Liverpool 1 Blackpool 2 Sunday 3rd October 2010

Well that’s a right mess we are in and no doubt about. 18th in the premier league after 7 games with 6 points to our name, and not much sign of improvement either. I hate to sound negative, but at the rate we are going we are going to be lucky if we finish mid-table!

I just can’t work out what has gone wrong, and who is mostly to blame for our current position: is it Roy Hodgson, or is it the players because even though Roy picks the team, it is still the players, at the end of the day, who go out and play the games and play as a team and go at the opposition and actually want to win the game.

I am half and half about this as I think it is too early to make a rash decision about Hodgson and I am not too sure that a change of manager is a good idea at the present moment in time, as we will then have someone with a different way of playing, and time will be needed for that to gel together, and do we really have the time to go through all of that again?

It might work, but there is a good chance that nothing will change and we would have got rid of a good manager for very little reason. Yes, if we finish the season in the bottom half of the table, or heaven forbid, get relegated then yes, sack him, because then there would be a concrete reason to do so, which I don’t think that there is at the moment.

For some reason we do not seem to be playing as a team, and the players don’t even seem to want to win games, or at least don’t often appear to. I just can’t put my finger on what is going wrong, I really can’t, we have some good players but at the moment these players are not performing and they really need to start doing so pronto, or we are going to finish in a league position that we would normally never consider possible.

Despite this I do have to congratulate Ian Holloway and his players for a well deserved win. He got his tactics absolutely right and Roy Hodgson got it wrong in the first half and they were good for a 2 goal advantage. In the second half we played much better, and played Blackpool off the park, and managed to get a goal back, but they prevailed and defended stoutly, and in the end deserved their victory.

There is now an international break before our next game at Everton and hopefully we will discover whatever the rot is and stamp it out asap.

  1. the premiership is essentially about a combination of power, pace and tactical nout. NOW…. lets take a look at our signings….POULSEN slower than hyppia and weak, Cole lost a yard lacking power and Meireles im not quite sure what he does but he doesn’t do it well. As a team we are far to slow and undisciplined. Johnson, Carra, kuyt and Torres have all lost a yard of pace as well. We are possibly the slowest team in the league and are in for it this season.

  2. Hahahaha I never thought I was going to see us turn into relegation candidates. I came here to post a ‘yanks out now’ or ‘hodgson hasn’t got what it takes’, but really I can only laugh. How pathetic and embarrassing. Make all the excuses you like but we deserve to be in 17th. Awful.

  3. We should never have let Rafa go, okay he did produce a poor season last year but the one previous he had got us ours highest premier league points tally ever, which on some 7 separate season would have been enough to take title. I think Roy does need more time but i’m only willing to give until christmas. Lets face it, Roy has never won anything of any note, and the only “top” team he has taken charge of before us was Inter and he struggled there did he not.

  4. A change of Manager will make a positive difference as long as it’s the RIGHT Manager. It’s like having a super care and not servicing/looking after it. It’s not going to perform to it’s best with oil from 2 years ago and soiled spark plugs.
For me, (I like and respect the guy for what he’s done at Fulham), Roy HAS to go NOW. Before it’s too late. I fear the players aren’t performing because they don’t believe in the Management.
Hypothetically, if Bill Shankly could come back to life (adapt to all of the changes in the Top division), and was Manager of THIS current Liverpool squad, do you believe there’d be improved performances and results? I for one do. The closest we have to “Mr. Liverpool Manager” is Kenny Dalglish. I reckon the (non money orientated) players would play for him.

I think Hodgson’s other problem is that he has a small team mentality. He’s usually been to teams where much wasn’t expected. The Swiss, well that speaks for itself. Maybe expectations were higher at Inter, but for 30 odd years of Management, what has he won? And then he says he’s going to continue doing things the way he’s done them for 30 odd years. What is he likely to win with his ‘battling relegation’ mentality…

    Good luck Liverpool.

  5. We need to sell Torres. I’m sorry, but I’m sick of his glass groin muscles. He is a great player but not worth it right now. Get rid of him, buy a decent striker.

  6. Yeah! Sell Gerrard too. These players are not getting any better and they are high paid footballers. Liverpool need the cash to build for the future ..not instant result. Unless a generous sheik come to the rescue..of course.
