“I told the club to listen to that offer as that is the team I wanted to play for. It’s one of the best, if not the best, club in Europe” – Fernando Torres, July 2007.

“They [Chelsea] are one of the biggest teams in Europe and are always fighting for everything” – Fernando Torres, January 2011.

It could all have been so different. Instead of leaving the club as a legend, as Alonso did, Fernando Torres has left a pariah. In my eyes, he has committed a far more serious crime against my club, and our fans than Michael Owen ever did.

We all know about his “You’ll Never Walk Alone” captain’s armband at Atletico. We thought it meant something, we thought he was red. We took him to our hearts, we thought he understood us, thought he was one of us.

Typically, when he was good, we cheered, sang his name, bounced his bounce! When he was poor, we sang louder, bounced higher because that is the Liverpool Way. Even over the last 18 shocking months, Torres was supported to the hilt.

Wanting a move away from Anfield is a player’s prerogative. It’s about handling your departure with dignity. Torres has none. Two weeks ago, he claimed to be as committed to Liverpool FC then as he was on day 1. 3 days before the transfer window shut, he put in a transfer request. A move completely absent of honour.

“I’m at a big club now” – Fernando Torres, January 2011.

That quote is another example of Torres’ complete lack of class. Perhaps the Chelsea move is perfect for him. They won’t support him as we did. Remember, they booed Drogba. They won’t love him as we have. On the plus side though, he will fit in with new petulant, moping, sulking strike partners, Drogba and Anelka.

Liverpool FC is a family, Chelsea is a rich man’s folly. Once the Financial Fair Play rules come into affect, the aging Chelsea squad are going to find difficult to challenge and Abramovic will find it difficult to rebuild. Torres could be their last big signing for some time. I hope he enjoys his stay at Stamford Bridge Old Folk’s Home.

He may not wake up this morning, rueing his move. He may not even regret it on Sunday. But once he realises all that he has forsaken, the true support he received from the Kop replacing that with fickle ‘plazzy flag waving’ fans, he will regret it.

To borrow a phrase from Barcelona fans to Figo, “We hate you so much, because we loved you so much”. Your name may appear in our record books, but you’ve forsaken your place in our history.

  1. he will never hear the support from the fans like only liverpool can give.the day will come when he feels hes gone deaf.

  2. One of the worst things to come out this morning is the fact that Torres has said that Liverpool and Chelski were negotiating for 2 weeks before the transfer happened. If that is the case, Torres said he was as committed as ever when he knew there was a chance he would leave. That also means that with Chelsea submitting a bid only 3 days before the end of the window, they have tapped him up. I would report the b*stards, I really would. I am gutted about him leaving, absolutely gutted. Carroll and Suarez are here now and there was a lot of excitement about it last night but in the cold light of day, we have lost a world class striker who claimed to be one of us. He will play on Sunday and I never thought I would see the day that our own ‘Nando’ would be playing for another English club. What he has shown though is that he is not different, he is one and the same as any other footballer on this planet. It is a job for them, nothing more and they will move, severing all ties of loyalty, so that they can be paid a bigger wage packet.

  3. The ‘scab’ insulted LFC…instead of feeling hurt forget he ever existed. Just treat him as a name, nothing more, since he deserves nothing more.

You mentioned Michael Owen but I don’t see how the two compare. The club allowed his contract to run down, and was running around like a headless chicken one day when they suddenly realised they could lose him on a free. His move to Man Utd cannot be criticised either no matter how irritating it is to see him wearing that shirt.

  4. An enormously talented player but truely lacking in dignity as a person. In the end it is true class and a true person that wins. As they say you can buy pretty much anything with money but you can never buy class.

  5. Julian, I fully agree with you, when I think back over the past 18 months when we were really struggling to keep our heads above water we watched as Torres limped, sulked, threw hissy fits, failed to tackle, fell to the ground if the wind was too strong or could not play due to another injury…and in spite of this we still gave him our support. Its a bitter pill to swallow to hear him mouthing off about Chelsea and I hope the traitorous swine is happy there, he will never be welcome at Anfield as far as I am concerned.

  6. Julian, your comments undoubtedly come from the heart, and I understand your emotions perfectly. Torres could have left with dignity, praising the club and fans for nurturing his talent, for lifting him to stardom, for chanting his name even when he was not playing, out due to injury. He could have become a legend at Liverpool. He showed he is blind, arrogant and preferring to achieve things the easy way (although I repeat he is in for a rude awakening).

I still demand answers to the way he left, we definitely don’t want a repeat.

In the mean-time watching Andy Carroll videos proves that Liverpool have brought over a great player, simply put. Who needs Torres when we can now boast of having England’s future number one striker? The club has been on the up since NESV took over and with King Kenny around, the old Liverpool way has been ushered in.

