Can we do without European football?

Posted by

Okay guys, so permit me to revisit last Sunday’s game in a quick flash-back while not trying to be either boring or repetitive. Yesterday’s game between Chelsea and Man Utd showed why we should have taken Sunday’s game more seriously, because let’s be honest, it did not look like a very convinced attempt to inflict serious damage to West Ham. Many of our friends on here somehow expected Utd to trash Chelsea, and I had said I would be happy with a draw at Stamford Bridge, for which I got a lot of flak with many calling me a Man Utd hater. With Chelsea winning (and I did say in my comments that for me this was a very big possibility), things for us become much more complicated.

Many of you here have claimed that an attempt to land 4th spot was unrealistic and never a possibility after such a disastrous start to the season, and last Sunday’s shabby performance and subsequent loss helped consolidate that train of thought. The consequences here are deeper than one may imagine. We know that the following year’s TV rights bonanza are distributed according the where you finish in the PL. We now know that with Birmingham City winning the League Cup there is on berth less available for next season’s Europa League, and I was reading somewhere that unless the FA Cup is won by one of the teams finishing in the top four, there is a strong possibility that the team finishing 5th will be the final one eligible to play Europa League football next season.

So now we find ourselves in this predicament: if we don’t win the Europa League and/or finish at least 5th there is a good chance that we won’t even be in Europe next season! I did get this right, no? If this is the case I feel the need to create controversy with those of you that after last Sunday’s game said ‘Well, everyone can have a bad game!’ Agreed! But you know what, not everyone can afford to, and Liverpool FC at this moment in time does not afford such luxury.

So, and this is the question I wish you all to answer: If we fail to make European football next season given the situation as it presents itself now, will Liverpool Football Club still remain an attractive prospect for the flurry of wonderful talent that is linked to the Reds each and every day and with more intensity as the season comes to a close?

  1. Yes, players wanting to come to Liverpool( the type of players i think LFC want) dont come wanting to play in the Europa league anyway. Any player coming will do so with the clubs future in mind. To be honest aside from the financial losses i don’t think a season out of Europe will do the club that much harm, maybe it will help

  2. @ Ryan. The financial aspect is very important here, both with regards to monies coming in from UEFA as well as gate sales. That was just a point with regards to finance. I do not agree that a season out of Europe won’t do harm, most certainly it will not do any good both for the aspects already mentioned as well as for prestige. The players coming want to play both PL as well as European football…..but that’s my view of course. Even going out of the League Cup at an early stage has a financial bearing on a Club. We need to be strong enough to be competitive in all competitions.

  3. Will our club survive without playing in Europe? Absolutely. Will it be a tougher sell to premier players in Europe to come to Anfield without playing in Europe? Also a yes. In the age we live in, players want to make sure their profile is at its highest that it can possibly be. There is no better way of doing that than (on the club level) participating in Champions League and at the very least Europa. These games are broadcast all over the world and seen by millions.

Secondly, its a pride thing. There is a global following of LFC and that did not come to pass on the strength of the 18 titles but on the weight of the 5 European wins. If you look at who has won the European Cup/Champions League, the majority has an increased profile worldwide (e.g. Real Madrid, Barca, Bayern Munich, Ac Milan, Red Star Belgrade (JK)). A team attracts new fans by appearing at these larger tournaments so at the very least to even appear in Europa league may not be a detriment to the team in the present, it might have an impact in the future.

  4. The only competition Liverpool should concentrate on next season is the Premier League with or without Europa League football. 38 games from August to May should be taken very serious. If the likes of Gerrard,Carragher,Reina and Kuyt leave in the summer that would be a blessing.

  5. Kenny every story has a post with u saying gerrard carra kuyt & reina need to go in the summer, change the record mate it’s boring. Would we get much money for carra? No, he’s better finishing his career with the club then going into a coaching roll with a view to managing us in the future, back to the bootroom, the way it worked when we were at our best. Kuyt’s not a world beater but he has qualities every team needs, he grafts, he’ll fill in more than 1 position & while he may not get into the team as much once we start to strengthen the squad I’d definately have him as an experienced squad player. Reina is one of the best keeper’s in the world, don’t know where u get off calling him after 1 bad game against west ham. He’s been our most consistent player for years & it’s no suprise the likes of man u & arsenal are sniffing round him, he’s one of the best there is & to be honest the fact that you’re slagging him off makes me think you’re either a man u or an arsenal fan just trying to stir up a bit of sh*t. who do we replace reina with if he goes? cos we’re not getting casillas & to be honest anyone else would be a backwards step. the only player worth considering losing is Gerrard & only if we get a decent amount of money to buy someone younger & with the quality to turn into a top player.

  6. In response to mountaingoat, Kuyt’s game is all about scurrying around the pitch. He is 30 now and his legs won’t co-operate much longer. Carragher is too weak in the air at centreback. Ferguson got rid of the sacred cows like McGrath and Whiteside at the start. If I am boring you mountaingoat, that is your problem. This sacred cow mentality from fans like you is a major reason why this club has not won a league since 1990.

