My Kit

The most radiant beautiful red I have ever seen.

I keep catching myself staring at it. It really is perfect. Adidas really did a bang up job, managing to produce such quality. But the thing I like most is the way I feel when I wear it.

I told myself ” Dave, now we only get to wear it on home game days. 10 minutes later it was “well we can wear it for all the games, wait no. yeah lets do all the games.” That defected into wearing it every other day which turned into wearing it to sleep, which then became wearing it out on the town and suddenly I found myself getting a talking to from my boss about how he didn’t care about “soccer” and how it wasn’t OK for me to wear a “jersey” to work. And it really pissed him off when I told him that the reason I was wearing it was my personal superstition that if I never took it off Real Madrid would stop trying to sign Xabi Alonso and that he would want to stay.

I can’t quite remember how the conversation went next, but I bet it sounded like this.

Him: “Who the hell is Chavi Malago?”

me: “Its Xabi Alonso, Xaaaabi Aloooonsooo, and he plays in the middle for Liverpool (points to kit) ya know this team. Premier League, England, football”

Him: “Plays n the middle of what? C’mon take it off, you’re setting a bad example (in my head I say “I’m not a Man U fan) for the rest of the staff”

Me: If Jimmy can wear hipster shirts that have Kanye West’s face 3 feet tall in gold print on a pink background, Kate can wear lime green gel flip flops, and Ryan can sport a lip ring, I can wear this”

Him : “Its not about Jimmy, Kate or Ryan . . . and besides, you look like a popsicle!”

Me : “Watch it!” (raises finger to signal alarm) This is 100% class. I could be the best dressed person at a black tie affair with this.

Him : “Look, Dave, I know you like soccer ( I cringe inside) and all that, but lets put this into perspective. You can’t always look like a little kid.”

me (trying not to get arrested for murder) “Hey Jim, I don’t complain about a lot that happens around here and in fact, I let a lot slide, but this is fine and it doesn’t affect my work.”

Him: “It may not but it’s a distraction for you, but it has become for us. If you don’t wear a collared shirt tomorrow it might be time for me to find another door to walk through at 9am everyday.”

Then he walked away.

Fired?

over a shirt?

really, can this be happening?

Do I even like this job?

Maybe my boss is a closet Man U fan.

Now here I had a choice to make. On one side I had to realize that football is just a game and I needed to be more professional about the dismal way I was presenting my image and managing my career, thus stop wearing the kit top, and on the other a little voice said “you’ll never walk alone.”

Guess which voice I listened to.

The next day I walked into work with a collar made entirely out of construction paper, and my Torres kit and a smile.

I got a standing ovation from the staff, and I haven’t heard anything about it since.

What can I learn from all of this?

Well I’ll tell you one thing, this is the best looking shirt I have ever owned, no matter what anyone says.

Don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise.

  1. Cheers to you dude, that’s awesome. Also nice to see there’s another Red in L.A. but me :-p
Your boss sounds like a real prat.

  2. Collar out of construction paper.. LOL.. awesome..
You should have placed a pic here. Just for fun. :P

  3. That’s funny. :)

But what i would say is that over here UK/Ireland we wouldn’t get away with football shirts in the workplace as they would cause a distraction. (though obviously this is football central)
