Is Liverpool bracing for a German invasion?

Posted by

Over the last couple of weeks certain German players have linked to Liverpool in the rumour mill and now today we saw a couple of German managers linked in replacing Roy Hodgson.

Borrusia Dortmund’s Jürgen Klopp and Hoffenheim’s ex manager Ralf Rangnick have this morning been linked by respected Norwegian football analyst Tor-Kristian Karlsen.

Tor-Kristian (@karlsentk) tweeted some interesting stuff :

have from very serious sources that borussia dortmund manager jürgen klopp (head coach) was approaced about the liverpool job

jürgen klopp apparently turned down the approach. i’ve no reason to doubt credibility of the info (though it’ll be denied by both sides)

approach was apparently recent, during the past few weeks…

i’m also led to believe that ralf rangnick (coincidentally or not, resigned from his position at hoffenheim) is a candidate for the job

imo klopp is a non-starter (though excellent candidate), having just signed new contract and on route to leading bvb to title/cl qual

ralf rangnick ‘a german wenger’ if you like. empire builder advocate of attacking football. fluent in english, even got a degree i believe

should liverpool go for ralf rangnick it’d be one of the most inspired & interesting mangerial appointments ever in the premier league imo

this might be a case of 2+2=5 but also interesting that several uk newspapers are linking per mertesacker to liverpool this morning…

the germany defender came through hannover 96’s youth system when ralf rangnick was the club’s head coach…

per mertesacker’s father was also a youth coach at hannover 96 during rangnick’s time there, they’re (still) very close friends…

ppl asking about dalglish: i have no clue whatsoever. but if liverpool are serious about rangnick there’s no need to wait til end of season

Rangnick has quit Hoffenheim yesterday after failing to stop the sale of Luiz Gustavo to Bayern Munich.

This morning, many papers in the UK have reported that Kenny Dalglish is looking set to take over as L.F.C. manager until the end of the season. From the looks of it N.E.S.V. have realised that they can not keep Roy Hodgson until the end of the season as failure to qualify for any European competition would a financial disaster.

Things seem to be falling into place and I really have a feeling that something is going to happen soon.

  1. I hope you are right about something happening soon just like thousands of other Liverpool fans. Would like to hear more about the German managers as a possibility!

  2. what would be a worry about this guy is this “Rangnick has quit Hoffenheim yesterday after failing to stop the sale of Luiz Gustavo to Bayern Munich”.

The new owners want a manager that can get on with that comolli dude,?

You can take two things about a coach/ manager resigning over a player leaving, either he wants to control all, or he just see’s that club that he is working at as lack of ambition in the way they deal with players!-

Alot can be made of managers wanting their own waym, but do nesv want a manager who is going to resign over playesr dealings? of do nesv see this as a positive, it all depends on how all this is being played out in terms of what contract we give a new manager?

please nesv, bring in a man and then back him though?

  3. Putting Rangnick in charge of our club would be too funny. People would be against him right from the off, because he has won nothing during his career. He’d face the same problems as Roy.

Klopp hasn’t won anything either, but he is quite a bit younger and would fit into what NESV tend to do – signing young managers. Anyway, he me well qualify for the CL and possibly win the league so why on earth would he come to us?

  4. Sounds great after watching the germans at the last world cup and their pass and move football will really suit liverpool. I say we do it as soon as possible! We need to attack bt we need a change

  5. Interesting that you bring that up, Antoine. In today’s climate he wouldn’t stand a chance among our supporters.

  6. Do you really believe that, Antoine? If so, may I, just to bring forward one example, remind you about how one Lucas Leiva was booed by his own fans some years ago? And how people slagged him off for not being good enough and not ‘Liverpool material’.

    1. Anteater that was only a select group of fans and since then he was able to win them back.

Roy on the other hand instead of letting his actions speak he let his mouth do the talking by attacking the Kop unfortunately there is no way back for Roy now.

  7. Guys lets get something clear nesv got theo epstein in as general manager but not manager e.g like hodgson terry francano is manager and he’s 51…A German coach is fine but would rather take riijkard even tho he failed in turkey so did del bosque…

  8. As for me, i don’t bother who the NESV employed as the manager/coach of liverpool but the one that will lead us to glory come next season. Tanx

  9. Antoine, I am convinced that you’ll find an excuse for everything that fits you bill. And you’ll find an argument for whatever you want. What I am not convinced about is that you can take a different perspective on something.

Should Roy win the League with us you’d probably tell the world that it was only a select group of fans who didn’t like him. (this does not mean that I think Roy will be with us beyond this season.)

    1. Anteater, Roy will never win the league and that is a fact. He has had 35 years of managerial experience.

With all due respect you are doing the same thing “finding an excuse for everything that fits you bill.”

