Hodgson Reveals Failure To Bring Back Hyypia

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has revealed how an attempt to bring back legendary centre half Sami Hyypia from Bayer Leverkuse to the club has failed.

Hodgson said of his efforts; “I’m a bit disappointed that my attempts to bring Sami Hyypia back failed. It only failed because he’s so important to Bayer Leverkusen. We couldn’t get him out of his contract.”

“He’s one I would also put in the Jamie Carragher – Steven Gerrrad mould, Liverpool for life. Unfortunately he was let go at the end of the season before last and we can’t get him back. He’s too valuable to them.”

The Finnish International enjoyed a successful season in the Bundesliga, making 32 appearances for Leverkusen as they finished fourth in the table, picking up 59pts from their 32 games. With 38 goals conceded they had the third best defensive record.

Sami’s career at Liverpool spanned 317 games with 22 goals along the way between 1999-2009. He signed for the club he supported as a boy from Dutch club Willem II for just £2.6m. At 36, left Liverpool last summer after ten years of service at the club when his contract expired, choosing to continue playing as much as possible as opposed to moving into a coaching role.

For now Sami may remain a Leverkusen player but somehow destiny may dictate that there is more to come for him at Anfield in the future.
