff

  5. Well Geoff at least you don’t mind admitting that Scousers are born with anti British feelings in their blood. It could be the reason why the rest of Britain has so little respect for anything Scouse! If you have a “disdain for anything remotely English” it’s no wonder that the English have so much disdain in return. It also seems that it’s not only the English that you are anti, you must also be anti fellow Scousers with your comment about Wayne Rooney. What are you going to do when Rafa moves on and LFC gets an English manager? I suppose that you will put your anti English sentiments to one side.
    Cheers

  6. Frank I feel like Geoff, The Club always comes first over any country.

I am supporting Spain for the reason that they have 5 players in their squad.

Although I am a Maltese American if Spain had to play against Malta or the USA I will also support.

Always the team with the most Reds.

  7. Mate, that is totally illogical. First of all, your country should ALWAYS come before your club. I have been away from Malta for 52 years yet I will support it against any other country except Australia with whom I was part of the team (as an official NOT as a player)for 12 years. Secondly, if Rafa sells one or two Spaniards and someone like England or Argentina ends up with the most Reds, are you going to change your allegiance every couple of years? Are you ignoring your “legend” Steven Gerrard or fellow Scouse Wayne Rooney in the England team? No wonder the Scouser mentality is so screwed up!

  8. Frank, you just don’t get it.

I’m not giving the ‘We are Scouse’ argument as my main argument for buying British, I’m just saying that as a fanbase we really aren’t too bothered about where our players come from. Now look at a club like West Ham, they’re a club that are very patriotic and have links with the England team. Their fans expect them to sign English players, ours don’t.

I’m not against signing English players, I just think that they are on the whole over-price, especially when they’ve played at top-flight international level.

I would much rather sign a player from somewhere else around the world with similar ability to an English player if it means saving a few million, I just don’t ‘get’ the buy English thing.

No Scousers are ‘Anti-England’ as you seem to think, we’re just not all that patriotic.

  9. Oh and by the way, it’s got nothing to do with the players, if we had a team full of English players you’d find that most Scousers still aren’t patriotic. This is an off the field thing that has been round for years, not an on the field thing.

  10. Frank you are the one who is screwed up and that is why you support Manure.

    L.F.C. first, everything else second.

I not a huge fan of International Football, I prefer club football anyways.

International Football is doomed anyways, I give it 20-50 more years.

  11. Michael, please read my response to you again. There was never any argument about the pros and cons of buying English players. I was only critical of the “We’re Not English, We Are Scouse” sentiment. Geoff then followed up with comments like the Scousers “disdain for anything remotely English”. That mentality is totally crazy. If that’s the case why does a proud Scouser like Stevie G bother to don the white shirt of England?

  12. Antoine, I can very easily say that Liverpool fans are the screwed up ones for blindly supporting a club that has not won a championship for 19 years. Oh yes I forgot, we’re gunna do it next year, you must be absolutely sick of saying that, year after year since 1990!

International football doomed? Are you crazy? It’s the cherry on top of the club football cake which will only get stronger as the game expands throughout the world.

  13. How many of you Non Glory Hunters have been supporting your club since 1958 like I have even though Manchester United was virtually left without a team when death did do us apart?

  14. Liverpool through & through.
Liverpool have gone 19 years without getting there hands on the prem which is long enough.
But when man ure went 26 years without winning it 19 years now doesnt seem so bad.
Man ure are now going to go in free fall now that there oneman team as gone.
Slur Alex as upset Rafa bigtime and our last 10 games of the season just go to show how great we can be and are going to be.
Slur Alex is a manager with no class and he as upset Rafa bigtime.
Man ure your time as passed
    Liverpool your time is now.

  15. Most of us ‘Non Glory Hunters’ have Fathers,Grandparents,Uncles who’ve supported the club through thick and thin for donkeys years.
We’ve also got family members who are the same with the Blues, poor things!

Man Utd were Champions in 1958 and the disaster evoked a lot of sympathy from outsiders and attracted more fans from outside the city and country too.
I’m not saying that’s wrong but it’s just the way it was and has continued to be.

Man U may be the biggest financially, but we are the most famous. Because of the way our fans embraced all of the different cultures when we played in Europe over the years. We made friends not enemies! Particularly behind the Iron Curtain and in Scandinavia.
Our non allegiance to England is also due to the reason we are called scousers, after the stew dish which contains many different ingredients as we are from many different ancestries. My own has big Irish and Scottish influences.
We were also the biggest port in the world at one time and most other places would be villages and towns if they weren’t able to get their supplies through the port of Liverpool, including a place down the East Lancs Road!

  16. Frank two things here. Dont forget that we are the best club in football history with Man u only catching up now. Ever wonder how even without winning the league in those many years we stil remain hold one of the top slots in footbal today. I am sure just like anyone else you enjoy watching Liverpool play. Last season we played the best footbal in england and actually came out with the best stats through and through. While others ran around chasing which team has won a cup we will always be with the most succesful team in English footbal. YWNA and remember the COP rules.

  17. Frank I’ve supported Liverpool all my life (18 years) and I’ll continue to do so until the day I die. I don’t care if I haven’t seen Liverpool lift a league title, even if we don’t in my lifetime I’ll still be a red through and through.

For me anyone who claims to support their country over their club isn’t a true fan of their club. Clubs should come first. It should be your passion. I go to the game every other weekend, I’m in the city all the time and I live and breath Liverpool.

On the other hand England play once every few months, they put a weakened team out half time and I truly believe most of the fans who follow them everywhere are scum who give the country I come from a bad name by causing problems everywhere they go.

Liverpool fans don’t have that problem, yes we’ve had problems like Heysel in the past but ask the people of Barcelona, Madrid, Dortmund, Istanbul and even for the post part Athens and they’ll tell you we respect the local culture and embrace it. That’s another reason I don’t care for international football or giving English players international priority.

As far as Gerrard is concerned he considers it an honour to be selected for the national team, it shows just how good he is. I’d play for England, I’d give my all for the international team if I was a footballer but as a fan I don’t support them and I’m not patriotic in the slightest.

  18. Owen i am a true Reds fan and have been for the past 25yrs but the i beleive country comes first. Now that is called patriotism. Your roots identify who you are and country is where we all come from

  19. There have been some good, sensible comments here without the need for resorting to profanities which is the way that these sort of discussions should always be.

Yes Craig I went through every on of those 26 years and has experienced the frustration of them. That is why I can understand completely how you guys must be feeling. Are United in freefall? Time will tell if their time has passed but remember, that sort of wjshful thinking has been around for years.

Let’s see Antoine, you were born in 1969 which would have seen you go through the Liverpool glory years. Are you sure that there was not a little bit of subconscious glory hunting by yourself?

As for making enemies overseas John, United have no more and no less than Liverpool or other clubs.

Your last comment was right on the money Preech but please don’t anyone get me wrong. Your loyalty to LFC can only be admired.

  20. Hi, I’ve just come across this post and it intrigues me, that alot of you say you’re not English your Scouse, or at least Scouse first, which I respect. Reading through the posts I guess I can understand why you thing like this. But do fans of Everton or indeed the general populace of Merseyside feel the same as you?

Do excuse my ignorance as I’m from the south of England and haven’t come across this sort of anti-English sentiment from within English borders, other than Cornwall, lol.

  21. Totally agree, Coming from Newcastle I have no connection with England. I am geordie not English, this counrty has done nothing for me or Newcastle. Argentina forever!!
