If Rafa goes, who do we want next?

  1. I’d love to see Hiddink or Mourinho. I can’t see them leaving their current positions for Liverpool though with our current position (both in terms of football and finances).

I wouldn’t mind Klinsmann either. I was impressed with him as Germany’s manager.

  2. are you for real or a manc, rafa loved by all, dont think so, more closer to the truth is despised by most of us Liverpool fans, and if he cared about the club and/or the fans would do the decent think and walk, even souness did that

  3. If Rafa would resign now it would get even worse at it is, because the players would have to adapt to the new manager, his techniques and functioning. I still trust in Rafa. He should stay. We are not ManCity.

  4. In my opinion, the manager’s position should not even be up for discussion.

However, if you were to put a gun to my head, there are only two managers that are up to the job and who would be available (one now, one in the Summer). They are Guus Hiddink and Fabio Capello.

We couldn’t afford to sack Rafa, pay a new man (and any associated compensation if he’s in a job) AND buy players, mind. Be careful what you wish for, boo boys.

  5. Since this is hypothetical question, I would like to suggest that the majestic Ronnie Whelan to step in and fill Rafa’s shoes if he departs.

You know… just so that Madam Karma can prove what a biotch she can really be.

  6. Well if he goes this season and I’m still not convinced that’s the best idea, then Kenny to step in until end of season. Then…well my 3 choices would be:

Capello – If (ha ha – big IF) he wins the WC, then he’ll go. His contract has a break clause in it for post WC. He’d be ideal and is known to admire Anfield & the fans after we blew Roma away in 45 mins that night Houllier returned from his illness.

Guardiola – Yes he’s doing well at Barca, but rumours persist that being a Catalan, the pressure is immense and he’s feeling the strain. Best summarised here: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=716592&cc=5739
Sound familiar? Cast your mind back to a young, talismanic striker at Madrid’s other club. El Nino was a 14-16 goal a season striker and weighed down by the expectation of the fans As soon as he left, that pressure evaporated and he became the player we know and love. I think Pep could be in the same mould and he’d also keep our key Spanish speaking players together (Pepe, Masch, Nando etc).

3rd….hmmm 3rd….He’d have to be something special….hmmmmm…. Yeah I know he’s a bit love or hate and he’s got no experience building academy’s (which we so, SO need) but he too is an admirer of the Kop. Think of all those times we beat his ass during the CL. At full time, he was looking ruefully at the Kop. We DO have a good squad (yeah a few are below par, although we’ve now shipped most of ’em out) but they need an arm around their shoulders and a confidence boost. Who better to do that that Jose? He wants a club to stay and build. He wants to return to the Premier League. Arsenal – no. Chelsea – no. Man Utd? Rumour has it Fergie has vetoed that. So that leaves us. If he gee’d us up from a top 4 side to win in a season (as he did at Chelsea – don’t forget Ranieri already had a decent squad in place) would we complain? Would we hell….

  7. I know alot of people are gonna dive head first into your post but i would like rafa to stay but we have to think what is best for the club and i believe that kenny dalglish and guss hiddink might do a better job than rafabutt then again they couldnt also alot of people keep saying remember what rafa did in 2005 and 2006 but if we keep living on the past we will get nowhere

  8. First of all, ive recently noticed that alot of your posts are taken negatively but i believe that you put up really good points and with that being said there is 2 point i have to say about this topic:
1.You never know if Guss or kenny dalglish will do a better job than rafa is doing
2.Alot of people defending rafa keep saying remember what he did in 2005,living in the past will get us nowhere

  9. Keep the comments coming in friends but hey, let’s stay realistic. This is all theoretical. We know very well that the chances of Rafa leaving are close to zero. The only way for this to happen is for the spaniard to have another opportunity in the waiting (see Juventus) so he would resign and go from one prestigious management to another. Mourinho will only go where the Clubs spend big. Klinsmann no real success story. Guus is a great manager, but not for the long haul! Who else then?

  10. Rafa – get with the team, we finished second last year but have had a shitstorm of injuries… just bad bloody luck FACT

  11. I’ve always if we can no longer have rafa the only replacement I would want would be Mourinho. I also like Martin O’neill because of his wit and the passion he shows but I think Rafa and Mourinho are the better tacticians.

