Blocking The S*n from Your Computer

Posted by

Have you ever clicked a link and then suddenly you realise that it was going to the Scum or one of it’s websites?

Here are some tips to prevent you from ever accessing The S*n or any other website that they own. Following the instructions below will not harm your computer. The host file mentioned below overrides any website url for your local computer. So what is recommended that you do is point the Scum urls to your local computer this was your web browser can never find the websites listed below. They own many URLS, if you know of more please leave them in the comments.

The info is for PC users, if there are some advanced Mac users out there who would like to offer advice please leave it in the comments.

If there is someone out there who can code in .NET and wants to create an application to automatically update the host files to block these URLS please email me.

Also if you are a network administrator please block all the URLs from your network and if you own a business ask your network administrator to block them.

  1. For Linux users copy the list in section 2 to the /etc/hosts file and restart networking. On Macs the same file is located at /private/etc/hosts

You will need to use the sudo command from the terminal for both OSen… e.g.

    sudo nano /etc/hosts

enter your password, edit, save, restart (or restart networking if you know how), and The Sun while not technically blocked (it’s actually more like misdirected) won’t infect your computer.

From a stupid geek technical perspective, I have one small issue with this technique. 127.0.0.1 is loopback IP address. It is also called the “localhost” or sometimes “home”. It could be said my doing the above that you are redirecting thesun.co.uk to your “home”, and we sure as hell wouldn’t want that.

My suggestion? Replace 127.0.0.1 with 194.109.209.36 and every time you accidentally click a hidden Sun link you’ll be whisked to contrast.org where you can reread their tragic and powerful History of Hillsborough.
