The Fernando Torres Saga: In Terms of a Relationship

He cheated on us. Liverpool and the fans were in a relationship with Fernando Torres and he cheated on us. Not only did he cheat on us, he did it with one of our enemies- Chelsea. Like in most unfaithful relationships I believed him when he said he was “as committed to the club and its fans as he was the first day he joined”. I thought that this man was going to be the next Ian Rush or Kenny Dalglish. But instead he broke our hearts.

Like in any typical ex relationship at first I hoped that he would be miserable with his new club/whore Chelsea. I hoped that he would come running back to us and we would accept him because he was once a big part of who we are and we do not let anyone walk alone. But now I’ve gotten more realistic. I hope he’s happy with his new relationship. I hope he gains something from being there and that he is successful (but not as successful as us).

We’re moving on. We are courting new players. He left us with a good alimony; enough for us to get by and get fresh players in our club. We are starting a new relationship with Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll. As in any relationship after an adulterous one, I am a little insecure. I think that maybe Suarez and Carroll will do the same thing as Torres and Owen and leave us for one of our rivals. I hope that this man is different, that he will be more faithful to us. He will make us the best possible club we can be. We will never know the future. We can only have faith that everything will work out for us.

This is suppose to be a bit satirical, but in all seriousness, we, the fans of Liverpool FC, have been blessed with faithful players (granted the few exceptions) for most of our history. We have been incredibly lucky and much more fortunate than other clubs. Our past players’ loyalty has made the betrayal of Torres more hurtful because it is something we are thankfully not use to. And since this is something that we don’t have to deal with every transfer window it has made me more cautious about being totally reliant on Suarez. I just hope the future of Liverpool is as bright as the past. So I would like to propose a toast the man wearing the legendary no. 7 and Liverpool’s new no. 9; may they find happiness and support with us and play like champions. YNWA
