A stylish victory

It was a magical football night at Anfield as Liverpool hosted Portsmouth and secured three points in big style: with a 4:1 victory. On the 118th Club’s birthday, who couldn’t win a Monday clash since 1999, the fans could go back home smiling. A great birthday present that was.

The atmosphere in the stadium was strange. The fans on the stands were uncommon calm and quiet but the action on the pitch was even more curious. In the recent games our play was simply woeful but yesterday … the played like exchanged! There was power, there was confidence, there was passion and, what’s even more important, there was teamwork. In other words: it was a great red performance with electricity and crackling in the air. In Rafa’s words: there was “kwality”.

Do I hyperbolize? I don’t think so. Not after what we’ve seen against Wigan …

From the beginning Liverpool was dominating the game and the 3 goals within 6 minutes definitely was the climax. It was crazy! It was tremendous! It was perfect. It seemed like we were about to score every time we were moving forward! Like in the old days.

Fernando Torres scored the first and the fourth goal in his old well known style: deadly and precise. Or deadly precise? Well, you decide. It was just … Simply Torres that was. Babel scored the second one and we didn’t even had enough time to cheer because the next one was already on his way! It was Alberto Aquilani who gave us another reason to joy with scoring his first goal in the Kop. He made some fantastic assists as well and his whole performance against Pompey was utterly superb. Great, great stuff.

Although Steven Gerrard wasn’t able to score, he did more than enough yesterday. It was our old Stevie G. again and this fact made me smile even wider.

The start of the second half was a bit sloppy but after a few minutes we took the control over again and Pompey didn’t even had time to take a breath! And … well, let’s face the truth. Wasn’t it fantastic to get the Rafa-out-Brigate and all the Mancs shut up? THAT was equal with the victory.

It was simply a magical night and let’s hope that it wasn’t only a one-hit-wonder.

  1. Yes your right it was a great game last night, exactly like last year, still had holes in our defence but then it doesn’t matter as we’ll score a bucket load. Nice to see Torres’s attitude change, and nice to see Stevie working, but still needs work!

Why mention the Mancs? Thats bluenose territory that!

  2. If i’m not mistaken I think our last monday night victory was in 2001 against Everton not in 1999 but i’m not sure as i’m going off of memory here. Good article again Amanda, walk on.

  3. Hmm … I was right. :) Just found it: “Last time LFC won on an actual Monday night was against Bradford City with a 3-1 win back in November 1999.”

Thank you for the feedback! :D
