Comparison of a Bad Season for Rafa with Fergie’s 01/02 n 04/05

I received this email from Bilal Muambi, he is an LFC Supporter who currently resides in Perth, Australia.

They say Rafa Benitez will keep his job because, just like my missus, it’s too expensive to get rid of him. But does his job deserve to be in jeopardy on the back of one bad season?

Let’s imagine Fergie failed to qualify for the knock-out stage of the Champions League, was eliminated in bleak midwinter in the FA Cup, and watched his side limp home, say, eight points behind the title winners. Would he be under threat then? Those who say ‘yes’ should cast their mind back to the 2004-05 season because that’s precisely what happened.

Nor was that an isolated dreadful season for Manchester United. Three years earlier they’d finished third, behind Liverpool, lost in the fourth round of the FA Cup to Boro, waved goodbye to the League Cup after a 4-0 thrashing by Arsenal, and, best of all, had been dumped out of Europe by Bayer Leverkusen.

Does anyone seriously believe United would have been better off today had they sacked Fergie after those two joke seasons – well, anyone apart from me? No United stuck by him and look what happened – they wasted £16million on Nani, £15million on Hargreaves, £19m on Carrick and, best of all, £32million on Berbatov.
