It is always painful losing but when we lose to Manchester United it always hurts more.

Manchester United had a good start to the game and created many chances in the first half, on the other hand we didn’t have a single shot on target in the entire half. It looked like we were going into the dressing room goalless however a Ryan Giggs corner found Dimitar Berbatov who gave United the lead in the 42nd minute. Just a minute after the goal United had a shout for a penalty when a pass back from Maxi Rodriquez hit Jamie Carragher’s arm. From the replay it did look like it was outside the box and Carra was moving his arm away so credit to Howard Webb for a good call.

The second half started like the first half ended and in the 56th minute the woodwork denied Nani from making it 2-0. The reprieve didn’t last long however because three minutes later Berbatov made it 2-0 with what I must admit was a stunning goal.

In the 61st minute Roy Hodgson subbed Maxi Rodriguez  for David Ngog and it was the move that changed the game. Shortly after Ngog came on Jonny Evans brought Fernando Torres down in box and Steven Gerrard converted the penalty given. Evans was lucky to get off with only a yellow card on what should have been a straight red. The goal gave us energy and in the 69th minute John O’Shea brought Torres down just outside the penalty box. Steven Gerrard scored from the free kick given and tied up the game 2-2. Again we felt cheated that O’Shea only got a yellow and not a red as Torres was through on goal.

It all looked like we were going to get something from the game however Dimitar Berbatov completed his hat-trick in the 84th minute and the game ended 3-2.

The loss now leaves us with 5 points out of 5 games, we are currently in 16th place.

THE GOOD: Good comeback having been 2-0 down and what looked like a disastrous showing turned into a respectable performance.

THE BAD: Our very poor display in the first half.

THE UGLY: We are now only 1 point from the relegation zone.

  1. Anyone who thinks we deserved anything today is totally misguided.

How many shots did we have today! Not good enough im afraid and if we need to get funds in then we’ve got to look at Fernando who clearly doesn’t want to be with us!

  2. Roy hasn’t got a clue. The first half display was a disgrace to the shirt. The lack of pace and movement was criminal. What does he do with them in training? He could do with telling Konchesky that it’s expected to pass to your own team, not the opposition. Still as he’s given Konchesky a 4 year deal, so he might have learnt that when he’s 34. Substitutions? Will someone tell the old codger that subs are meant to improve matters. Ngog and Jovanovic had absolutely no impact whatsoever – Babel was the option!

  3. Way too early to start thinking too negative. Even Utd has drawn 2 of their games. We’ve had Utd, City, Arsenal right off the bat. The others haven’t been challenged. Let’s take this next run of games and win them. Sunderland, Blackpool, Everton, Blackpool, and Bolton. We CAN win all 5 of those.

  4. i think the Evans decision was fair. it was a yellow. as for O’Shea, well, it should’ve been a red. but if you recall, Carra was the last man and was given a yellow for hauling Owen down last season at Anfield, presumably because he didn’t have the ball.

  5. The second half fightback was a credit to the boys but once again the lack of width absolutely killed our ability to get service into Torres, or indeed mount any type of credible attack. It seemed like 80% of our passes were to the side or backwards. You see a player like Nani (momentarily disregarding his pathetic ‘Drogbaesque’ falls to the ground)
and wonder how much Liverpool would improve if they just had a wide player in a similar mold.

I thought Poulsen started poorly, taking far too much time on the ball but he seemed to adjust as the game went on. He’ll probably need a few more games before we really see what he has to offer. I felt that Meireles was probably in a similar situation. You could see the potential in his play but he’s not quite adapted to the speed of the EPL.

Cole never really got going, and I think a large part of that stems from being played out wide. We all know that he’s better behind the striker but unless we bring in a winger, it’s really down to him or Jova to play on the left.

The team will get better as it gels but I can’t shake the feeling that we’ll continue to struggle in an attacking sense.

Oh, and I didn’t think that Evans deserved a red card. O’Shea probably did however.

‘Clearly doesn’t want to be with us’? Don’t buy into Redknapp’s bulls***!

Alan Shearer (who knows a thing or two about being a centre forward) has stuck by Torres, and on MOTD2 showed that Torres isn’t getting enough service and is being left isolated.

In the second half Torres started getting delivery, looked lively, and won us a penalty and a free kick. He’s on his way back to form and when he regains it everyone will see how much he wants to be here.

  7. We cannot keep giving excuses for Nando he is payed a fortune he needs to start paying his way,,,, right now we would get a better return starting with Ngog. Law

  8. Torres was at fault for the goal, no question, but you can’t honestly say that he’s getting the service/support that he needs up front. Most criticism for Torres seems to stems from the fact that he and Gerrard have carried the team in an attacking sense for too long. Even today it took two goals from Gerrard, created by Torres to get us back into the game.

There’s no denying that Torres isn’t at his best but I don’t think any player in the world could come in and do much better in his position. The problem is the team as a whole, not just one player.

  9. How many shots from open play were on target yesterday?

    Shite.

Didn’t deserve to be even close.

Terrible defending – Carra getting beat giving the Bulgarian a free header – Konchesky leaving his post – and possibly should have been red carded.

    Shite.

Defending has been atrocious so far this season. Shocking last week against Birmingham, and same yesterday. All the talk has been about how we can’t create anything up front – but look at how poorly we play at the back, and we’ve got even more fucking problems.

  10. THE GOOD:

    POULSEN’s RECOVERIES // MEIRELES’s PASSING // COLE’s DIAGONALS // ROY’s SWITCH TO 4-4-2 // THE COMEBACK // TORRES PRESSING

    THE BAD:

NOT ONE GOOD CROSS FROM COLE OR MAXI // 4-5-1 ??? –> TORRES ALONE // SLOW COUNTERS // SLOW PASSING // SLOW EVERYTHING // JOVA FOR MEIRELES COST US POSESSION

    THE UGLY:

DEFENSE // BERBATOV ALONE THE WHOLE FXXIN MATCH // CARRAGHER SLOOPY (VERY) AND KEEPS DOIN WORST EVERY BIG GAME // SKRTEL SLOPPY // KONCHESKY DIDN’T ATTACK OR DEFEND–> THE SAME AS VS STEAUA, ¿WHAT THE FXXXCK IS HIS PROBLEM??????

    THE END

  11. All those who are blaming torres are just shitting in their pants. Looking at the service he got even villa or rooney or any other top CF would not have been able to anything. He is playing the best he can, why blame him for the team’s failure just cos he is the biggest star in the team. He wants to be here as much as gerrard does so just cut him some slack.
