Hodgson :: Turn things around before Christmas, or resign.

It is an understatement to say Liverpool FC is in a terrible state of
affairs at the moment. The only good news is that, finally, the board
issues which have plagued the club for three years have been ironed out
and a promising team of American businessmen has pledged to bring the club
on its feet, up, running and to win major trophies in three years.

After Liverpool so nearly snatched a 19th league title in the 2008/9
season, many argued that the Mighty Reds would do the trick and go that
extra mile the following season. I for one could never see this happen.
The mental damage that season did to many players is something which
cannot be over simplified or ignored. Playing so well, week in, week out,
scoring at will, completing doubles over Chelsea and Man. Utd and tearing
Real Madrid to shreds was only rewarded by a second place finish. The
league is a long and psychologically tiring campaign so winning zilch
after such a tremendous effort would have certainly had a debilitating
effect, even on the big names such as Gerrard and Torres. Add to that the
injury factor and board room struggles and one can identify enough reasons
for a disastrous last season. As a fan, the last twelve months turned out
to be very hard to endure and I was looking forward to a fresh start this
season knowing that the effects of 2008/9 would have subsided.

Having watched dismal England humbled in South Africa, I hoped for better
times ahead at Liverpool. It didn't come as a surprise when Rafa was
politely told to hand in his resignation. I am still an admirer of Rafa,
and was, to a certain extent saddened to see him move to pastures new.
Many argue that failing to lead the team to a 19th title after five or six
years was enough-a-reason for Rafa to be shown the exit. This to me was a
blatant mistake by whoever sanctioned his departure. The boardroom matters
required instant rectification, ambitious custodians needed to be found.
New owners in place and Rafa would have been given another season to turn
things around. This was not to be and Liverpool FC were now fighting on
two fronts; searching for a new owner and new manager. Never an easy feat.

We all know how events unfolded during the last two or three months. Roy
Hodgson was handed the arduous task of bringing back the glory days at
Anfield. Hodgson is a nice man, experienced in the field of football
management. Expectations were high when he took over and, although my
first preference would have been a certain Mr Dalglish, I was confident
Hodgson would be a hit. However, it is becoming crystal clear today that
the job at hand is too much for Hodgson to handle. Liverpool need
authority, ambition and a bit of arrogance, yes. One factor which keeps
haunting many fans is this special long-term friendship with Alex
Ferguson. Such sentiment only serves to frustrate and repel ardent fans.

It would be imprudent not to mention one or two positives. The man must be
applauded for convincing the likes of Stevie G. and El Nino that there is
life after Benitez after all. Acquiring the services of Joe Cole - for
free - was a shrewd move. However, things went astray with the shameful
departure of Mascherano. Out went Aquilani too (still unclear whether the
player pressed for a return to Italy, albeit on loan) and in came Poulsen
and Miereles. What defies explanation is Poulsen's transfer from Juventus
- a club until recently in a similar situation, at least,
on the field of play. In my view this transfer was all about passing the
buck. Poulsen has been average, boring at times and one-dimensional.

This brings me to another worrying factor regarding Hodgson's tenure so
far - the passing game. The players seem to have forgotten how to
accomplish a successful pass. Passing is the way football players
communicate with each other. You don't see players chatting; you see
players pass the ball to one another. So when players give the ball away
(and we've had to endure quite a bit of this lately) - similar to a
breakdown in human communication - then one can comprehend why goals have
been few and far between and why we're conceding in every game. No
coherance and positional discipline leaves much to be desired. The only time
I've watched Liverpool play a decent forty-five minutes was against
Arsenal when down to ten men. Other than that, play has been below par,
lacklustre, frustrating.

Liverpool were once a team renowned for being cheeky, arrogant on the
field of play. Masters at the art of passing, this all stemmed from the
man in charge of football matters. Hodgson must understand that time is
running out. Premiership teams are nowadays harder to beat and qualifying
for the CL cannot be taken for granted. This is not wishful thinking - we
demand that performances drastically improve. We cannot spend another 3
years moulding out a team capable of winning the league cup and then
hoping for a top three finish the season after. Success has to be round
the corner. The fact that kids these days think of Liverpool as a team
which simply doesn't cut it means we're losing out on a generation of
fans. This hurts. The proud Liverpool fan has had enough. We need people
at the helm capable of sowing the seeds of pride, ambition and a winning
mentality. We need someone like Bill Shankly again to takes us all back to
better shores. Had great hopes that this would be Hodgson and right now it
looks as though I've been naive to think on those lines.

