Transfer requirements and assessment

Amidst all the uncertainty and speculation about Liverpool’s finances, I questioned myself as to what kind of additions do we need in our squad to actually compete with the other top clubs in the league. After all, with the precarious position we are currently in, we’ve to make sure that the money is invested in the right areas. So I made a kind of a personal analysis on what areas we HAVE to strengthen this summer.

I feel we need additions in 4 positions for sure.

1. A striker to compliment Torres, a target-man would be a favourable option.
2. a left winger.
3. a right winger.
4. a left back.

we currently play kuyt, benayoun, riera, babel, maxi, el zhar, on the wings. out of these we might cash in on benayoun, riera, el zhar, and if a good offer comes in, babel. The cash generated should hopefully be with the idea of filling up the above mentioned positions to add to our kitty. Those of our current wide-men not sold should be relegated to the bench as back ups (for good quality additions), probably with the exception of maxi.

Also, the need for a left winger is more as compared to the right, cos I feel that if we play kelly (who has been superb in the time he has played in the 1st team) as a RB and put Johnson as the winger, our right side could actually look quite menacing, with glen having little defensive responsibilities, yet having the acumen to defend the way rafa likes his wingers to. There’s no real need to elaborate on the striker and Left back part, cos they’re positions simply crying for reinforcements and we have to get them. Fact.

In my opinion, we don’t need any more midfielders if Rafa uses plays Gerrard in the middle, thereby dumping the exasperating 4-2-3-1 tactic. A classic 4-4-2 would be a sound n’ effective formation cos both mascherano and gerrard are not the type of CMs that would go forward irresponsibly and GJ if put in as a RM would also do a decent job when defending. Indeed if we do need to play with a lone striker, a 4-1-4-1 makes more sense with the players at our disposal. Keeping our players is also of utmost importance so that our squad doesn’t fall apart. Gerrard, Torres and Aquilani who have been linked to various clubs need to be retained in our squad at ALL costs.

I feel that our squad needs quality in certain positions that were toothless this season, and if managed the right way, can surprise many of the people who feel Liverpool is a spent force on the pitch. Off the pitch, well I need a gun to blow hicks’ n Gillet’s brains off and feed em to the dogs.