    Spirits high.

  7. a big thank you to torres for getting us back on track, we needed to get rid of him as he was a none trier, so to get 50 million to buy two goal scoring triers is as good a result as we could dream of. he has definately cost us more points than he has won us this season, we were continually under pressure because he was not trying to close down defenders so it made it easy for the. good riddence.

  8. Torres could of left us with the grace and style Luis Suarez has left Ajax.. He thanked them for their support..thanked them for their love and said he was sad to go but will always have them in his heart… That Fernando is CLASS something you truly lack by your comments last night. I understand why we let you go so easily. You don’t have the Liverpool mentality

  9. We bought a lad who loved the reds Torres Torres
But then he sulked and lost his cred Torres Torres
The boy who came from sunny Spain
Can now fuck off to home again
Fernando Torres the Judas who loves to whine

    CUNT

    Nanananananana………………………………………..

  10. I remember twitter baying Benitez to leave- love him now?

Xabi Alonso was crap as far as most fans at time said, after Pako left Benitez left him out big time- had no choice but leave- want him back now?

Torres does not want to become the “old man” Gerrard is- tied to club. This is a JOB, his job his life.

Good luck Torres in everything you do, you brought ME entertainment.

  11. Please stop talking about this guy again, im sick and everyone also sick of him. nobody believe every single word that coming out of his mouth. he acts like 7 years old kid. now he was only the past and lets start step forward to see our future with our new suarez and carroll. so pleasee lets forget him …

  12. Michael Owen wanted personal glory more than club that’s why he left us for Madrid. He returned to Newcastle not for personal trophy or what, but rather cementing a place in the England Squad. That in my opinion is as selfish as person could be.

He could have joined Hull and not Man Utd should he want to play week in week out. He still hopes to be in the England Squad. He thinks that playing for United would have a higher chance than for Hull should he want to be successful. And so he chose our greatest rival; Man Utd. Mind you, he COULD have said no, but he said yes.

Fernando Torres words contradict his current actions. He let the club and fans down but will chelsea fans cheer him on during their bad times like how ours did? I don’t think so.

  13. Torres Chelsea have money but Liverpool have CLASS.You have let down the Liverpool fc and the fans who you were priveliged to play in front of.However You and Chelsea are right for each other 3rd rate club 3rd rate man.

  14. Owen fecked the club around for months and months before Rafa arrived and forced the club to see sense: Owen was deliberately running his contract down and had to be sold immediately. Mcmanaman fecked us even more. At least we have got £50m for Torres, the club has played this one properly. I have total belief in King Kenny and NESV. They’ve been spot on in every step they have made. We might have overpaid £10m or so for Carroll but he will be a massive hit at Anfield, as will Suarez and I expect we will sign big in the Summer too as it seems to me the owners were ready to spend 30+ net in this window (whereas they are only flat as FT+RB=AC+LS). The point about FFP is spot on. I don’t understand why FT thinks this is a good move, the lad’s clearly nowhere near as bright off the field as he is with the ball at his feet. Our future is bright…

  15. Like you said, the think that hurts the most is how he completely played all the fans into believing that Liverpool was the only club for him..

Unfortunately he is not Reina, Gerrard or Carragher. He is just another player trying to earn a massive pay check :(

  16. Agree with everything Julian said, couldnt have put it better myself.
time to move on now forget Torress and look to the future, its gonna be a red one :)

  17. Ahmad Zaman – I agree totally with you about Owen, he may play for Utd now but never went straight to them like the traitor Torress, and how can he have told us he was committed to us whilst all the time holding talks with Chelski

  18. RUBBISH – how history is re-written.

The club did not let Owen’s contract run down HE did and he did it deliberately so that he could move on for a ridiculously low fee and inflate his salary because of it.

Owen is scum (like McMannaman)but it really is quite poetic to think that he should have proven himself an utter failure since he left Anfield and finish up in the Old Toilet.

Nando you’re a an idiot for leaving as time will tell… we never forget.

    Hasta la vista sucker.

  19. The best way now not to enhance is ego is to forget and ignore him, after all he helped us win nothing. Lets prove him that he has made the wrong choice by stepping up notch or two as a club. Hopefuly the players are also upset that Torres feels they are below him and show him how they feel in their performance on sunday and the rest of the campaign.