  1. X’mas is too late to remedy the problem, it must be the next two games, 2 wins or sack him. We must bring back King Kenny……

  2. And I thought I was being generous by giving him the next 2 games, home to Blackburn & away to Bolton!

If we continue this way, we will be down by Christmas. Replacing Hodgson at that point may be too late.

  3. Roy looks like a bafoon when he makes some of the comments he does and it totally frustrates me when they show a shot of him during the matches. To me he just looks clueless and sounds clueless.

I pray and keep thinking if we just win one game that moves us to the middle of the table. 2 in a row and we move into the top half. Right now the rest of the league is helping us out by being mediocre so if we can just buy a couple I think some confidence might flow to the brains.

Things will get better. We all hope sooner and later

  4. Christmas? I’d say Roy needs to wake up, state what he’s going to change and show everyone that it will work in the next two games. We need two wins. If he can’t get that, he should resign.

  5. Christmas is indeed too late. We have some 30 matches to go but Roy should have at most two. We’ve kicked the two impostors so the coach can easily be next. What irks me most is just how much of a laughing stock proud LFC have become!

Case in point is our 0-2 against Neverton, a distinctly average side. Nothing in the least special about their performance but our display was beyond mediocre! Even the Toffs couldn’t believe they were beating us, as we fans too! Is that the new look Red Machine?

    Two games or bust.

  6. Eight games is already too much to gauge the standard of the Manager. Hodgson is clueless and his body language during games is really poor. The man takes too long to make decisions especially substitutions. Yesterday it took him nearly twenty minutes before he brought on N’gog after going two goals down.
He is too scared to make changes and yesterday only made the change after what it seemed like Samie Lee was advising him to do so. Otherwise Grandpa would have brought N’gog in in the 88th minute just like he brought Maxi in the Blackpool game.
If a player is not performing in the first forty five minutes, he deserves an early shower as simple as that. No point allowing him to play another twenty minutes as he is not going to help the team. Yesterday Cole and Maxi were poor for long periods of the game but Roy could not see the weakness. When Roy brought on Ng
N’gog, Babel and Jovanovic the team was transformed immediately. The team put in more pressure and almost scored a goal or two. This is what the team needs, let the opponents worry about you not the other way. Liverpool simple has to play all the players who as more pace and skill.

  7. a game too far already, hes out of idea and lacks vision and passion for the game, askin sammy lee what should i do next, poor sammy lee victim of circumstance gotta go, a full revamp with someone with a pair to stand up to the overpaid egos at the club, and just to add one Torres was a class act and will stay a was till he takes his head outta the clouds and proves he is no has been. Sorry fed up of the ill stay a season and see, pull your weight guys and let us see some football the liverpool way!!!!!

  8. Christmas? From our terrible tactic and form, I don’t think we could pass Napoli in Europa League. In fact, I don’t think Roy will have that much time till Christmas.

Whenever Roy starts the game offensively and let the squad head for goals, I can make up my mind to wait till Christmas then.

  9. Evening ppl.

We are all frustrated, angry watching crap football by, supposedly, world class players. I did concede in my article that Hodgson is probably not up to it – at all – but let us all remember that he was chosen for the job so common sense dictates that he needs to be given time to impose his football agenda. I’m sure that he knows that his job is on the line and that the new owners will not accept cheap defeats.

One thing ‘s for certain: some players are under-achieving badly: Lucas, Maxi, Poulsen, Babel come to mind. Then again, it’s up to the manager to instill drive and motivation and discipline. Right now these are all lacking.

  10. reason for poor games. we are being BULLIED all over the pitch , reference the yak for the shite in the derby this has happened in every game . torres needs a bully to play alongside him . man city have 3 bullies in midfield de jong barry toure . why does arsene wenger always complain about allardyce bruce moyes coyle pulis . because these teams are all full of BULLIES. that is why we will always struggle in premier league , because we dont have any hard men in the team . we have to sign more powerful players like chelsea have i.e. tallest and heaviest team in the prem . also have to go 4-3-3.

  12. Great man management skills from Woy. Tell the world that our star player is lacking confidence. Why not say that Gerrard is worried about his hair so doesn´t want o head the ball. This just allows other teams to make a mockery of our best players
Maybe it is bacause Torres doesn´t rate the manager and know with him he won´t win a thing.

I have always supported LFC managers, even Souness, but I can´t stomach seeing any manager praisng Ferguson and saying we played well when we were shit.

The thing about Rafa whether you liked him or not, he fought for the club and when we played teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Milan and anyone else we always knew we could turn them over.
Now we are worried about Blackburn and Bolton. F**K!!!

  13. even if he wins the next game,he must go,he is too negative for liverpool, too small for the team.he must go.all of u who are saying xmas, are not genuwine pool fans.if u want wats good for us fire roy now
