If the boot was on the other foot

The high-spending Madrid have added another player to their summer transfers, our right-back Alvaro Arbeloa, a deal which has left many Liverpool fans scratching their heads.

Let’s put the boot on the other foot for a minute. We’re in need of a new right-back and we go in search of the Galacticos’ Spanish international Alvaro Arbeloa. A statement is released saying the reds have completed the deal and have brought the Spaniard to Anfield for a fee of just under £4 million. You’d be laughing, wouldn’t you? Such a small fee for a Spanish international who’s had a number of consistent seasons at one of the worlds top clubs.

It’s been our problem for a number of years, our financial performance in the transfer market has been terrible. Many have put it down to former Chief Executive Rick Parry, who left at the end of the season. I’d have to agree that Parry was a major part of our downfall in the transfer market, but what’s our excuse for selling Arbeloa for such a low fee?

We all know the stories about Alvaro wanting out last season and we all know his contract was nearing its end, but that’s still no reason to be selling such a high-quality player for such a low fee, surely we should have battled it out with the club from the Spanish capital in order to ensure we got a fee which matches the full-backs quality and service to the club which he’s leaving.

What I will say is at least we made a profit on the Madrid bound international. That’s something that the Rafa-hating media will simply forget to point out in their efforts to bow down at the feet of Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson. However, if we continue to adopt this weak transfer policy we will continue to lose out in the transfer market and fall short financially of the big boys in the world backed by multi-billionares.

  1. Excellent post completely agree! Real relent to other clubs (eg Man U and AC) over fees but seem to think Liverpool is a push over. Time to act tougher in the transfer market! As for Alonso, I would love to see him stay but it looks like he wants to go but if Real wont pay the price then we keep him, its that simple, last year was last year, player values fluctuate constantly, its part of the game now a days. Real need to put up or shut up.

  2. i totally argee with the articale an the lad above use are both right real just think they can buy anyone an think can push over use easy at the end of thr day looks like only good thing is xabi looks like staying for nw

  3. I also agree, remembering crouch and others that we let go. We never really sell good players with the price they deserve, why?

We sold Crouch last year in a price much less than what we bought Keane or even we would have for Barry?

I would like to see us stronger in the market.

Do you think it is a move your hands of Alonso, That’s why Arbeloa go for cheap, or was their some agreement in the selling contract back when we even bought him??