  20. Oh well may be he was misled by his pals in spain he should have made his move a glorious one for lfc fans.As the case is,he will forever be seen as a Traitor by lfc fans and those who understand club-football.’TORRES IS A MURDER FUCKING IDENTITY’ HE WILL NEVER BE WELCOME AS A KOP.Thierry henry is legend at arsenalfc because majority at arsenal were satisfied with the circumstance by which he left.Even Suares didn’t force himself out of Ajax- but by dialogue because he did not want to offend fans and friends at ajax and this will make him one of ajax legend. As of Torres,he’s out and we have to focus on working hard probably to make him regret that stupid transfer request he submitted.SO,TO ALL LIVERPOOL PLAYERS LIKE JOE COLE,MAXI,LUCAS IT IS TIME TO SHOW TORRES THAT YOU ARE NO FLOPS AND THAT YOU GUYS CAN GO PLACES.

  21. Forgotten about. Good end to the season and bring on August. Suarez and Carroll up front gives us a lot of tools. Pace, power, trickery, aerial ability, directness, aggression, attitude, hunger. Keep them fit and get some decent width in the team and we’ll intimidate most defences. Forget about price tags, you can’t play a £50 million pound cheque up front. I’ve complete faith in the manager and the board to take us where we want to go. Give Kenny a 4-year contract and I’d be optimistic about landing a title before it’s up. He knows what we want and he knows how to deliver it. I wouldn’t waste any energy on Fernando any more. He’s made his bed and he can lie in it. What goes on at this club is far more important and always will be. Carroll will be available for Europa league this season so hopefully we can add a bit of silverware to the trophy room come the summer. Final in Dublin too so it’d be like a home game should we reach it.

  22. I’m sorry but I refuse to dismiss Torres for wanting to leave. We all knew he would want to leave for a team that has more shots at trophies. And he did. He was the one that put us in contention for the first time in a decade, he was the driving force in our runner-up finish in 2009. So, give the guy a break. You can’t expect a world-class player to endure such messy times at a club when a Champions League side is chasing him.

I would always rank him above Michael Owen, because he ran to Real Madrid then went where I would loathe to see him most. I am always gutted to see a Liverpool kid playing for Manchester United -much more than seeing a Spaniard leaving for a title-prospect club.

  23. Justin, well written the last line We hate you so much, because we loved you so much”. Your name may appear in our record books, but you’ve forsaken your place in our history. The pain will be there for some time, the last time i felt this low was when Robbie was sold anyway we have a new chapter the kings back to get the Throne back were it belongs

  24. Torres realise team lackin of money to fulifil 2 position, I am sure torres love liverpool more than manu and sacifice himself for the team. liverpool now has two potential forwards although they both are not fascinating as Torres staying.
Please not blaming or threatening Torres but go to see manu and The Alex Ferguson and Gary Neville. Manu fans are the one who threat torres life not the liverpool fan, I am sure.

  25. Another sad day for football, the last time we saw loyalty was wen Stevie g snubbed the blue and stayed wer his heart belonged, we r lucky we have at least 2 players like that the other being carra!!!b4 that matt le tissier was the last man I remember staying loyal to the club he loved and he was good enough to play in any team on the world!!!! But I think we owe it to ourselves as Lpool fc supporters to be true to ourselves and not boo or slate Nando cause he was a god wen here and give us plenty of rays of sunshine in the darkest years this club has ever bin through!!!

  26. Totally gutted Torres decided to act the way he has done over the last few days. I really thought the guy had more class. God knows as fans we want to be a successful club, but just at the moment things are a little difficult. That said there is without doubt light at the end of the tunnel.

I really hope Torres realises what he has done and issues some sort of apology – as fans we stood by him and right now if he walked into Anfield I really don’t think he’d walk out again. The guy has let us all down and I’m sorry but I’ll not look at him with any degree of professionalism for some time.

But he’s gone and we need to look to the future. Kenny has definitely lifted the club and I believe the owners responded quickly to our needs. We now have two great strikers that along with the rest of the squad can really push on up the league.

Reckon we need two wingers, a centre back and a left back in the summer, but the squad is better now than it was before the deadline.

Torres thanks for the first couple of seasons but you need to remember what LFC did for you and more importantly what the fans did.

To Andy and Luis – welcome on board, you’re at a great job and let’s get it buzzing again.

  27. Spot on Julian, every word. I understood his reasons, to a point, for wanting to leave, but why to Chelsea only he will know. I daresay 200k a week is a big deciding factor.

I wished him well, not too well, but, he left me with fond memories. Then I saw his first interview as a Chelsea player.

And now I, and I suspect almost all, Liverpool supporters the world over, will never, EVER, forgive him for twisting the knife in one evil, vile sentence “It is every players dream to play for a big club, and I am doing that now”

Hurtful. And to the fans that held him so dear.

Now, I hope he breaks both legs in his first game and never plays another game, becuase for that ultimate betrayal, he deserves it.

Enjoy your time at Chelski Fernando Traitor-es, hope you had a good long look at the European Cup beofre you left, because you’ll never see it again.

