Today at 11AM, Liverpool finally announced the end of Roy Hodgson’s tenure as manager. This came as no surprise to us, the fans, and in all probability, Roy himself. The only surprise being that it took so long to issue his P45. The rumour is that he delivered his farewell speech to the players following our latest away day debacle at Ewood Park, a former Hodgson haunting ground.
Now that he is gone, it is hard not to have some sympathy for the man. By all accounts, Roy is a very nice man. Unfortunately, for him and us, ‘nice’ is not a prerequisite for a great football manager. He was out of his depth at Liverpool. His away record in English football speaks for itself. Just 13 away wins in 6 seasons with 3 different teams in the Premier League. Those looking for Benitez’ replacement should have recognised this as a problem.
I happen to think that Roy’s LMA award, which is voted for by his managerial colleagues, has a lot to do with his friendships built up within the game. Think about it, it’s hard to make enemies of other managers if your team hands up 3 easy points every time you visit them!
I am not going to destroy him as he doesn’t deserve that. I will wish him luck for the future & should he manage another team in the Premier League, I ask that he continues with his poor away record when next he visits Anfield.
As if the news of Hodgson’s departure wasn’t enough to send the Kop faithful in raptures, the announcement was accompanied by the disclosure that the King is to be his replacement, on a temporary basis.
Kenny may not have managed in the Premier League for 12 years, but don’t let that fool you. The man lives and breathes the game. He has the aura to impress star names, either in our squad or those we are trying to attract. He also has the affect of uni…..sorry I almost swore there, consolidating the support of Liverpool Fans behind him and the team.
Too often in the last few years, there have been divisions amongst the fan base on several facets, the pro/anti Benitez camps, pro/anti SOS movements, etc. We sang with almost 1 voice looking for his removal but believe it or not, there are still some, not many mind you, who think Hodgson should have had more time.
Some might think replacing him just over 24 hours before our visit to Old Trafford might be a bit late & wonder why not wait until Monday. Personally, I think it shows FSG/NESV’s intent on winning something. Obviously there are no guarantees here but hopefully the new manager effect will galvanise our squad into getting a place in the 4th round draw. Had they waited until after the game, the chances are we would have been out of the FA Cup too.
Here’s to Kenny renewing old rivalries with Slur Alco tomorrow and hopefully bringing a new zest, vigour and style to our play. Win or lose tomorrow, Kenny, you will have 9500 proud Scousers singing your name.