  12. Since this is hypothetical question, I would like to suggest that the majestic Ronnie Whelan steps in and fill Rafa’s shoes if he departs.

You know… just so that Madam Karma can prove what a bi*ch she can really be.

  13. This is not a matter of who’s WANTED to replace Rafa but who COULD be available. Hiddink would be great but only for a relatively short period of time and possibly not available anyway. Mourinho would demand a huge transfer budget and O’Neill appears to be well settled at Villa.

Many other names have been mentioned but not the one who may be the perfect answer.

I refer to Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish who so far shows promise of possibly being another Bill Shankly and maybe Alex Ferguson in the making…and the fact that they are all Scots is pure coincidence

  14. I dont think it’s a case of getting rid of Rafa… more so we need the yancs to leave… they dont know about liverpool and will never understand liverpool. They need to go…They’re not here to invest and make us better, and its only a matter of time before they leave us broke..

It is so frustrating. the fact is alot of our players are injured… and we dont have a squad like chelsea. Their second team is probably better than our first team right now. The loss of Alonso has had a big impact on our squad. Things have changed in the line up which just doesn’t bring it up to how strong we were last year.

Im having a rant…forgive me if im off the point..

All i can say is we need to support our team and our manager and the yancs need to go.

  15. In ten years time hopefully we’ll look back on these debates and think ‘Blimey I can’t believe we were talking about booting out Rafa’.

    I’m behind the manager.

    YNWA

  16. That guy who proposed Pep must be insane.
You are talking about a manager who demands Rooney and Fabregas and expects the club to get them to come to a club where he will need to sell Degen for 20 mil if he wants a player on loan.

  17. I feel Rafa should stay. I know there is no trophy for second but we did get our highest EPL finish in 8 years and our highest points tally since…? You don’t have to look back to ’05 and ’06 to see what Rafa has done.

Could another top manager bring liverpool the success the fans want and deserve with our current limitations? Perhaps, but I doubt it. Mourinho? No. Guus and Capello? Maaayyybe.

The only manager I think could possible improve our standing (other than Rafa) would be Harry Redknapp… I hear he is taken though.

  18. I don’t think that getting rid of Rafa would make things any better, especially when you factor in that any ‘top’ manager isn’t going to want to touch Liverpool with a ten foot pole. There are numerous issues at the club and to think that changing the manager will miraculously make everything better is nonsense.

Rafa is not blameless but neither are the board, the players and Lady Luck.

Kenny Dalglish was fantastic for Liverpool but he’s also been out of management for a decade. There is no guarantee that he has the ability to be a messiah, as too many fans seem to think will be the case.

  19. If Rafa is to leave / be replaced then for me it is simple – Hiddink would be my choice. If he can take South Korea to the semi finals of the World Cup, then he can certainly help turn the fortunes of LFC around. King Kenny was both a fantastic player and manager, but I have to say I do not believe he would be a wise replacement for Rafa – been there done that and is better suited to his current role. Please don’t get me wrong, the man is an LFC legend and will always be regarded as such, but I just don’t see him as the answer or for that matter wanting the job – he has little to gain / prove and a lot to lose.

  20. I think we have to keep rafa, but if he does go then id like to see mourinho or martin o’neill brought in.i dont think alex mcleish would be a good choice for us.

  21. rafa should stay put!!!!it’s the 2 american morrons who should go!!!!!these defeats could be a blessing in disguise that would force the 2 american to sell our beloved club!!!

  22. rafa said he will quit if torres is sold!! so..sell torres for 100 million and save another 20 million of compensation. We have 120 million to spend on new manager and players!!! No!.. I guess not!! money will be used to settle debt.

that’s the reality..so be realistic!! rafa is the best for us at the moment.. so walk on.

  23. Come on, Rafa’s doing WAY better than Souness ever did, how can anyone even start to compare them. Rafa shouldn’t go, but if left no choice, King Kenny please.

  24. This has been Rafa’s only bad season so far, its just been REALLY BAD!! Its a shame. Honestly I doubt anybody can rescue us now really. Best start planning for next season.

  25. Martin O’Niel
    Hiddink
    Rijkard
    Guardiola
    Cappelo

    in that order
but would rather have rafa till the end of the season at least
