Roy Hodgson Needs to Learn the Liverpool Definition of ‘Famous’

Posted by

So we won today. That was great. Not seeing Liverpool in the bottom three is even more great. And it’s pretty awesome how three points can send you flying up the table. Have any of you taken a look? We’re in 11th place on 12 points and just three points behind Tottenham, who currently occupy fifth place. We’re only five back of City in their much-coveted fourth spot.

It was a good win. But Roy Hodgson described this win in a way that I can’t quite see right now.

“Today was a famous victory because we hadn’t won more than once away in the whole of 2010,” Hodgson said after the game. “When you’re down the bottom, and keep being reminded you’re down the bottom, anxiety kicks in.”

Famous.

That word stood out to me. It should to you, too, if you follow Liverpool.

By our standards, a famous win is Olympiakos at Anfield in 2005 and Andy Gray’s famous call. A famous win is Chelsea in two legs that same year. A famous win is Istanbul.

A famous win to me is one which you can say a word or two and you go right back to that game. Whenever I hear the word ‘beauty,’ Steve Gerrard has just sent one flying past the Olympiakos keeper and we’re through the group stages (thanks a lot, Andy Gray). Whenever I see John Terry, I go back to seeing him in tears as the Kop went crazy and Jose Mourinho had his loser face on, one we didn’t see too much of in those days. Mention Turkey, Istanbul or anything that sounds close to it and Gerrard has just put the first goal in and he’s waving like a madman at the crowd.

Those games are famous because they’re on the grand stage and the team fought against steep odds. There are plenty of famous games that haven’t been on the biggest occasions. Remember Torres’ first goal against Chelsea when we got to see just how good he was going to be? Every time I hear news about the much-maligned Tal Ben-Haim, I remember that game.

There was nothing famous in today’s game. Nothing really stood out. It was win number three in a season that hasn’t started out very well.

Don’t get me wrong, I was thrilled with the win. I was probably more thrilled about a 1-0 win against Bolton than I ever thought I could be.

Maybe that’s the problem that I have with Roy: his statement about the game make it sound like he’s lost perspective of where the club should be because of where we are right now. Liverpool are a major club and we’re not supposed to have a ‘famous victory’ over Bolton in October.

I can understand if Roy is trying to get through to the team that they’re doing well. I imagine that the squad is hearing enough about how they need to do better and that can destroy a team’s confidence. There are other ways to get that across. Maybe he’s trying to make sure that everyone on the team knows that he’s not like Rafa and he’ll handle these kind of wins differently than the former boss might have.

Still, it’s a 1-0 win at Bolton. It’s not famous.

I’m trying to keep my patience with Roy, but this is just another item on a long list of things that has worried me about Liverpool’s boss.

  1. Hodgson out now, rather than wait to the end of season.
Even we finish at the 5th or 6th, it still unacceptable for liverpool fan.

  2. You’re right. This is hardly Famous. By Liverpool standard, we are expected to beat the likes of Bolton and Blackburn……. We are suppose to be challenging Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal for the EPL title, not to mention to win the Champions League. Wake up Mr Hodgson, you are now managing Liverpool not Fulham. I hope Mr Henry discuss the departure of ROy when they meet this week!

  3. absolutely right mate. his press conferences are doubting. he looks like a lost and confused man with his own team every time he speaks .

  4. Inspite of the win, I stil feel that Roy isnt the right man for LFC. Cant wait for chelsea up next. Lets not stop believing REDS!

  5. Jeez! Get a grip mate. So he said the ‘famous’ word, so what? It’s hardly a reason to make a story and have a pop at the manager. Haven’t you got anything better to do?

  6. “Haven’t you got anything better to do?”

Yes, I am sure he has, but like I feel exactly the same. It smacks of the same “we played a great game” against Everton.

He isn’t merely talking about the use of “famous” he is using it to refer to all of the nonsense this man speaks every time theres a mic infront of him.

Get him the hell out, and let’s have a manager that knows what “famous game” really means.

