No manager is bigger than the players – No player is bigger than the manager?

I said after the Chelsea game that the real test to see if we had turned a corner would be in the next two games against Stoke and Wigan. Both these games were noted as must win games if we were to prove we were making strides. Therefore, 1 point from a possible 6, paints a truly horrifying picture. Especially when the 1 point we managed to gain was itself undeserved.

If you would rather not have your dose of realism today, I’d advise you to read no further because it is about to get worse.

We have played Stoke, Wigan, Everton, Blackpool, Sunderland & Birmingham and gained only 3 points. In previous seasons, these games were seen as difficult yes, but winnable. This season we have approached these games with an attitude whereby we believe winning would be ‘utopia’!

We are now thirteen games into the season and we have a goal difference of -4. Not only did we start the season conceding too many, we’ve managed to consistently score very few. In fact we are averaging a goal per game – a truly ridiculous goal per game ratio considering we have one of the best strikers in the world in our forward line.

An increasing list of players are becoming disenchanted or have already become disenchanted with life under Hodgson citing reasons such as his old fashioned methods and poor man management skills.

Before his injury Daniel Agger was frozen out of the squad for seemingly not adapting to the English way of defending.

Glen Johnson was as recently as Friday, lambasted in public by Roy for not performing to his abilities. A newspaper report today printed an article claiming Glen Johnson is now seeking a move away from Liverpool.

Pepe Reina had to come out and quash persistent rumours claiming he is disillusioned with Roy’s training methods and tactics and is wanting out in January.

Of course we have the Newspaper reports linking Fernando Torres with a move away from Liverpool every time we fail to perform.

Alberto Aquilani was loaned out to Juventus where he is now thriving and has been rewarded with a call back into the National Team.

Insua, a technically gifted, young defender was loaned out to Galatasaray this Summer and as a replacement we brought in Paul Konchesky – a more robust, less technically gifted English style defender.

At the same time, with every game that has gone by our style of football has deteriorated more and more. We gained three points against Chelsea, not because we outplayed them but because we held onto our lead through grit and graft. So far this season we have only outplayed a Blackburn team deprived of their first choice centre backs. Our stats for possession in our games recently have been abysmal; we have barely reached 50%. Against Stoke yesterday, well known as a long ball team themselves – we had only 36% possession.

To clarify, I can not prove to you for sure that the reports linking these players with moves away are all true. Or that the players who are allegedly feeling alienated, really are being frozen out by Roy Hodgson. What I can say to you is that it is common knowledge amongst those closely related to LFC, that there is an ever growing list of players not happy with the direction the club is moving in.

Do you see the correlation between the deterioration of our style of play and the alienation and disenchantment of certain players?

The tactics being used by Roy Hodgson have not only served to label us as a team that plays anti-football, but have also made a lot of our players allegedly consider their future.

Liverpool FC are not a mid table side. Or at least we never used to be. At Anfield we are not accustomed to sitting back and watching teams attacking us whilst we wait for opportunities to counter attack. When we are at home, we expect the manager to prepare us tactically to take the game to the visiting opposition. We want to see sustained periods of possession and more than two passes being stringed together in our midfield.

It is obvious. When we invite teams to attack us our players become edgy and fans become jittery and it doesn’t create the best of atmospheres. That is when mistakes happen and we concede cheap goals.

All our attack minded players are being asked to compress their natural instincts and play this long ball game that is getting us nowhere fast.

Pepe Reina is being asked to hoof the ball upfield to Fernando Torres instead of moving the ball forwards from the back. He is not accustomed to this system and clearly it is not paying dividends. He was receiving plaudits last season and the season before for the number of assists he was making – this season he does not look happy.

Glen Johnson who is 1st choice in Capello’s England set up has not been good enough this season according to Roy Hodgson. Roy was insinuating that it is Glen’s poor attitude that is letting him down in his press conference – a common complaint made against Glen. But in this case I think Roy needs to assess if it is not Glen’s attitude but Roy’s tactics that are stifling England’s 1st choice right back. Glen’s attacking instinct is a key component of his game and by demanding he curtails this instinct Roy has left himself with the shell of the player Glen Johnson actually is.

Fernando Torres is bing deployed as a lone striker in a team that defends too deep. A tactic that is pushing him further backward to get a touch of the ball. When we do get the ball, our first instinct is to hoof it upfield to Fernando Torres. But Fernando Torres is not Bobby Zamora, he struggles every game to latch onto hopeful balls being skied upfield that in reality have no hope of reaching him. If Roy is adamant that this is the tactics he wants to play, he needs a target man to hold the ball for Torres. Until this happens, hoofing the ball upfield will be fruitless.

Fernando Torres scored a brace against Chelsea because in the build up to both those goals the ball was played on the decks not up in the air. Clearly that should be evidence enough to revert back to pass and move? Fernando Torres + ball = goal!

Finally, a dressing room that has banter and happiness creates a team that is full of confidence and good spirit. But what we have at LFC is a team of disenchanted disillusioned players with very little confidence. With every defeat and poor performance the atmosphere is only going to get worse. Roy Hodgson is running out of time now and it seems it is very quickly coming to a point where the decision needs to be made to back the manager or the players.

Effectively, by the end of this season we could be a team without Reina, Torres, Johnson, Agger, Aquilani, Pacheco and who knows how many more. Or we could hold onto all these players ….. and part ways with Roy.

  1. Well said and very accurate indeed Zahra!! I agree with you 100%! You’ve said all that I’ve been feeling.

I absolutely vote for Hodgson to go. I’d rather see 1 man go then 4 or 5 world class players leave Liverpool Football Club.

