Fernando, We Need You At Liverpool

Posted by

This is not a plea. It’s a statement of fact. The last 24 hours have been an anxious wait for many Liverpool fans wanting to know the intricacies of the Torres saga. I couldn’t sleep at night, waking up and browsing NewsNow for latest updates related to this story. Reading about Torres’ alleged transfer request sent shivers down my spine; a nightmare unfolding I thought to myself.

Even as I write this piece, I’m constantly hitting the refresh button on NN hoping to read that all important headline about Torres rubbishing rumours of his departure. Why should he leave anyway? Is it money? I’m sure he’s salary tops the list in the financial balance sheet breakdown. If not, I’m pretty sure Liverpool can sort out any worries he has about not being paid well (which I don’t think is the case).

Torres is simply adored not only by those residing in Liverpool, but by hundreds of thousands of fans across the globe. My nephew learnt the Torres song at the tender age of five and it’s thanks to Torres and Gerrard that he’s learnt to appreciate the beautiful game. Torres must understand that leaving Liverpool is not about leaving a football club; it’s about leaving home. How can he hand in a transfer request when he showed to the Football World his passion for the club by sporting a Liverpool scarf when Spain won the World Cup? How can Torres hand in a transfer request when barely two weeks ago he stated his commitment and loyalty? All of this defies belief.

Torres must understand that such a departure will lead to harsh consequences at the club he so much showed he loved. This transfer will, undoubtedly, have a ripple effect across the team and with Pepe Reina being courted by Man. Utd, I can forsee the first disastrous side-effect of this un-called for decision.

So, Torres wants to leave for Chelsea, presumably thinking Champions League football is guaranteed in London. Very untrue and very naive of Torres to think on these lines (again, assuming this is the reason). There is no guarantee Chelsea will finish in fourth spot with Spurs and Man. City fighting it all out to make it to Europe’s elite group. Liverpool, this season, have fallen down the pecking order, true, but Torres must understand that Liverpool’s problems were a result of poor ownership and team management, issues which have now been ironed out.

Kenny Dalglish taking the reigns at Anfield should be enough of a reason for Torres to stay put. No disrespect to Ancelotti, but if I had to chose between Dalglish, one of football’s greatest ambassadors as a player and manager, and Ancelotti, the decision is simple and straightforward.

Torres doesn’t need to depart. Liverpool have just secured a number one striker in Suarez and the team is showing signs of composure, mental strength, decisiveness, grit and class, all brought about by Dalglish and his coaching team led by Steve Clarke. This is a Liverpool team on the up and which can truly challenge for honours in the not so distant future.

I will now sign off. If Torres has any doubts of what playing for Liverpool means, I would suggest watching “Liverpool: One Night In May” to comprehend what being part of the Liverpool family truly means.

Torres, do the right thing. Come out and tell the whole Football World that you’re Liverpool through-and-through. Don’t throw in the towel. Don’t let us down. Think it over.

  1. my frenz and other fanatical liverpool fans in malaysia are praying the transfer of torres will not materialise, we are clicking like crazy for NN updates forgtting that we are 8 hrs earlier in time zone realizing people in UK are still much asleep..hell!!

  2. It’s too late for doubling back. The knife has been thoroughly buried into our red backs. His armband should have said he was a Blue.

  3. Torres has sealed his fate … he has asked to leave the club!

Do you know what that means ? He doesn’t want to be here, he doesn’t want to play in a red shirt again, he doesn’t want to play in front of the kop …

I’m tired of the defeatist attitude, “its the previous owners fault because they made promises” time we get over these backward ideas and remember the last year Torres has looked no better then average. Yes maybe he has lost the heart, thats cool but to point fingers at others is just lacking in many ways.

Kenny demands 100% commitment to wear the shirt and I don’t think he can give that and I dont believe he has for a while, too much water under the bridge maybe … but to ask to leave with a few days to go “im my view” is disrespectful … tell them he would go in the summer and give his all now … thats professional ! Anyway, he is allow to change his mind and if he wants to leave I have no issues but lets not force him to stay …

We are rebuilding and its clear Torres doesn’t want to be part of that … demand 50m and move him on … then pay a little over the odds for players we had highlight for the summer transfer window and get them in now! .. better to have 11 players giving there all, then keeping hold of false dreams that might turm into a nightmare by forcing him to stay … the negative effect he might have on the team is NOT worth the risk (In my view).

