“Liverpool against Everton: so much history, so much pride.” With those words began the yesterdays Merseyside derby at Anfield which ended 1:0 for the homeside thanks to Dirk Kuyt’s goal.
Are there any better words to describe the Merseyside encounters? Well, there aren’t. “So much pride?” Yes, there is.
And since yesterday there is even more of it because I have to add some pride about Dirk’s 50th goal in the red shirt and about the whole team as well. Our lads showed true commitment, especially after Sotirios Kyriakos has been sent off and the Reds had to fight with only 10 men. It was really amazing how there were trying and working so hard. As Rafa said “ …we played with our heads as well as our hearts …”. Well, that’s a fact which was observable.
The 1:0 win almost feels like a Champions League victory, at least for me. And like in many Champions League matches it was Dirk Kuyt who scored the most important goal: the winning one. The Holland international has taken 181 games to reach the milestone since his arrival at Anfield from Feyenoord in August 2006.
“It’s good for him and good for our fans that he can be a hero. Also, 50 goals is an amazing record for a player who plays everywhere”, said Rafa and he’s right, once again.
Dirk’s trademark isn’t only his energy, passion and fully 100% commitment to the team but also his ability to stay calm and score “rescue goals”, out from nothing and, as we often could experience, in the very last minute. In the last few months there were massive critiques on Dirk’s quality and his play. Even in the bad times and even if it’s hard, we shouldn’t forget how important he is for the team and what he already did for us.
