EUROPA LEAGUE : Napoli vs Liverpool (Thursday)

Posted by

After our defeat at Everton we now travel to the south of Italy to face Napoli in the Europa League.

Napoli are best remembered for being the club that Diego Maradona left his impression on, the people of Naples still worship him together with their patron saint “San Gennaro” and Margherita Pizza. The Italian outfit are currently sitting in 4th place in the Serie A table after seven games.

Here is a stadium guide to Napoli

Roy does have injuries to deal with as Glen Johnson and Dirk Kuyt are still injured while Daniel Agger is sick. The gaffer will also be without Steven Gerrard, Raul Meireles, Lucas Leiva and Fernando Torres who stayed at Liverpool to be “rested”. This really doesn’t leave Hodgson many options but to play some of the young players. My bet is that Spearing, Kelly and Ngog will all start, I also expect Aurelio to return to the left back position as he is fully fit now.

Predicted Lineup:
Pepe Reina, Martin Kelly, Jaime Carragher, Sotiris Kyrgiakos, Fabio Aurelio, Jay Spearing, Christian Poulsen, Milan Jovanovic, Ryan Babel, Joe Cole, David Ngog

Kick off is at 6PM BST

  1. Roy’s about to wipe out all our hope for a single trophy. I’d love to see the youngsters play but not at this moment of time.

Only one good thing I can image from this lose, it could lead to the end of his spell here. His big effort is appreciated but lying 19th of the table is not acceptable.

  2. He has put himself and the team in this position. He’s now so scared to risk the ‘big’ players like Gerrard, Torres, even Mereiles because of the ‘must win’ match vs Blackburn on Sunday. Napoli are 4th in Serie A and he’s not showing them much respect. He probably thinks the team he’s bringing to Italy is good enough to get a draw and then we can thrash them when they come to Anfield the following week. That would have been the case before but not now. I hope (for LFC’s sake) I’m wrong but with the way he’s got the team performing since the start of the season it doesn’t look likely.

But like KC said, maybe one good thing to come out from all this is Hodgson leaving. Didn’t Rykard just leaving Galatassary this week?

  3. Yikes… This would be a great time for a few of the under-achievers to step up (glances at Babel, Cole, Poulsen)

  4. If Poulson play’s were goosed. We need to get a cardboard cutout of Carraghers head and superglue it on the back of the head of whoever plays up front, Carra’s the only player Poulson will pass to.

  5. Great move Roy. Rest the best players when this will be the only trophy we have a chance at. Another nail in this seasons coffin
Why don´t you ask Man U to come looking for Torres by telling the world he lacks confidence at Liverpool. Oh sorry you´ve already done that. What next? Wht don´t you Just hand over the Anfield trophy room to your best mate Fergie while you at it.
What hope have we got with this ol´-timer? Time to be put out to pasture you had your best last day with Fulham.