Now lets fight for 4th spot and show all the dis-believers what we are made of …

    Onwards and upwards …

    RR

  4. lets be honest he wants to leave to win trophies iit is also down to broken promises made by us. i dont blame the lad its a shame because he said ” i honour my contract ” he wants to go .. shame

  5. Torres belongs in Liverpool
Liverpool has always been his second home
We have always been there for him
We have always been supporting him even through The World Cup

  6. I would hate to see the back of nando but if he is keen to go then what best for all the parties should be done sell him for atleast more than 50 mil so we can buy wingers such as
ADAM JOHNSON , ASHLEY YOUNG , HAZARD , TUDAN , MARIN , HARNENDEZ , SANCHEZ , AND IF HE LEAVES best of luck for his carrer in the future and i still hope this not ture and he changes his mind as rooney did for those idiots in manchester

  7. worst than michael owen! i will wish him bad luck all the time un Chelsea and be a injury prone player and hope he will retire at the end season! idiot!

  8. No we don’t.
Let him go if he really want to.
This club is bigger than Fernando Torres and will be here long after he becomes a has-been.
I don’t understand this desperate attitude that some of you so-called fans are exhibiting. This isn’t the first time we’re losing the top striker in the club. Do the names Kevin Keegan, Ian Rush or Michael Owen mean anything to you people? Did the club fold up like a cheap suit when they left? In fact when they all left, we went on to win a major trophy (including the European title/Champion’s League twice) the following year.

Did you all only start supporting the club when Torres arrived?
I mean, come on. Buck up.
We don’t NEED Torres and we’ll be fine just without him. And if any player wants to leave this club, let them go.
Enough with this desperation nonsense, please.

  9. One small point: Hundreds of Thousands of Liverpool fans across the world should read as Tens of Millions of Liverpool fans across the world…

Another small point (mostly concerning fans from out of Europe): A lot of people – the fringe supporters – develop liking for a player and then support his team. Like people from the non-participating nations support Argentina for Messi or England for Gerrard or Spain for Torres in the world cup and other international tournaments. I know people who support Arsenal for Cesc and Barca for Messi and so on and so forth. Torres’ was the most sold shirt last year. Why? Because of Fernando? I doubt. His shirts were sold because along with his number on the back, there was the most revered badge in the front of the shirt. Liverpool made his shirt the #1 shirt in the world. I’m sure that wasn’t the case with his Spanish shirt or the Athletico shirt. But we love our players and we want them to be #1. If he goes, the fans who bought the red shirt with Torres9 on the back are not going to buy an ugly blue version of a club shirt but another red shirt, may be 8 or 7 or the new no. 9. People are sad because people don’t shift their loyalty with the player if the people in question are Liverpool Reds.

To the fans, You’ll Never Walk Alone guys…!

PS- If he stays let’s back him like we’ve backed him before, maybe more!

  10. no we dont… sell him and lets buy some reliable players… lets get tevez and aguero to play with suarez…

  11. Luke keogh, We DID NOT break any promises to Torres. The promises him and his people are talking about were made by Purslow and Broughton who knew they wouldn’t be here to have to keep them. NESV/FSG are the owner now and they did not make any promises to Torres, and so should not be accused of breaking any to him.
    So get your facts straight.

  12. if we want to sell torres, let’s push chelskies to the limit… 38 mill compare to Bent for 24 mill, charlie adam for 14 mill, young for 20 mill… do you think it’s worth…. i believe we should hold torres until summer and let’s play a bid war…. we already have suarez now…the prize should be around 50 to 55 mill for the world class striker whose age is 26 yo….

  13. Dalglish, Carragher, Gerrard, Maldini, Giggs. Any upstart can shift around looking for glory, but to be a legend, loyalty, humility and hard work are required.

  14. Let him go, if he dosnt want to play for a proper club just a billionaires play thing then that’s his choice. Going to chesea would be a big mistake as they need more investment than we do, drogba, lampard, terry anelka, alex, cole, cech, essien, etc etc all the wrong side of 30. An ageing side which for me is a huge factor in their poor form. And as financial fair play is coming their billionaire owner won’t be abe to throw money around. I for one hope that the premier league broadcasting deal ends and each club has to negotiate their own deals, we will then see who are the big boys the likes of chelsea won’t be able to live with us. Ynwa.

  15. Let him go. He has asked to go so he is not happy. Couple that with the fact that he really is not reliable and shows still his frailty then we should cash in on the offer and use the £35M+ to get a more reliable attacker. Suarez will flourish and is much more resillient and stronger in his approach. There are others out there!
Chelsea are begin to decline and I can see them nack in the middle regions of the EPL in a few years time when the new monetary rules begin to bite. We on the other hand are laying good solid groundwork for the years to come. Once more…He wants to go then let him go. If we gorce him to stay we know just how trucullent he can be on the field. We are warned!

  16. If Torres left at the end of the season and to a non rival, then you could’nt blame the lad. Torres is a winner and he beleives that Champions league football is a must and in a position to compete for domestic honours. LFC are miles away from this. HOWEVER, to leave now before the end of the season is wrong, he owes us that a least.

