Gerrard, Torres, what about Reina?

Posted by

Before going out to buy your new Liverpool shirts with Torres or Gerrard on the back, think about our goalkeeper Pepe Reina. A lot of Liverpool supporters don’t seem to take that much notice of Reina, and I believe he deserves more. When Liverpool were struggling last season, they were 7th place, they were in debt, Torres looked likely to leave, Pepe Reina stood up and said: I’m staying here.

Reina has been a hero many times for Liverpool FC

We are lucky to have a world class goalkeeper as Pepe Reina, and it would be hard finding someone more loyal than our goalkeeper.

Reina is one of the best goal keepers in the world, and to say that he wants to stay, even if Torres leaves, even if we get a new manager, deserves a lot of respect.

The keeper was signed by former manager Rafa Benitez from Villarreal in 2005 at 22 years of age and has won for Liverpool the Champions League in 2005 (As a substitute), the FA Cup 2006 thanks to his brilliant penalty saving, and the Community Shield against Chelsea in 2007. He has proved to be a brilliant goalkeeper, and a master at saving penalty kicks. He won the FA Cup 2006 against West Ham thanks to saving penalties in a shoot out, he helped Liverpool progress to the Champions League final in 2007, after being the hero of a penalty shoot out against Chelsea at Anfield. Reina also helped Spain to progress in the World Cup 2010 after telling team-mate Iker Casillas which way a striker would shoot the penalty, as Pepe had already faced him from the spot when playing Atletico Madrid.

Hopefully Pepe Reina will saty with the Reds for the rest of his career, which will hopefully be a lot more years from now.

  1. Pepe only Joined us in July 2005 after we won the champions league, he wasnt a substitute.

But he is an awesome player :D

  2. Nobody under-estimates the job he does for us! Its just the fact less people buy a goalkeeper shirt. Also think you should check your facts before writing an article, he joined in the summer of 2005 after we had won the champions league and was not our substitute goalkeeper for the final that was scott carson!

  3. Have to pull you up on the fact that Pepe wasn’t part of our squad in Istanbul. He signed that summer. Other than that a great article.

  4. “A lot of Liverpool supporters don’t seem to take that much notice of Reina”

Well that’s just not true, otherwise he wouldn’t have been voted Player of the Season.

Everyone welcomed him committing his future and hoped it would spur Gerrard and Torres on to do the same.

He’s generally been the player people have said we can’t afford to lose, as their would be no benefits. He’s the best keeper in the league, and arguably the best in the world.

The reason people buy Torres and Gerrard shirts over Reina shirts is simple. You can’t get a Reina shirt in Liverpool red.

  5. agreed completely. i doubt there’s another keeper you’d rather have protecting liverpool’s goal other than reina, and he was our best player by far last year. it’s just difficult to print his name i suppose, given that most people don’t buy the goalkeeper kit. it’s a pity though.

oh and reina was actually signed for the 05/06 season, after the champions league winning season of 04/05 so he was not part of the champions league winning side of 05. hopefully he will be part of one in the coming future.

  6. First and foremost if Liverpool fans are still buying official jerseys and merchandises when the cancers are still there at the helm, then we have a big problem on hand. Other than that the article is spot on.

  7. you’re right. in the last season he was our best player. We know wwe always can count on him and therefore we tend to overlook him. Which is a schame …

Pepe’s a great bloke and an awesome keeper. Lucky to have him in the team.

  8. I think the striker is a benfica’s striker, and Reina faced him with Liverpool in 2006 CL campaign

  9. The striker was Benfica’s Oscar Cardozo and Reina had seen two penalties from him in the Europa league last season.

But overall great article Pepe truly is a legend.
