Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler, affectionately known as God, will leave the shores of Australia in mid-February and return to the UK to take a coaching role at the MK Dons.
The 35-year-old will see out his remaining playing time for Australian side Perth Glory and then link up with MK Dons manager Karl Robinson, who knows Fowler from his time as an Anfield Academy coach. Fowler struck 183 times in the red shirt of Liverpool across two spells for the club, amassing 369 appearances in total, fans waved goodbye to one of their favourite sons as he Gerard Houllier sold him to Leeds Utd for £12.75m mark in November 2001. It wasn’t to be the last time that the player graced Anfield though as Rafa Benitez made the surprise move in January 2006 to bring an elated Fowler back home on a free transfer from Manchester City.
Fowler found the net 230 times in English football throughout his career span covering Liverpool, Leeds United, Manchester City, Cardiff & Blackburn Rovers before heading to Australia to become the marquee player for North Queensland Fury for a season, having since made the switch to Perth Glory.
Karl Robinson, manager of the MK Dons, commented on the forthcoming arrival of Robbie Fowler:
“When his season finishes he’ll be over on a regular basis working with the forwards as part of my coaching team.”
A further Liverpool connection already exists at the Dons with player-coach Dietmar Hamann already on board alongside Robinson.
“Didi’s really stepped up to the mark, sometimes when people move on and people move forward you don’t realise how much quality they have in them,” Robinson added.
“He’s a very good coach and if he can pass a small amount of his experience on to these young players then it will only enhance the team.”
