Rafa can’t be judged by the standards of Shankly

Posted by

Bill Shankly made Liverpool FC to what it is today. There was nothing and no one to compare him with. He changed the philosophy of the club, he changed everything, succeeded, became a hero and a legend. Every club manager, who came after Shankly, was compared with him and his achievements. That’s logical, there’s always a comparison with the best. But it is much easier to set a course, when there wasn’t much before the big brake trough. But when the benchmark once is fixed, it gets more and more difficult to beat it. It becomes difficult to get better in big steps, the steps forward are smaller. Patience and continuity are the key.

Sometimes you have to take risks and await the results. Just like Rafael Benitez did with signing Fernando Torres or Robbie Keane. The first one turned out to be a great success, one of the most phenomenal signings in the history of Liverpool FC. The other one … well, wasn’t so lucky for both sides. But that’s a part of the job. And Rafa knows that, and he is making the best out of it. He is able to take risks and he knows, that sometimes you make mistakes, but then you just have to make the best out of it. And be patient.

I don’t want to say Robbie was “a mistake”:it just didn’t work at Anfield. Well, that can happen also to the best. Shankly made mistakes too, let’s not forget that, all you judges out there.

Rafa Benitez made a lot for L.F.C.During two years only, after his move from Valencia, he turned the Club into a winning one again, he gave us back the spirit and the hope. Of course, he can’t be compared with Bill Shankly. It wouldn’t be fair because Rafa is working in an overwhelming shadow. Every step Rafa takes, is being compared with Shankly’s decisions and achievements. It isn’t right, after all he did and he still is doing for our Club. I have an enormous respect for Rafel Benitez and his work, ambitions and dedication. To live and work under such a great pressure isn’t even roughly as easy as compare and excoriate somebody.

    1. Neel, we should respect those who try to make an effort to write in English when it is not their native tongue.

I bet you and me would make many spelling and grammar mistakes we try to write in German :-)

      YNWA Amanda,

  2. You don’t want to, but I will. Keane was the second biggest mistake that Rafa has made. The biggest mistake was running off Xabi.