    Peace

  7. Daves right. We should stop making up issues like “FAMOUS”. I to think Hodgson is not the man for the Liverpool job, but lets be more adult and educated in any criticism. Analyse his formations/tactics but not the use of an inappropriate word.
We are starting to sound like a bunch of idiots not the best supporters arround

  8. this Roy is just playing a media game so that he can still remain at the helm of liverpool boos…. the team played badly he said and i Quote “He said: “I said to Paul Konchesky that we haven’t won very often away from home. In fact, the last time we did was at Bolton. Now from this point of view i think now he is trying to turn liverpool to Fulham… because Liverpool have been wining away from home.. but now he talks to konchesy cos they are both from the Fulham grade instead of speaking to Gerrad…This man have to leave in the nxt 45min of a full match or else …… i keep my finger cross

  9. You can give people chances in life however it pains me to say this. Hodgson youre a nice bloke however Your time is gone. He refuses to shield his players e.g. torres, reina. (it is so obvious you would have to be dumb not to notice) His man to man tactics has changed the team. i.e you have european players who have played zonal all their lives and switch them to man to man and it will take them more than half a season to adjust.
He sticks up for Fergie! (nope that should ‘nt happen)
His buys true he didnt have much $ however C. Poulson the worst player in Italy for 2 yrs.
Some people dint like how Rafa had the team set out or playing Stevei G out of position or said he spent the most (rem you have to take into inflation and also what he sold to get a true picture). However he always deflected blaim if his players were doing poo! Didnt care about friendships with other managers and true he was a bit stubborn however look at him now hes at inter milan and they are doing ok?
So as owner of liverpoool FC would you be willing to give roughly £30million to someone who is scared of spending that on top quality players ( who has to rely on king kenny to find younger talent) and also highly possible of seeing Torress & reina going in Jan if not summer? What might be good if you read this MR J Henry. Make Jamie jamie carragher next player manager!!!!! ( It would be a shrewd cost effective timely deceision) and have king kenny as his mentor!!!

  10. He was only saying it sarcastically, why would he say its a famous win when it clearly isn’t. Just get off Roy’s back ffs!

  11. I’m not concerned over his use of the H word. I’m more concerned over his running of the club. His tactics leave a lot to be desired, his transfers even more so. His press conference would be funny if they weren’t so bad. And his constant referral to “I’ve got a contract, they’ll have to sack me if they don’t want me” leaves me wanting the club to do exactly that! He’s not good enough, and the club should get rid before we give him any money to waste on the likes of Poulsen and Konkesky.

  12. silly and stupid article i’d say.. give the man till january and if nothing happens after the new players he’s hoping to bring in, then he must leave. as for now, he’s still the manager and you must all respect that as you all respected Rafa!
and all of you should get over Rafa and stop the lamentation, he’s gone and y’all stop acting like labor workers that haven’t yet been paid!
and the authur of this shite article, we’re still on 12th spot on the table, not 11th! go check it well fella!

  13. As I’ve posted before, Hodgson is not a Liverpool Manager, the fact that he is Liverpool Manager, is a legacy of Gillett and Hicks, and a poor decision by Purslow and Broughton. The sooner he is replaced, the better. The results the team ground out against Blackburn and Bolton are as a result of the team finally getting their act together rather than any tactical genius. In fact there were times yesterday when we could have seriously done with a change in formation or tactics but Hodgson and Lee are far too one dimensional.

His performances in press conferences are poor. However, if, and I am not sure he would, but if he went into the dressing room and used that terminology then I wouldn’t have a problem with it. We need to get the momentum going, get the players heads up and a bit of inspiration / exaggeration wouldn’t go amiss. The problem is, I don’t think the guy is that clever – he appears severely lacking in motivational qualities and I just can’t see it – I mean would you go to war for Roy Hodgson? In which case – taking it at face value – he’s just a tw*t desperately searching for respect from the London based media who he is trying to impress.

