Who will take the helm?

There are at least a dozen names being linked to the Manager’s post at LFC. Some are likely, others are quite improbable, but then there are many issues to take into consideration, the first one being that the Club cannot risk another massive move in the wrong direction.

The most palpable names have been those of Roy Hodgson and a return to management for King Kenny (which is unlikely and perhaps more beneficial for the Club is he keeps this important ambassadorial role which has turned out to be a buffer between the fans and the establishment).

Other names being mentioned are (or were) Guus Hiddink (under contract and expensive), Martin O’Neill (under contract and Lerner tends to keep him happy), Mark Hughes (Man Utd blood at Liverpool?), Sven Goran Ericksson (too flamboyant and never impressed me much), Jurgen Klinssman (not Liverpool material) and the latest being Marcello Lippi (free agent after World Cup) and David Moyes (is someone trying to instigate civil war on Merseyside?). Have I missed anyone, if I have, perhaps it’s because they fall within the improbable category.

If the above represent the essence of what may come Liverpool’s way, then I humbly propose my two preferences which are Roy Hodgson and Marcello Lippi. Roy Hodgson is a solid choice. He is not an expensive option; he tends to keep a low profile, and has always done a decent job with what’s at his disposal. Marcello Lippi is the epitome of Italian tacticians. Coming from the beautiful seaside resort of Viareggio, he might find life slightly harsh on Merseyside, but he might, just might, relish the challenge, not forgetting the fact that he is a free agent once the World Cup is over.

As for the players, everyone is predicting a mass exodus of players from Liverpool, but other than players that were already on the way out, I don’t see any big name leaving, apart from Mascherano of course, who has become Rafa’s golden boy and who would not mind joining the large posse of Argentinean players at Inter (Samuel, Cambiasso, Milito and Zanetti). His wife would not mind that either I suppose.

I just hope we make the right choice, and we make it quickly!

  1. Dalglish is a definate NO-NO for me. He has been out of management for far too long to come back in now-football has evolved since his heyday.Im not keen on MON either, nor am I keen on Hodgson. His failed stint at Blackburn, where he had an excellent budget to work with, worries me. Yes he took Fulham to a Euro Final, yes he did a good rescue act at Inter, and yes he won titles in a weak league-but this is not the man to get this team back into the top 4-even if he had the funds at his disposal. He would do well at bringing some calm to the team initially but I just cannot see the team sweeping all before them under him. Redknapp is interesting, but why would he come here-Spurs have a very good squad, he has so much more tranfer funds, and perhaps more importantly they are in the Champions League.Van Gaal on the other hand has taken Bayern as far as he can(highly unlikely they will reach next years CL final again). He has been successful in so many other leagues and an opportunity in England with a name such as Liverpool could be too hard to turn down. As for Sven, if he even gets so far as to get an interview, then Purslow should get the sack

  2. Cat, he is in the rumour mill too, but like Juande Ramos, I don’t think he is what we need.

  3. I wouldn’t want to lose Lucas… He is much better as an attacking midfielder and he’s still young. Rafa just played him out of position. If rumours are true that Gerrard might leave as well as Masch, then Lucas will have to be kept around.

As for next manager – it seems everyone not in a job and a few that are, are getting tipped. Nobody knows and I suspect we won’t for a bit yet. Personally, I want it to be a British name.

  4. Marcello Lippi is the man for the job. The players need a big name and someone who they think would take the club forward. tactically he is a genius that has won a number of titles, and that would go down well. He is out of contract after the world cup and has said recently he would never manage in serie A again but has said he would welcome a job in the premier league. Look at carlo ancelotti…first season with chelsea he has won the league and cup double…for me Lippi is a better manager who would get the best out of the players. He is the best manager by far who has been linked includung hiddink

  5. Derek. If you were Manager at Bayern Munich who just won the German double and nearly clinched the Champions League, plus have players like Robben and Ribery and a substantial transfer budget would you leave them for Liverpool?????

