Our worst run in 22 years- a retrospective look

Posted by

Last nights defeat to French side Lyon saw the reds slump to their worst run in 22 years, but let’s have a look what happened the last time we had this poor a run.

The years was 1987, Kenny Dalglish was at the helm at Anfield. The squad was filled with a number of formerly great players, looking slightly past their prime and some young prospects. Having these former greats did the squad more harm than good, possibly the reason for the four losses in a row. However in that summer Kenny Dalglish took action, bringing in John Barnes, Ray Houghton and Peter Beardsley, who broke the English record transfer fee. The board backed King Kenny that season financially and it ensured we stayed on our perch as the greatest club in England.

Now let’s look at today. We have a great starting eleven, full of world class players, that if they stayed fit would undoubtedly challenge for the league title as they did last season. However, when faced with injuries we seriously lack the strength in-depth needed in order to keep challenging at the top of the table and in Europe. Come January the differences between 1987 and 2009 start to appear. Whilst the old board backed the manager with sufficient funds to bring in world-class players our current owners will not. Rafa has been left with minimal transfer budgets over recent years, and that will continue as long as Tom Hicks and George Gillett are still here.

So, even if Rafa does get sacked and someone else is brought in, they’ll only face the same problems. Whilst Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City can spend big any new manager will be left to search the bargain basement for players he can purchase with the low transfer budgets. Manager after manager will come and go with no let up, we’ll slip further and further into obscurity season after season until the Liverpool Football Club we know and love is no more.

It doesn’t matter who the manager is, we won’t progress with our current owners at the top.
