Red’s World Cup Daily Round Up 24/06/2010

Another shocking World Cup day! Martin Skrtel’s Slovakia knocked out the defending champions Italy. Daniel Agger is the second Red to leave South Africaafter Denmark lost against Spain, and The Netherlands with Dirk Kuyt finished Group E first as the won against Samuel Eto’s Cameroon.

Let’s start with the shocker of the daywhich was an exciting match, by the way …

Slovakia – Italy 3:2

Martin Skrtel played strong 90 minutes but the Slovakian defence let through two goal … errr … “only”.

Robert Vittek was the hero of the hour, netting a superb brace, as the Fighting Jondas held on to earn the three points and claim a spot in the last 16 on their first ever appearance at the finals.

I think everyone is happy for the team. The team didn’t hide their tears of happiness as the players were celebrating the victory on the pitch ion front of the fans.

Denmark – Japan 1:3

Disappointment for Agger in Rustenburg. The Danes rarely looked like getting back into the contest, although Agger helped give them late hope when he won a penalty which allowed Jon Dahl Tomasson to reduce the arrears on 81 minutes.

But Japan made certain of the three points when substitute Shinji Okazaki netted just moments later.

Would really love to see Denmark in the next round, but that’s how it goes …

Cameroon – Netherlands 1:2

A totally different picture in Cape Town where Dirk Kuyt’s Netherlands knocked out Cameroon. Kuyt figured for 67 minutes in Cape Town and played a key role in Robin Van Persie’s opener, cleverly stepping over Rafael Van Der Vaart’s pass to allow the Arsenal striker to drill home.

Babel again remained an unused substitute for Oranje.

The Netherlands will now play Slovakia on Monday, the 28th of June.
