So Torres wants to leave…

Posted by

Fine. But he should leave on the club’s terms, not his.

I’d like him to stay and I think he should. But I’d prefer to talk about the players who want to be at Liverpool rather than the ones who are jumping ship.

First there’s Gerrard. He has run the show at Liverpool for ten years. Whenever we have gone through slumps in form he has took games by the scruff of the neck and changed things with his feet on the pitch, not by walking away.

Then there’s Carragher. For years he was treated as a utility player whilst others were preferred ahead of him. Did he complain? No. He played right back, left back, centre back; he probably would have taken on the role of goalkeeper had he been asked to.

And both players have had their loyalty rewarded with numerous medals including the Champion’s League.
But it’s not just players who have come through the ranks at the club who have shown loyalty. There are players who have joined more recently who have been just as loyal.

Reina, for example, hasn’t used our poor performances to sulk. When Stevie and Jamie eventually step down, he is the natural person to take over as captain. His leadership qualities have been demonstrated countless times. He has inspired team huddles, encouraged players to have confidence and generally played with the passion that any Liverpool player should.

And even Lucas. Although he’s not everyone’s cup of tea he has gradually improved and turned in many solid displays, particularly over the last year. Again, the lad has never complained about his position in the team, neither when he was starting games on the bench, nor when he was slated and his performances were being compared unfavourably with those of the excellent Alonso. He just kept working away, glad of the chance to be a part of the club, and slowly he’s started to win the fans over.

Even now, with only an outside chance of qualifying for next year’s Champion’s League, players are showing that they would love the opportunity to play for Liverpool.

Both Suarez and Adam pleaded with their clubs to let them join us.

This was particularly positive in the case of Suarez as he was already challenging for a league title with Ajax yet he was still excited by the prospect of playing for us.

No player should ever become bigger than Liverpool Football Club, no matter how good they are. Because for every player who runs around the pitch with a scowl on his face, for every player who isn’t happy and for every player who hands in a transfer request, there are many more who would give anything to be at our club.

  1. It’s situation like this that makes me love Carra and Stevie so much more.

Others may cut and run…..true reds never do!

  2. Excellent peice as always, but this is the truth. No player is bigger than any club. As you say if he wants to go let him but this has to be the clubs terms not his. We will recover if he goes and we will forgive him (in time) if he stays. Either way we are Liverpool FC and we will never walk alone.

  3. Spot on, mate. No player will ever be bigger than LFC.
You are right about some of the players too. I’m not a big Kuyt fan but his approach to the team sums up what is needed.
I’m sick of seeing a sour face every other game, sulking and at times looking like there is no focus or passion.
A fit and hungry Torres is a truly great player but there are more components needed in order to make legendary status. This kind of current behaviour only promotes infamy and mistrust.
He has some big choices to make here, ones that he must get right. He’ll never be seen in the same light again though imo.

  4. im sick of it all day ,torres this torres that, hes after a pay rise, just match chelseas wage and get on with football. by the way all this shite has over shadowed our suarez what a player , hes good for 15 befor the end of season so .come on think thats what all the prem, want to unsettel us .so stay strong and belive in the reds………………………………..

  5. just got told that chelsea have offered the 50 mill hes going……………………………………………..

  6. let him go kenny will do good with 50mil in his back pocket we’ll all be looking back in a years time wondering what we were worried about

  7. Adios Torres I lost all my respect for u u are not even my favorite player anymore I will never cheer for u anymore today I thought I would rejoice over suarez but then u ruin my day by handing in a transfer request just when it looks like we might get CL what a quitter leaving us in truly hard times

  8. the thing with Gerrard and Carragher is they are liverpool lads have won all there is to win bar the prem title and are paid handsomely to boot, that type of loyalty isn’t so hard to put in place.T orres isn’t even english never mind a scouser, yes he’s well paid but he’ll get money where ever he goes, but he has no domestic trophies, isn’t playing in the CL and isn’t getting any younger are you really surprised he wants to leave?

  9. If he wants to go then let him but sell him to a team outwith the EPL. We all know the lads quality & we all know he`s had broken promises i bet he`s been looking at the transfer window before the Saurez deal & said to himself fuck it no new signings im off!! If he goes fair enough but dont go to Chelski Nando please dont.