  10. Germany has a very good youth system amny world class playeres are coming through it. It would be a very good investment. For the present Marco Marin of Werder would be great for Liverpool.

  11. Antoine, what I try to do is pointing out that there may be another point of view. And my remark about how fellow Reds would probably welcome Mr. Ragnick was meant to be cynic. By the way, good counter-argument in your last reply.

  12. To highlight the impression I get about huge sections of Liverpool fans these days simply take a look at Amosu olekan’s reply above. ‘glory come next season’. That is what many seem to expect. Instant success. Blinding out the fact the we lost two of our best players in the last one and a half years, ignoring the fact that we finished seventh last season and many other clubs have strengthened their playing personnel way better than we did in past years. Whoever we put in charge, I don’t think that there will be instant success, especially if we want to operate within sustainable finances.

    1. Anteater, Roy hasn’t helped himself either with the comments he has made.

When they fans were protesting H&G he criticised them and this left a lot of bad blood.

After the bad performances he criticised the fans both away and then at home and that is when he lost the Kop and he will never gain the respect back.

  13. You are probably right about people connecting Roy to G & H, but isn’t that a sad state of mind? (not agreeing with you but that kind of stance) These people would shoot the messenger, wouldn’t they. And it also highlights that there is one measure for one thing (person) and a different one for anyone else. Torres was also a G & H signing.

  14. I think that while everyone would examine Rangnick’s past successes and failures obsessively, the vast majority of LFC fans would welcome him and back him to the hilt. Whilst Rafa’s previous titles/cup wins set him in good stead, the respect for him came for our shows of strength on the pitch, and off it. Whilst primarily wanting someone who can instill a brand of good attacking football, its is that hard mental attitude, defiant to the backbiting press and rival managers, that is a quality LFC fans admire most. The Shankly bastion of invincibility is what we crave.

  15. When the board got rid of Rafa, fans expected him to be replaced with a manager of similar stature, which Roy isn’t, or a younger exciting manager, which again Roy isn’t.

Instead we got Roy who everyone knows wasn’t the first choice for the position and was given the job over Kenny(who only put his name forward as he didn’t believe that the candidates being considered by the board were good enough for LFC).

Since his appointment he has continually contradicted himself, blamed everyone but himself for the dire football we are playing, has poor body language when we go behind in games, has alienated most of the fans BUT most importantly he believes the media hype and believes that his name should be up there with the likes of Shanks, Paisley and a certain Fergcuntson.

  16. Hi guys,
i come from Germany! I am really disappointed what happened to Liverpool this year. You have fantastic supporters.

Jürgen Klopp is a great manager. British people would love him ! He is an entertainer. An what is really important, he lives football. I freaks out when his team scores, even if the loose. He is a fantastic guy. But I think there is no chance for you. He won’t leave Boorussia Dortmund now. The play a fantastic football. Pressing, offesive just amazinz for such a young team. And the chance for him to win the Bundeslig is really good if you have a look at the table. Somehow, the table this year is upsidedown.
A few days ago, Jogi Löw, the manger of our german team, named Jürgen Klopp as his follower.

Ralf Rangnick, people in Germany call him “professor” . It is a story many years ago, where he tried to explain the back four in a 4-4-2 formation. he is very simalar to wenger. A fantastic coach. After his last station as manager her decided to bring Hoffenheim to the Bundesliga. It’s a village . In two year he lead Hoffenheim to the Bundesliga and in the firt year they played a fantastic football. With nameless player. He was sucessful at Schalke as well.

I hope I could give you some impressions of both managers

  17. haven’t heard anything about this here in our media. In fact I am on the office now and there is no such news. But Klopp would fit to us.

  18. WTF…Ragnick has only done well consistently with clubs below the Bundesliga level..Somebody called him “German Wenger”…Really ? By his achievements he looks nearer to “German Hodgson”!!

Klopp –Excellent, but we can never get him before the summer..He is living a dream with Dortmund!

  19. I know I would be absolutely delighted to see Mertesacker wearing the Liverpool red. Great player, great character, very fair… He would fit the bill perfectly alongside Carragher, and in the long term, Agger.

As for the manager discussion, as long as we’re rid of Hodgson, I’d be glad to support Rangnick, Klopp, or anyone else really. The only name I still see with a lot of doubt is Rijkaard’s – and apparently he’s the one being linked most often to us in the press. Anyway, it’s just a personal feeling.

  20. It never ceases to amaze me why people tend to look abroad for salvation, when there are options closer to home. Yes, Mertesacker is a good player, but Ryan Shawcross is Brtish, younger and has great potential too. He also has Premiership experience and the only problem I can see with him is that Scum Utd have first option on taking him back. As he would have potential sell on value, he’s far more likely to fit into NESVs stated business model.

