Damien Comolli :- Saviour or mistake

Posted by

NESV or UKSV, as it is now known as,  have the made a lot of  changes at LFC at the board level and now seem ready in earnest to begin their rein as the owners of Liverpool Football Club. Tom Werner has been appointed the chairman and has recently taken over from Martin Broughton, but the real change they are making is in the footballing philosophy of the club. J. W. Henry and NESV have appointed Damien Comolli as Director of Football for LFC. the post of Director of Football is not well accepted in English football and it is more of a continental concept. in English football the Gaffer has all the say in the footballing matters and not too much help is sought by him, which has changed in recent times.

Damien Comolli has got the job because of J.W Henry’s apparent liking to statistics and their usefulness in the transfer decisions. Damien Comolli was recommended to J. W Henry by Billy Beane the manger of Oakland A’s, a baseball franchisee in America, who revolutionized the way player trading was done in baseball. Damien Comolli’s appointment has been welcomed by almost all associated with LFC and NESV has been commended on his appointment as it will provide a long term vision and structure at the club even with changing of manager. his transfer record, both as a scout for Arsenal and as director of football at Tottenham, has been thoroughly analysed by pundits and fans alike.  the general consensus seems to be that he will be a good addition to the LFC staff and will lend stability and long term vision to transfer policy of LFC.

However there has been some discordant chords struck recently regarding Comolli with both his previous employers St. Etienne and Tottenham casting a doubt over his role at their respective clubs. the criticism by both his previous employers centered around his attitude and him wanting total control over all aspects related to transfer of players, with the manager at times not having given a look at the player before signing him. another criticism leveled at him is his cockiness and self praising nature, he claims he discovered Thierry Henry for Arsenal when Arsene Wenger was the manager of Monaco when he was there. the ex- chairman of Tottenham Lord Sugar, on hearing that Comolli’s been appointed at LFC remarked on Twitter, he was a waste of space at Tottenham. almost all of his previous employers paint a bad picture of the guy from a attitude perspective and almost give an air of at worst tolerating him and at best ignoring him.

While the appointment of Comolli no doubt marks an important step forward for LFC, however before proclaiming him as the answer to all our prayers a more serious look is warranted at the criticism leveled against the man.

  1. just hope he brings in quality products like Henry, Modric and Bale into our great club.
    YNWA.

and by the way, Mr. Bhaskar, are you from India or Nepal ?

  2. Let’s see what happens. I think it’s unfair to be labelling him a mistake so soon into his LFC career.

The irony of Lord Sugar was that he was saying bad things about Comolli, yet the day before he had been praising Gareth Bale and other players signed by Comolli.

John Henry and Tom Werner have done nothing to make me lose my confidence in them yet, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt on this. They’ve brought him in because they know him, they wouldn’t have done it if they expected difficulties.

  3. He took a lot of stick at spurs for the apparent “rubbish” he brought into the team but i think that this was more down to the appointment of Ramos and his very poor show in the prem leaving us at the bottom of the table.

If you look at spurs’ team at present, Bale, ekotto, pav, modric, kaboul and i think a couple more were all scouted by Commoli and were the same players we had when rooted to the bottom but were being wasted by poor management. Now were high flying in the champions league he does rightly deserve some credit. Modric and Bale especially were absolute gems. He also brought in the best striker i have ever witnessed at spurs, the one and only Dimitar Berbatov. Whilst at spurs he scored goals that no player in the world at the time could match. He was a legend.

Last point… the mistakes Commoli did bring in were very low budget, i.e. ghaly, ziegler. If you totalled the worth of the players in the team at the moment, they far outway any losses we may have sustained throuh small purchases such as them.

Looking beyond what his record is… Liverpool have a shockingly bad youth set up and squad. LFC are in vital need of some forward thinking transfers and an injection of youth. Carragher is fading fast, konchesky is not a top 4 right back, your midfield is a mess and besides Torres where are your attacking options. It’s crazy that you have one direct replacement which is Ngog. Any top 4 team should have at least 2 or 3 known strikers

  4. It would be nice to go along with what Jack says, but Jay wright needs to have a bit of a think. Liverpool do not swap managers every 5 minutes nor should their fans slate the manager without giving him a fair crack of the whip!!

  5. MAX you are right liverpool don’t change manager’s every 5 mins but Hodgson is the exception to the rule,he’s had enough time at Anfield and he has failed miserably, and we as fan’s can and will slate any body who is not up to the job and that include’s the manager.

  6. Most Reds fans know better players than Hodgson seems to(He knows Scandinavians better though!).Even if Comolli was one of us..can’t say it is worser than Hodgson’s eye so far.
