The number 19

By Johann Gerber

I am probably going to get flamed and burnt at the stake for writing this, but I think it is time. Time for what? Time for a team to overtake Liverpool as the most successful English club. We have won 18 League Titles, yet not a single Premier league title.

Manchester United, arch rivals, fierce enemies, and to many the scum of the earth are very much in with a chance to overtake Liverpool this season. Is this a bad thing?

I am writing this piece about 30 minutes before kick off between United and Chelsea. The last couple of days I have been following people the world over and considering their opinion on the upcoming match. The consensus is that no matter what the scum must lose. Or the alternative, a draw.

Okay, great, but what is best for Liverpool Football Club? Our club is in a funny position. We are in 6th place on the log; 6 points behind Chelsea and 8 points behind Spurs. Furthermore, there are two teams only 2 points behind us on the table! This weekend we play United and we could see our team drop from 6th to 8th on the League table…even 9th…so, I ask again, what is best for Liverpool FC?

Records are meant to be broken. It is something for clubs to aspire to. Liverpool FC set the bar – 18 titles. It was an unthinkable achievement. A great achievement. However, the most successful club of the last 20 years has the opportunity to eclipse that. Is that a bad thing? I am glad Man City didn’t achieve it, that would have been fabricated…Arsenal…Arsenal would have been worthy, but so is Man UTD.

All hate aside, they deserve it if they achieve it. What does Liverpool FC deserve? Well certainly better than 6th on the table? We are a Top Four team – end of story. We deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as United, Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Bayern, yet we are being omitted at the moment.
This can change. It can change as soon as May – the greatest comeback in modern football history; 18th to 5th, hell even 4th (maybe 6th) in 5 months! How the King returned glory to Merseyside.

So what do I want from tonight’s game? A United win please! It will give us a chance to edge closer to the top of the table. Forget specifics – closer to the top. And the TOP of the table is good for Liverpool FC.

Will it hurt if the record is eclipsed? Yes! But it will feel so good when we move the bar higher when we pass the new record. And start to dominate the football world and strike fear in players and coaches worldwide.

And as we are jubilant in victory I ask you to be humble in defeat and concede that perhaps getting rid of the “We have won 18 league titles”, ‘We are the most successful English club’ tags might be the best thing to happen to Liverpool FC.

Now, let’s go kick the knees off the United team this coming Sunday and start edging to the top of the table! A win for United tonight and a win for us on the weekend will leave us just3 points behind Chelsea and 5th…5 from the TOP. You Will Never Walk Alone