  10. Everybody knows that Gerrard wanted to go to Chelsea too.He nearly did.So why is any different just because is Torres.Gerrard and Carrager played big part in Benitez being sacked so maybe Torres is sick of knowing that Gerrard and very limited player like Carrager run the football club called LFC. It was Gerrard who wanted an english manager in the shape of Roy Hodgson and we all know what happened. I am gutted that he wants to go but i dont blame him at all. But why Chelsea El Nino WHY, WHY. If it was Barcelona than i would wish you the best of luck but the Rentboys, my God why, why, why. My six year old boy idolises you El Nino. He is very upset that you want to leave. He keeps asking why is he going to Chelsea because they are rubbish and we dont like them. He also keeps asking me that if he goes to Chelsea what do i do with my jersey with Torres name on it. My boy is heartbroken El Nino. Please dont go to the Rentboys . Porfavor El Nino, porfavor

  11. The name on the back of the shirt will never be bigger than the badge on the front of the shirt , make torres stay til the end of the season and then let barca and man citeh join chelsea in a contest to sign el nino , ynwa

  12. We shoud let Torres go if a suitable bid comes in. No point having an unhappy player trying to struggle with the fans expectations on his shoulders. We could use the money to further improve the squad with players who want to be at the club and are determined to help the cause.

  13. Ok, first of all, what a brilliant piece. I have to admit, before I read I was, like many, pretty angry about the news of Torres handing in his trasnfer request. After reading, i’ve remembered what this club is all about, its about passion, desire, heart and an outstanding love for the game shared between the players, the manager and most importantly the fans. Fernando is by a long way the best striker we have had since (I’d say Fowler) but many would say Rush – but the difference is the guy quite obviously doesnt want to be a part of the club any longer. I mean, compare him to (as a few others have mentioned) the likes of Carragher, Gerrard and even Lucas. They pull on the shirt and they do a job whatever the situation at the club, they dont complain and I’d also like to say how much I DO rate Dirk Kuyt he epitomises this club and I am genuinley happy when I see him on the team sheet. Ever since last night i’ve been hoping this would be similar to the news that Gerrard was joining Chelsea in 2005 (I think) but you know what, we dont need Torres, no players bigger than the club you hit the nail on the head I think he should see this season through until the clubs in a better position to replace him and after that, thank you for all the memories, goodbye and good luck. As for the news on Suarez, im excited. Very excited. Hes strong, quick, and most of all has the natural skill that Liverpool players should have, I think he could be another hero.

  14. Great article. It’s pretty sad to me that we should be celebrating the addition of a great new player, rather than this bitterness cuz we have learned one of our own does not bleed red…..I’m distraught and at a loss of words.

  15. If you get cancer in your dick you gotta cut it out or cut it off… it don’t matter that its your dick as your life is more important!.
Torres was riddled with injury at Madrid then Liverpool and this will continue at Chelsea plus this is a player with no heart. 50 million for Torres is a great bit of business for LFC.

  16. Spot on bro…
I do respect Torres, but wanting to leave when the owners have invested on Suarez and King Kenny at the helm and we fans behind him…makes me think twice about Torres.
If he wants to leave let him after the season and atleast not to Chelski.

  17. Whoever we get, give them the 9 shirt and wipe this sorry mess away. It completely wreaks of a scam to get higher wages, and to be honest, I’m not sure he actually warrants it. No doubt any team he now joins will see him revitalized and he’ll probably make us all wonder what would have been if he’d stayed, but he is clearly unhappy, and that attitude is unlikely to change unless he moves on. Players at their core are generally there because their getting paid, and we shouldn’t really be surprised that when the opportunity comes to get more cash – they’ll take it. Who hasn’t done that in their working life? Of course it helps when the people you work with and the company are great, but leaving for more money always makes sense to the individual…

I agree that no one is bigger than the club, but the club is bigger for the players we who have worn the shirt.. Torres in his prime (like Keegan and Fowler before him) were club legends, but once they want out, set them free – and move on.

I think we are on our way up, and Chelsea seem to be heading in the other direction. Whether Torres leaves in this window or the next (let’s face it, he will leave someday soon) we’ll all buy new shirts, another hero will come (and for 50 mil, will probably get 2-3 heroes), and like previous generations, we’ll heal and our club will still be strong.

  18. kenny pls if a deal can be done b4 monday 12:00am sales torres and get another striker like pato ac milan/jone sunderland/aguero atlentico marid or ronaldiho to lfc and let the idiot leave pls pls pls.

