The World Cup Draw

Posted by

The World Cup Draw is being held today and as a Liverpool Supporter I have mixed feelings about the whole thing.

I love the World Cup and although I do care much about non-club football I do follow and watch most of the World Cup games.

In the past World Cups there haven’t been many Liverpool players participating so I just simply enjoyed watching the games and did not worry about injuries or fatigue. This year is different, potentially there are up to 17 LFC players that might feature in the World Cup so  we will probably see one of our Reds winning the ultimate football prize for their country.

It is a blessing and a curse I guess, while I would be happy for any LFC player/s that reach the later rounds of the Cup I will worry about next season. The World Cup Final is on the 11th of July and our preseason games usually start the following week which would mean we might have many of our players returning late to Melwood.

And then there is the “Rising Star” effect;
I remember seeing Fernando Torres play for Spain in the 2006 World Cup and telling myself  “Now that is a player I would like to see playing for Liverpool” and at that time I did not believe it would happen. And then I remember Senegal beating France in 2002 and how Houlier bought El Hajj Diouf and Salif Diao after seeing them perform.

So it is a mixed bag after all.