On the management front, Owen Coyle has worked wonders on very limited resources with both Bolton and Burnley respectively. Coyle also has Premiership experience and has got Bolton playing an attractive style of football with much less talented players, on paper, than Liverpool. Something I thought I’d never see after Allardyce! May I also remind everybody that despite their defeat on Saturday, Bolton still sit above us in the table! Oh and before somebody asks what Owen Coyle has won, a certain Bill Shankly didn’t win anything with his previous clubs Huddlesfield and Workington! Coyle is young ambitious, media friendly and has charisma. I might also say that Martinez from Wigan is young and has good potential.

  21. Matt,I agree that we should be looking for a young exciting manager that has the potential to “grow” into his role as manager, with Kenny acting as his mentor. Nationality isn’t as important as getting the right manager but a British manager might get an easier ride with the press.

I think that most supperters would get behind a new manager and the team and give them the necessary time to get us back to the top.

  22. RedNproud, I agree that what we need is the right man for the job, regardless of his background. We haven’t done too badly with northern or Scottish managers, if you exclude Souness! I think that any potential manager will only show his hand in the Summer. It’s simply not realistic to expect somebody to ‘up sticks’ and leave in the middle of a season, especially if they’re contractually bound. The only interim solution I can see is to have Kenny in a strictly caretaker role only, until the Summer. The thing that bugs me most about Roy isn’t even the results. It’s his sheer negativity and low expectations, such as saying that he would’ve been happy with a point at home to Bolton! Never mind that he said a similar thing after the Sunderland game. He just gets you down, quite frankly! Nice guy, but naive, small-club mentality and totally out of his depth.

  23. People are pisded off because if we all wrote down 20 names on a piece of paper roy would not figure at all

  24. Great discussion here. I support Antoine’s views tho. Roy out. Mertesacker, Klopp or Rangnick can come in. I welcome the Greman invasion so long as it is not Hitler. Cheers! YNWA!

  25. To be honest I have felt that we fans have let ourselves down a bit with regardes to Hodgson. We shouldn’t be hounding managers out mid season in this classless way-we are better than this!
    However…
I would love to see Owen Coyle installed as manager in the summer, he is young, hungry plays good football with cash poor clubs and understands and respects Liverpool.
We also have history with Scotish Managers!

  26. I get the feeling that if a stop gap is going to be appointed, it won’t be Kenny. The only reason I can think that is because he’s free right now, so if it doesn’t happen this week, they must either be looking at other stop gap options or a permanent replacement. I only think they’ll act when they’ve already identified a replacement. My hunch is that it will be a stop gap until the Summer, when other quality managers become available. Perhaps somebody like Gus Hiddink, who performed a similar function at Chelsea.

  27. All the is info on Ralf Rangnick is making me think that him and Carragher could be the coaching dream ticket to lfc future.

  28. As I’ve said previously, I think Roy is totally unsuited for other reasons than merely the current run of results. He’s far too negative, too old and has a poor track record in the bigger leagues. That said, we are where we are. It would at least be fair to wait until the Summer. To sack somebody after 6 months doesn’t make any sense and is a little harsh.

One further point to note. If we’re going to compare Roy’s first year with Rafa’s, let’s at least be fair. It was an unbelievable victory in Istanbul, for sure, but it was won on penalties and we had been comprehensively outplayed. The only other trophy won during Rafa’s time was again on penalties, after being outplayed by West Ham. Rafa’s first league campagin has largely been forgotten due to Istanbul. 2004/5 season, 14 league defeats, including 11 away, 5th place and 37 points behind the champions. How many away games did Rafa win away in 2010? Answer – 1.

Yes, we can do better than Roy, but at least let’s be fair about this and give him until the Summer. regard.

  29. Nice discussion here.
Besides my feeling that Rangnick is not going to Liverpool, as he just left a long term project and might need a rest…It wouldn’t be a bad idea to sign him. He did a great job in Hoffenheim, leading the club from the 3rd league to the Bundesliga in only 4 years. Not bad at all, I’d say.

It’s not that important to have a coach who already won something. How many of them did and fail on the next job? What you need is a long term concept. Jürgen Klopp is a funny guy, but he will def not go anywhere and stay in Dortmund.

  30. Personally, I would take Martin O’Neill, he would not be a risky choice, no team he has managed has ever underachieved, he is available now, knows how to win games away from home, would not be overawed by rival managers and has connections with Dalglish through his time at Celtic. I think Kenny has been out of management for too long now and O’Neill’s success at Celtic blew everyone else’s attempts there out of the water. He also would not tolerate player cliques or player’s trying to run the team. Get him in, tell him to buy Wheater, from Boro, Warnock and, in the summer, Young, Downing and Agbonlahor, the squad would have pace, workrate, proven Premiership quality and young, English players who would serve the team well for the next 5 years. With a manager who displays a bit of passion, which is what I think the team needs more than anything.
