Blackpool v Liverpool

Posted by

Since their last competitive visit to Blackpool, Liverpool have won eleven League Titles, been crowned Champions of Europe five times, won the old UEFA Cup three times, lifted the FA Cup six times, won the League Cup seven times, won the European Super Cup three times, and either won or shared the (Charity) Community Shield fifteen times.

Manager Kenny Dalglish was aged 19, and playing for Celtic under Jock Stein, Bill Shankly was managing Liverpool, Shankly’s assistant Manager back then was Bob Paisley, the First team Coach was Joe Fagan, and the Junior Team Coach was Ronnie Moran!

Blackpool’s Manager was Bob Stokoe.

The teams on August 17, 1970, in front of 28,818 were:

Liverpool: Ray Clemence, Chris Lawler, Ian Ross, Tommy Smith, Larry Lloyd (Brian Hall 44), Emlyn Hughes, Ian Callaghan, Alun Evans, Bobby Graham, John McLaughlin, Peter Thompson.

Blackpool: Harry Thomson, Jimmy Armfield, John Craven, Glyn James, Bill Bentley, Henry Mowbray, Dave Hatton, Ronnie Brown, Alan Suddick, Fred Pickering, Tommy Hutchinson. sub (not used) John Hughes.

Back row left to right: Peter Thompson, Alec Lindsay, Ray Clemmence, Tommy Lawrence, Chris Lawler, Ian RossMiddle row: Alun Evans, John McLaughlin, Larry Loyd, John Toshack, Steve Heighway, Phil Boersma, Brian Hall
Front row: Bobby Graham, Emlyn Hughes, Ron Yeats, Mr. W. Shankly (manager), Tommy Smith, Ian Callaghan, R.Paisley (Trainer).

When Kenny Dalglish was last in charge of Liverpool, Blackpool were in the old Barclays League Division 4, today however, the two Premier League teams have 25 points, and Blackpool have a game in hand over Liverpool.

Having lost to Blackpool at Anfield in early October, the players themselves should look at that defeat as motivation for the game on Wednesday. I’m sure Kenny, Steve Clarke, and all the coaching staff will be preparing all the background work in fine detail to ensure a victory tomorrow night, we all know that a quick fix isn’t really possible, but wth 100% effort from every player in every game from now on in, I for one believe the club can finally climb out of this negative hole that it’s been stuck in for some time now. A win tomorrow night, and a win on Sunday against Everton will go a long way to moving the cold dark cloud away from Anfield.

Some interesting notes for you all:
Blackpool are unbeaten in their last four games against Liverpool, winning two of those matches.
Blackpool have the worst home record in this season’s Premier League.
Dalglish’s last league match in charge of Liverpool came 19 years, 11 months and four days ago. He is unbeaten in his last five league matches as Liverpool manager, since losing 1-0 at Crystal Palace on 30 December, 1990.

My Predictions:

Blackpool 0 Liverpool 1
Liverpool 2 Everton 1