John Henry, please! If you’re listening to the fans…. Do something now! Don’t wait till January… Tell Roy he’s had time to adjust to the team and obviously his tactics, his management ISN’T working for LFC.. Give him his compensation and get Kenny Dalglish in. If not for the long term but at least for now. Please have Dalglish manage he team for their next league match vs West Ham.. Things need to happen NOW!

  2. i can’t imagine even with hodgson fielding a strong team he cant seem to motivate them to a win. Just looking at the last 13 games am just blown away with them games we’ve lost & drawn. i dont understand how we’ve lost to the likes of stoke & blackpool and drawn with sunderland, birmingham & wigan. To quote Paul Tomkins ” right man wrong club’ hodgson has reduced to playing like a mid level team.

  3. A very good article but accepted ONLY by the fans.

We the fans read the game and are by far more knowledgable that the present management.

Give us all a break and get to the roots…START OFF by recruiting an already established Manager YNWA

  4. Roys a nightmare.I cannot believe we haven’t removed him by now.last year was a nightmare and this year its even worse.didn’t agree with Roys appointment originally and I’m pulling my hair out now desperate for something to be done now not later.surely the players we have should be winning against all the teams we’ve dropped points to.Roy and his negative non Liverpool way must go now.how come he’s still there?surely the board must see it isn’t working,he said himself judge after 10 games, well they have been and gone and he’s found wanting.we have a backbone of quality of we play the right people in the right places and attack.I haven’t watched match of the day for over a year.please please get rid.

  5. I’m sure Roy will go but the question is when?
    We have 3 possibilities here:
    1. Now
    2. Arround Xmas time
    3. May 2011

Lets look at these 3 scenarios.

Worst one would be no3. Roy leaves in May 2011. Henry waits until May 2011 to see which top class managers are available.
This can be the best or the worst scenario. We get a top class manager but we are not even in the Europa League.

Scenario no1. Roy leaves now. We keep Lee and Kenny Dalglish comes in. It sounds very romantic :-) but why the romance when what we need is someone to get the job and win atleast 10 trophies within the next 5 years. Isn’t that what we all want? Including Henry?

That brings us to scenario no2. Latest by Xmas a new manager comes in and he takes control. Who stays, who leaves, who comes in now, who comes in next summer. Use the next 6 months to build a new team and bring in another 2-3 big names in the summer. The question is… anyone from the world top10 football managers list available now? The answer is yes.

I would go for scenario no2 and give Roy time to rest during Xmas time (HAVE YOU SEEN HIS EYES LATELY?)

  6. Some, but not all the people who are asking for Hodgsons head need to be consistent. Even after the Chelsea win I still wanted Roy out but some fans under the banner of “Liverpool do not sack their manager after so few games”, were happy to stick with him. Its this kind of dithering that can only allow a slow and painful death. I want him out even if he wins the next 5 games. Logic dictates that a manager that is so inept and lacking a winning mentality cannot possibly in the long run do well in the higher echelons of world football. Roy needs to go. Full stop.

  7. Roy will be gone by Christmas. its simply not good enough for us. but that’s not why I’m leaving a comment. in fairness I agree with you on everything except glen johnson. under rafa he started of well and then deteriorated. the number of balls he let go behind him was unreal. you can’t blame Roy for this guys form. I demand you get out any match from last year and watch the number of balls he let’s in behind him. if it wasn’t for cara he would have been screwed. you mentioned his attacking flags being killed….dude the man has to get his defensive duties right first. there is no point of being at fault for a goal and then running like a mad man for 80 mins to get an assist, just to make up. look at ashley cole, he is an incredible defender and its a bonus he is very attacking AT THE RIGHT TIMES DURING GAMES, but you won’t see cole unless he sees an opening, Glenn does it in the following times.

steven g and co are in the corner, all know how to cross…..glen will go beyond them looking for the ball, why do this, why not support them …your not a midfielder…yet.

pool win the ball back and want to move forward, glen will try to beat two players on the wing instead of passing to at least two open players…is that his ego talking their…it sounds like he has a big one.

its not all about being on the wing, some times its OK GLEN to move inside and head a ball down across midfield , if your player has gone too, after all as a defender with your height this should be easy….never seen him do this.

I want to see glen either moved to midfield or sent packing because someone like Martin Kelly at his young age is showing how to do the job…and Kelly doesn’t even like playing there hes a center half!!!

anyway I’d say by Jan18 king kenny will be in the hot seat……can’t bloody wait…

  8. Absolutely agree with the article. Roy hasn’t done wonders. He doesn’t need to. But what he has actually done is make the club worst than before. All the talk about previous owners and no stability and all the uncertainty affecting the players were in my humble opinion – Bullocks! Roy simply can’t motivate this team and it is telling. Do we need to play a Chelsea every week to play with Heart? It’s amazing how much time Hogson has had. he said judge him after 10 games. And now is number 13. I would give him till 15, but I don’t forsee a significant improvement. Look at all our wins this season! Barely scrapped through every single one of them!

I wouldn’t mind Pelligrini to take over. And oh, I would rather Hogson does nothing in January, then waste our money and make things worst. I rather we don’t get relegated this season and get a new manager in for Next. Can’t wait for the season to be over. It’s really painful to watch Hogson and his tactics, he can use his tactics at Fulham or maybe even Bolton, but not here at Liverpool!!!

  9. Roy has to go,but remember this, for the last couple of seasons Torres “LEGEND” was having to defend at corners because of RAFA’s zonal marking,he shouldn’t have to do that this season and he’s still a lone striker. a lot of teams play lone striker and seem to cope,we have played with 3 or 4 strikers on pitch and still struggled,so where does the blame start
