Vamos a Madrid!

Oh what an exquisite night that was! Benfica’s Europe dream vanished as they got beaten 4:1 in an almost perfect football match at Anfield in an electric game.

I could watch the goals again and again and again … I’m sure I’m not the only one. They’re so lovely, aren’t they! They are even lovelier as we cannot look back on many happy moments in this season.

Dirk’s opening goal was a well needed boost, albeit we’d have to wait with the celebration due to referee’s mistake. Again. Well, this time the official made a real blunder. A corner and off side? A nice one. Shame on you! Anyway, after Torres’complaint the goal was given. That’s something new in the never ending story about the relationship between the referees and LFC.

And then there is Lucas’ brilliant run. Heaven! In the first moment I didn’t even realised it was him, so unexpected it was. And then there was his joy … magnificent. Lu…Lu…Lu…Lucas Leiva!

Torres’ first goal was a prefection. A clinical perfection performed by Yossi, Dirk & Torres. I can’t get enough! However his second goal was our secure ticket to Europe. And a massive relief for the lads, for Rafa and a big one for the fans, as well. And! A Great anger in Manchester which makes this victory even sweeter!

The bag was full with sweets. Lots of, lots of sweets.

There were a few mistakes, though. (There’s always something to moan about, isn’t there?) But I don’t want to complain about them today. Let’s just enjoy the “day after”. The day after a magic football night and a massive, lovely victory.

Because that’s what it was, wasn’t it? Benfica was the better side during about the first 15 minutes of the first half, but then the Reds took the control over. They played concentrated, pushed forward, controlled the game and made us proud. Especially Lucas, Kuyt, Torres, Kyrgiakos and Yossi – we can really call us lucky to have them in our team. And let’s not forget Pepe! Evene if this one ball got trough, our keeper proved that he’s the best in England.

So why was this match so different from the one we’ve seen last week? What changed? I’ll tell you: This was Anfield. The atmosphere in the stadium was utterly electric. I’m getting goosebumps while writing these words. The chanting fans were standing right behind the team and they were outstanding, though. It definitely helped the team to play better and – in the end – to win. Unique supporters. Well, I couldn’t be there in the stadium but if I could … Who wouldn’t? However, I was chanting and cheering and making big noise at home as loud as the fans in the stadium.

So was it the home bonus? Or was it the new kit already bringing us luck? Well, you could say so, if you’re that superstitious … I don’t know and don’t care what it was? We’ve won!

Our next Europe League match’s in two weeks and we’re facing Atletico Madrid. Vamos!

  1. Really a brilliant match! And I couldn’t believe it was Lucas who scored the 2nd goal myself (I broke my glasses jumping up and down :P)

  2. Amanda, we are proud to have you as part of our ‘family’…. hope you get to anfield soon.
    love reading your posts :)

  3. @Indranil. Yeah, I think the most of the viewers thought so. :)

@sonofshanks Thank you so much! Your comment made my day. :) It’s motivating, though. YNWA

  4. I’m one of many who thought it was Torres instead of Lucas too. Not helped by the fact that I was watching the match via Internet stream where the picture quality wasn’t so good