  19. Clearly his heart isn’t where Ours is and few players are unlike Carra and gerrard. I am getting tired of what football rePresents these days. There is very little loyalty – that loyalty is fr the fans to the clubs. We idolise the players And they are transient. The club and fans are permanent. 50m in cash in the summer or he rots until may as he will definitely sulk. His head is elsewhere now and wont be focussed on the team. Unfortunately he is akin to most players and only think about themselves. If he really wants to win trophies his timing and destination are very wrong. Thanks for the wonderful goals and you won’t feel the same as you did posing for LFC

  20. Torres is moving on, who can blame him, another Trophyless season is approaching, another Europa Cup exit beckons,no wonder he wants out!l/pool just make up the numbers these days and King Ken must be gutted.

  21. Nando has seen the light at last. He just doesn’t want to fritter away his career at a club who haven’t won their domestic league title since he was 5 years old. He gave it a go!

  22. u let us down TORRES fuck off now we never had u in big story in 2005 u can fuck off u r so horabl nasty…………..

  23. Correct me if I’m wrong – Gerrard changes things on the pitch, not by not walking away? Didn’t he try to join Chelsea – twice!!

  24. Torres frm today i ll not suport u again wat a heart break u are coursn us by submitng transfer request during ur difficult time when were having injury upon injury we were patient with u now u have got ur self back see wat ur doing u better have a rethink and commit ur self back no club ll treat u like our dear club d reds as long as epl game is concern

  25. Problem is that if you had to do the same article 3 days ago Torres would be put next to Gerrard, Carra and Reina (BTW Lucas is not in that league yet…)

Funny you mention Steve G, He was going to leave Liverpool twice with Chelsea remember? And why? because his contract took some time longer than his buddies to be offered again due to a beurocracy issue and he thought it was a good excuse to wear the blue shirt cause of that.
He didn’t and he gained back his respect but he was leaving Liverpool with a more lame excuse than Torres.

My Point: you can never rely on a player. The crest is everything, the problem of many fans is that sometimes they do get carried away with players and they act as if they are there forever. Well today we all learned a lesson haven’t we?

To conclude: We should bag the €50 mil and let the spaniard go and concentrate more on what is important.. Hence a stronger squad, a stronger Liverpool…

Ps: Torres should burn his armband

  26. Torres pls go !!!

Not YOU or any other player can be bigger than the club – especially LFC. You’re supposed to be a professional and paid to do what you’re good for but you have not live up to your reputation as of late. Your body language on the field shows that you are tired of playing for LFC.

You’ve gone back on your words and it’s time for you to eat them.

I would urge that Kenny/Damian have a good look at Llorente – who’s anytime as good as an injury-prone Torres. He and Suarez should be a fantastic pair-up.

  27. Whenever a club has domestic problems as in the case of Hicks & Gillet, players being professional should just carry one and do what they’re paid to do. They should know that they’re not in any position to prevent or solve the problem. Likewise, they should NEVER use this as an excuse for their bad performances.

Sadly, this has not been the case as many times, we hear about players whining that they are not going to win any silverware but have they truly ask themselves whether that’s due to the club problems or their own attitudes?

I believe the reason’s the latter because they start to feel sorry for themselves instead of the club – the one they supposedly pledged to win silverware for.

we are slowly improving – thanks to the King’s committment and encouragement. I hope that Torres’ leaving will not demoralise the rest of the team members as they still have a job to do, which is to attain the best performances so that we can still say that we are a still a top club and one of the Best in the World.

    You’ll Never Walk Alone ……

  28. I would be more happy if he left for a non-Premier club, I’d celebrate his time with us. Hurts that he doesn’t understand the rivalry in the League.

Though I will not judge him on his choice to leave, he’s been good to us up till now. YNWA Fernando

  30. I think we should sell him. Just wish him luck and thks for the service. But he is no longer the kop idol and welcome here. Only time will tell whether he made the right decision. Who knows he might end up like judas owen! Won nothing after left the club.

  31. I hope Chelsea have a nice treatment table ready for the sulker, Torres!!!!!! When the going gets tough, Torres gets off!!!

  32. I say take the money, take them for a ride like AJAX did to us over Suarez, let them both sweat ( both Torres & Abramovich) continue trying to improve the squad & leave this bit of business till the 11th hour, use it as a diversion to throw the papers off our real targets. If it was me 50MIL no less + a player (I wouldn’t take Daniel Sturridge as he’s but a bench player who does nothing for me up front, Nicolas Anelka will be 32 in March, knows Liverpool but is basically a hired gun but he lacks that dominant presence so if I was to take a player as well as 50MIL I’d take Salomon Kalou because he can play as a left wing as well as a striker so he has more versatility than Anelka, he’s 25yrs old & his wages are half that of Anelka’s & he’s played over 200 games for Chelsea in all comps so he has more experience than Sturridge & I would use the money to nail down a TARGET MAN & maybe a LB.