  17. Torres was us torres was lied to same as usbut he was a player for the fans i cant beleve he would do this he has won the biggest trophy in the world . stevie gerrard didnt win the world cup ?
Marco van basten didnt win world cup he stayed at ac milan
Torres has won world cup and euro all this just for champions league WHY his payed welli really understand leaving us for athletico madrid.
we all were lied to its getting better i think his agent has given him this advice to do this to get suarez in YOU PULLED THE HEARTS OF EVERY SUPPORTER IN THE WORLD OUT AND CHILD.
    AND IM IN AUSTRALIA

  18. I say let him go and take the money and buy a better player.
It is really disgusting of him to said that he will honour his contract not long ago and then turn in his transfer request at this time. I can truly respect him if he were to go back to Spain, but going to Chelsea? WTF! He can wait til the end of the season can he? Help Liverpool to a higher league standing and leave, we will all respect that and he will be a Legend no less. Why abandon us now? It just doesn’t make any sense…. Disgusting!

    1. This is turning out to be like Gerrard’s refusal to sign a new contract in 2005. He stated his intentions to leave and we all thought it was done, only for the skipper to backtrack. We all do mistakes, and we can remedy. Fernando, do the right thing.

  19. let torres go if can bring 60m funds to rebuild new team, i like use carvani (25m) or Llorente (25m) or ola travoinen (15m) partner with our new king LUIS SUAREZ . honda (15m) and hazard or young (15m) & adam (8m) . CD buy subotic (15m) & taiwo (free)

    buy suarez 23m , Llorente 25m , hazard or young 15m or turan 12m , honda 15m , adam 8m , m’vila 15m , subotic 15m , taiwo free ,warnock 5m abt 120m

  20. Torres leaving will break many fans’ hearts. But Torres going to Chelski would be like twisting the knife. Keep some dignity and repay some of the adulation you have received over the years and at least stay till the summer and go abroad or even to City. Jumping to the cockney scum would be a betrayal too far.

  21. first, liverpool is not his home. get real, it’s atletico.

this is the time to materialize your words “no one is bigger than the club”. let him if he wants to go. wish him luck. begging is not our way and no player is irreplaceable at liverpool. I hope the management find his replacement in these 2 days. we already have suarez and the team will be much better if it doesn’t depend on one-two players. teamwork, commitment, and hardwork, those count more than a big name. he wont find any passion and love anywhere like that from liverpool fans. Alonso admits it.

with players like gerrard, meireless, reina, suarez, reina, kelly and others + 50 million with king kenny at the helm, no way liverpool will go down on the ladder.

    YNWA

  22. let him go.we dont nid an unhappy player.we are liverpool, the most decorated.we will always thrive in adversity and will not wqalk alone.this is bill shankly’s team, its bob paisley’s team, its kenny dalglish’s team, its rush’s team.who the hell does torez thinbk he is?

  23. christ dude grow a pair will ya.torres handed in a transfer request with two days left in the transfer window knowing damn well wat a difficult position it was going to place the club in.for watever reason, its crystal clear that nando wants out.i was as shocked as anyone by the way he has handled the whole scenario so far.i truly beleived he had more respect for liverpool than too try and jump ship in da middle of a season.i guess we live and learn.personally id keep him until the summer when there is sure to be a bidding war for his services, which in turn will crank up his price.with that money king kenny can then reinvest in a new team with players who are privlaged and honoured to wear the liverbird on there chest.

  24. also karl, its worth realising this one tiny little detail.we are liverpool football club.if el nino does not want to be here, then good luck to him.it aint the end of the world like your making out.liverpool football club was sucessful long b4 torres arrived and it will be sucessful again long after hes gone.

  25. Was Torres playing poorly deliberately to devalue his transfer fee which was being quoted at 70 million last year…looks like this might not be a sudden as we’re led to believe..did Broughton do a deal with Nesv to hand over reigns of LFC on condition Torres goes to his team, Chelsea?Just a conspiracy theory to throw into the mix.Why did they leave it so late in the transfer window?

  26. everything is mystery.
    i dont understand why.
but as he ‘officially’ requested transfer
    that is backstabbing the kops.
    all the kops feel betrayed.
and i will rather let him go to wherever he wants.
even if he stays, the kop will not love him as much.
but i have one little hope.
i dont want to see him in the same league with liverpool
and i dont want to see him shooting toward our goal.
    and fouling on our players
and celebrating with his teammates that are not reds.

    1. Latest news pouring in is that Liverpool are negotiating a deal which includes Anelka. We don’t need left-overs, the price should go up to, at least, 60m. It’s already a nightmare to have your star striker depart for a rival team. The fact that both club and player haven’t issued too many statements means either negotiations are ongoing to sort out a deal or Torres is being talked into staying (rumours have it that Stevie and Kenny are involved).
