Maxi’s mind made up by ex-Reds

Posted by

Maxi Rodriguez has said how he was influenced by former Reds Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Luis Garcia when he was making his mind up on whether to come to Liverpool.

On Flo, he said:

He told me some of the names of the great players who have passed through Liverpool over the years

With the connections he had at Anfield with Mascherano, Torres and to a lesser extent Insua, you would have thought that at least one of them could have had a quiet word, but apparently it was those two who spoke on Liverpool’s behalf even though I don’t think either of them are at Atletico anymore.

Now, this might not be of any real relevance, but it just goes to show how clubs like Liverpool leave lasting impressions on players – even players like Luis Garcia and Sinama-Pongolle who took their fair share of stick when they were at Anfield. Obviously those two had memories at Liverpool that Maxi might not have (Champions League win for a start), so they are bound to have good memories of the place, and like Maxi has said:

it’s a great institution and good to be a player on the books here.

Its a sign of how our history can still affect our present and our future. It is not something to beat our current team over the head with, but something for them to aspire to. Hopefully our latest signing will take it all in, and make a bit of history of his own…