  28. I mite add that history has always shown with no excetions, wen I striker leaves this club they r a shadow of their former selves and never reach the heights they did at anfield, one man who saw sense and came back became the greatest goalscorer in English football, the one and only ian rush!!!!

  29. Another back stabber , just like gillette and hicks , says one thing then shits on our club ,
You need to appoligise to the fans Torres its the least you can do ,

  30. Fernando Torres at Chelseafc.com :

..”I only have good words about Liverpool. They made me a top player and gave me the chance to play at the top level,I will never say anything bad about Liverpool” ..Sad he left, but he still had good words to say”..

Did anybody read this? He did not say only bad things as the press makes you believe..

  31. Well Michael Owen may have helped run down his contract, but at 18 months, the Board should have taken responsibility by either:
    1. forcing Michael into signing a new contract
    1. selling him

I agree Mr McManaman was the pioneer in all this, and one would have thought the Board learnt their lesson…clearly not!

What I find offensive about the ‘scab’ thing is that the entire thing was like a ‘smash and grab’ raid (or ‘blitzkreig’), suddenly and out of the blue, whilst the club were making long-term plans…something made more difficult if one of your main players suddenly spits his dummy and demands a move.

However I would add I’m not sure all is well at Chelsea…they dump Ray Wilkins, then spend a huge amount on the ‘Scab’ whilst posting huge losses…

  32. Let us treasure the faithful and loyal players amongst us now, such as Lucas, Kuyt, Kyrgiatos, et cetera… they may not have the best abilities or skills, but their heart are for LFC! Let’s stop negativity toward them, even-though they might and would make mistakes in the futures, as long as they gave their dedication to the club! Enough idolizing star players, lets support loyal players!

  33. yes i read what the feller who used to play for us said but he then made a liar out of himself by then doing what he said he woudnt do !. i hope chelsea draw man u and knock them out of europe and then get knocked out themselves.

  34. Of all the 4 great players tht hav left us(mcmanaman,Owen,xabi Alonso and torres), I was only saddened by alonso’s exit. At least he gav us his all in the season before he left. And he’d stated tht he always wanted to play for Madrid anyway.

  36. great article, couldn’t agree more especially concerning the chelsea pensioners and financia fair play. Just wanna add, a warning for nando, watch ya misses coz one day ya might come home early and find john terrys range rover in ya drive ha ha ha ha

  37. Now if Roman Abrahamovic is planning on selling Chelsea, then it makes perfect sense to temporarily boost the value of the club by buying the ‘Scab’, which then leaves the headache of honouring his £150k/week contract to the new owners…

  38. Julian, that is THE beat written piece I have seen regarding torres’ transfer and have completely captured how we, the fans, are all feeling. Betrayed, disappointed and totally let down. The man has not one ounce of loyalty, as I am assure Chelsea and their fans will eventually discover too. Personally, I look forward to an exciting second half of the season, watching King Kenny AND the lads repair the damage done by the previous administration. YNWA

  39. Thanks, this is so perfect!
All I can say is we wouldn´t feel this way if we hadn´t loved him so much!

  40. Puto falso maricon de Chelsea. In other words 2-faced Chelsea Rent Boy. I used to love you Nando. Now go, walk out the door, your not welcome any more. WE WILL SURVIVE

  41. Spot on mate.

If he had given his all for Kenny until the end of the season, and asked for a move, we would have had to say fair is fair. If he wanted to leave in the summer when he would have more options, we could of possibly gotten more money, and

No class. So he will fit in perfectly at Chelsea with the other hired guns, and him and Terry can chat about what it’s like to screw people over.

  42. Oh my word.. you people need to wake up and smell the coffee.. seriously… Torres was lied to, promises were never kept and i go on and on and on.. get over it.. the boy has left leave him alone!

you all complained about him for 18 months i have been defending and well the truth is out he was not happy.. he does not owe anyone anything!

open up ur blinkers and get over it!
i am his biggest follower and i will continue to follow the more u slate the more i will stand up for him, walk beside him and well test my allegiance and i can do it!

i am tired of hearing traitor etc etc..
maybe find the out the real truth first before you all mouth!

no one knows what happened, lfc are not telling and it will take a long time for me to forgive lfc for letting him go!

chelsea played lfc’s bluff – it was in his contract so get over it! did liverpool fight for him? roman came up with the money and were there negotiations was there begging and pleading for the player to stay? NO!! If anyone is to blame its LFC!!!! GET OVER IT NOW I HAVE! LEAVE HIM ALONE HE HAS A DREAM TO FULFIL AND SO BE IT!

  43. Torres is a traitor in August he said he falling in love with Liverpool and the city and in January he said what to move to a bigger club Chelsea is not a bigger club how many goal has he score!! You’ll never walk alone Suarez