He won’t be with us long term. I am convinced that NESV are going to replace him with a hot young manager who can be around for a generation – a Shankly type figure that will rebuild. Could Rafa have been that man…?

  14. Here in Nigeria its hurting that even arsenal, chelski, manure fans are urging Mr Henry to show him the door before he sends us parking in the epl. Why should a famous team play ‘unpopular’ team you tell us it was a famous win, after narrow escape cos of the way we played.

  15. Lets start an article on under the headline “Hodgson wear Brown shoes not good enough for Liverpool”
It becoming unbleavable, Roy Hodgson is now wearing brown shoes, has anybody ytold him this is not the Liverpool way. Any informed fan will tell you ALL Liverpool managers have worn Black. Has the man no respect for Liverpool tradirion. Time for him to go. John Henry will no doubt have done his homework and discovered the tradition of wearing black shoes.
It will be interesting to see what his approach to Hodgson is. I would personally give hime until Christmas to change to Black shoes then terminate his contract then.

  16. Actually id been a supporter of Roy Hodgson, but after reading your article I now feel he should definitely be replaced for his inappropriate use of the word ‘famous’. Thank you for creating this incisive piece of journalism and pointing out that, by using the word ‘famous’, Roy has added to your long list of things we LFC supporters should be worried about.

  17. Liverpool “fans” are now actively looking for reasons to complain about the manager, in spite of results. This blog is a cesspool and the comments are worse. Not following you guys any more, sorry.

  18. Also you all don’t know what he meant by “famous” or you aren’t trying to. If you’re going to complain about his language maybe you should learn how to speak it first.

  19. Come on lads, you’re all being a bit sensitive here. Don’t get me wrong, Roy wouldn’t have been my first pick, and i still have my doubts, but he IS the Liverpool manager and while he reamins in post we have got to get behind the man. It like we are looking for the next person to blame for not winning the league… Rafa, Gillett and Hicks and now Hodgson… Come on we’re better than this, support the manager and the players and we’ll improve! Give the man until the transfer window and see where we go from there. YNWA

  20. He should have used the frase “Relativly Famous victory, but not as famaous as Istanbul etc.” then we could all sleep well tonight. I for one will now not sleep well at all following this expose of the missuse of the word famous. God help us why are we worrying about who will be signed in January when we should be putting all our energies into stopping the missuse of thw word “FAMOUS”.
Get a life man. Grow up and concentrate on what important.

  21. I intended to strike up some conversation. I’m a writer, God save me for paying attention to what people say. I don’t just throw words around, especially words with weight like famous. I want to try to see what Roy is thinking by what he’s saying.

This is the second odd thing that I’ve heard Roy say. How about when he said that if Liverpool’s new owners gave him the axe, it would be a “sad day” for the club? I think Roy is conflicted because he knows he’s taken on a job that is too big for him but part of him thinks he can handle the club.

I also chose to write about this because the internet is full of articles about tactics. I could be the 80th article on why we should run a 4-4-2 or I could go for something different. Anything on who we’re going to sign in January is speculation at this point and ultimately fruitless. I do have a crazy idea on how to make that somewhat relevant, though. Keep an eye out for my next post later today.

  22. I am not a Hodgson fan and would feel better if he was replaced, but lets concentrate on the things that matter regarding his poor management skills. His bizar formations (playing the best players out of possition), his poor tactics (playing too deep defensively with no pressing the opposition). His failure to command the confidence of the fans in being able to spend any transfer kitty wisely). But lets be adult and stay away from childish comments on his missplaced comments.

  23. get that manager out , he does not know the liverpool way of playing football.a win is a win and thats 3 points, but we did not play anyway close to the way we played under Rafa Benitez.he may be gone ,but will never be forgotten unless we get a better manager who can better the achievement of Rafa, and thats difficult.

  24. As milan t lost the plot make Carra player manager the reason roy wont drop him is because of fans like you carra number 1 to 11 my arse.