  6. Im hearing from a source that a deal with a buyer in the Middle East is ‘imminent’,and the primary reason why Rafa was axed to make way for a clean start with the owners using their ‘vast wealth’ on deciding who the new manager will be. Officials are keen to push through the deal withing weeks-and only H&G can screw it up. I thought yeh yeh Ive heard this all before-but then the same thing has been said by another source-from Koptalk.co.uk. who are normally very reliable. Hang in fella’s, there could be excellent new coming our way yet

  7. Tonio mate… quite simply put there is no one to replace Rafa at this time. I’m not being overly dramatic or scaremongering. Just take a look at the list of likely candidates… the probable list, not the fantasy one.

Not one of them compares to Rafa in any shape, form or manner.

On top of this, who is going to do the hiring… Hicks, Gillette, Purslow, Bought-man. Do you honestly think any of them even have the knowledge to find a good manager?
Do you think any good manager would join us in such turmoil?

And as for Kenny, my opinion is that he should steer well clear of it. He can only tarnish his legacy by being involved with these sharks and their hired hit men.

    Ask yourself one simple question…
Why did LFC – a club famous for not sacking managers, even bad ones like Souness – just sack their most successful in manager in over two decades when the majority of the fans wanted him to stay?

And not only did we sack the man, we actually paid him to leave when most of Europe’s top clubs, at one time or another, have offered him a fortune to join them!

The whole thing stinks mate. But I tell you why it was done… Hicks and his gargoyle Gillette have just removed the one final obstacle that stood in there way and they can now do anything they want to the club without any opposition – well, no opposition on the inside and the only one with any real clout.

No matter how disapointed you were with last season, one thing is true… Rafa Benitez fought for us all the way.

No matter what you think of the man, even if you thought it was time for him to go, there’s one thing no one can deny… he was one of us. He got it. Like he said on many occasions, he loved the club, he loved the fans, he loved the city. And he fought for us to prove that.

Myself, I think he is one of the most unfairly maligned men in football. And I fear, no matter what any of us think of him, we are going to live to regret this for a very long time indeed.

    Corinthians…
    Texas Rangers…

We must oust these two evil men and oust them sharpish or we are next on that list of once proud sporting institutions that they have destroyed.

  8. Fat Scouser. We must try not to commit the same mistake we did last year when Xabi left. All Liverpool fans spent months debating who would replace him ecc, ecc. Rafa is gone. He has been a good manager, but we must admit that we have underachieved in the last couple of seasons. I think there was a need for change my friend, and change it will be. Let’s just hope Marc in S.Africa is right and we get the sugar daddy owners we rightfully deserve.

  9. Under achieved last 2 seasons? Time for a change?

Tonio… We were 2 goals away from winning the prem the season before last.
Yes. Just 2 goals would have turned two of them draws into wins and we would have won the league!

Oh well, each to their own and all that, but I’ll just leave you with this…
All it takes for evil to succeed is good men to do nothing.

However, anyone who wants to do something is more than welcome to join us in the struggle. I can always be contacted… FAT SCOUSER on RAWK (redandwhitekop.com)

  10. Guus Hiddink for me. He is expensive but when a new rich investor comes in (hopefully Marc in S. africa) is right, money will be no object. I think Liverpool will not find it hard to find a good manager given our rich history and tradition.

  11. Well said fat scouser! Pretty sums up my feelings toward the manaer situation right now. You want the Liverpool way let’s go to the boot room, you want sugar daddies go to man city! Simples?

I do fear what the summer is to hold for us, i’m just praying Hicks and Gillette can sell the club sooner than later, and hope Kenny doesn’t buckle under the pressure to come back from a certain section of the fans and stays with the club to ensure it’s sold to the right people and the right people are in charge!

  12. Unfortunalty fat scouser I’m a mere voyuer to RAWK as there is no room at the inn!

Couldn’t agree more obviously last season was a bit dissapointing but you have to take the bad with the good, I really hoped Rafa would stay like you said fought for the club and the fans on numerous occasions and will be a legend for me!

Well I hope everyone who wants a better future for the club is getting there hand inthe pocket and also helping SOS out as the acromin means more now than ever!