  7. Stekenlenberg from Holland would be a suitable replacement for Reina. Were you impressed with the worldclass goalie Reina who decided not to wear a cap in the secondhalf playing into the sun at home to Arsenal?. Were you impressed with his impression of a statue against Utd in the 3-2 defeat? Were you impressed with the ball he palmed out to Rodallega away to Wigan? Were you impressed with him staying on his line and allowing Gohouri to score for Wigan at Anfield? It was Reina and his agent who approached Utd and Arsenal not the other way around. A certain 50 million pound striker was Reina’s nextdoor neighbour and we all know how committed he was this season to Liverpool?

  8. This flurry of so called wonderful talent you mention wouldn’t happen to be all the nobody’s from weaker leagues that have won nothing worth mentioning or cant speak a word of English or haven’t ever kicked a ball in the English Game that are being linked to us daily in the tabloids would they ?

    Oh they are ?

    I thought as much .

Fact is Loserpool will attract 2’nd rate players of that standard because we pay big wages & their exposure as players improves , for example we have nobody’s like Renia , Skrtel & Agger swanning around like superstars that have won everything in the game when in fact they are gutless pansy’s only going through the motions for the money .

We need a bedrock of players proven in the league & sadly the only players that are British & have proven themselves capable of doing a job for us happen to be English & we all know that 11 Englanders cant play well together in a team .

So we are damned if we do & damned if we dont ,Lightweight foreign nobody’s or proven players who cant play well together .

So to answer your question , as long as we pay big wages we will always attract cheap nobodys no matter what competitions we are or aren’t in .

  9. @ IAS. Is Luis Suarez another nobody? Amongst the flurry of talent which not I, but the international media is mentioning there are also some players already playing the PL and which do speak english. We need players that speak with their feet not with their mouth!
And btw…the flurry of talent being mentioned and linked with Liverpool are also being chased bu Europe’s elite and in many cases by those teams that are currently ahead of us in the PL.
No use being so negative pal, try to be a bit more objective if it’s not big effort for you.

  10. @IAS. Btw…to further ‘strenghten’ your argument. The is a team of 11 englishmen that speak only english and as far as we all no it’s not that that have been winning World and European Cups….or even getting close for that matter.
As I said, its not the mouth, its the talent and the legs that do the talking.

  11. Luis Saurez was & is a massively expensive risk to sign mid season after making our worst start in 50 years . It only proves our desperation & the weakness of the British game & I’ll remind you we let two senior players go from an already 5 man light squad in that window too .

You mention him like he is turning results on their head , winning games for us single handed when in fact he has hit one in 3 appearances & the two full games he has played were a dismal draw at home to a bottom 3 side & a pathetic defeat away to a bottom 3 side .

Maybe in your computer games players dont need to communicate in the same language but in the real world they do & they also need to be physically able for the league & not just barely able .

To a foreigner things may look fantastic but those of us on the ground that know better know we are being ripped off & being sold down the river for the sake of corporate profit & political correctness .

  12. Why are you repeating what I said about 11 Englishmen not being able to play well together like you are proving a point ?

  13. @ IAS. I never said he was turning games mate, I asked if he was a second rate player for you? Secondly, I don’t know if you play computer games: I don’t!
May I also remind you that in the last two decades has made a name for himself with just english players, and the same can be said for all the other european greats including AC Milan, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern.
Did you know that Inter won the CL last year without fielding an italian player in the final rounds of the competition. Not even one!
This is today’s football pal. You can’t do without bringing in foreign players because that is the trend for everyone, and Liverpool cannot be the exception.

  14. @ IAS. In the end, I too think we should weight our player purchases carefully. I think that both Houllier and Benitez made huge mistakes in bringing players to Liverpool. In both cases I think the players of a certain quality they brought in can be counted on one hand. Even Hodgson made mistakes in his brief spell with Konchesky and Poulsen, and then sending Aquilani to Italy. But alas, when they are Boss, they decide.
Hopefully Kenny will change this high turnover of non quality players trend and bring in the right people for the cause.

  15. Who is Saurez ?

    What has Saurez won ?

What has he won in England ?

What has he even done in England ?

He has played two full games against bottom 3 sides & failed to score in both .

You are asking me to make a judgment on a player I personally would never have signed in a January transfer window unless we were top of the League .

I wont judge him because it isnt his fault he arrived in these circumstances but in relation to the stature of the club he is a nobody based on his medal collection .

I admit he looks a fine prospect now he is with us but we should never have risked £23 million on a player that cant speak the language , has never played in the league & had to arrive in the middle of a season we made our worst start to in 50 years .

What Inter or anyone else has done is of no concern to me & its clear you are eager to see no domestic players at our club or follow the example of a club that isnt us so I can see no point replying to you from here on out when its clear you are pushing a hidden agenda & are ignoring the facts involved in the circumstance.

  16. We absolutely must get qualification for the champions league. It is the biggest trophy to win in club football. Yes I want to see us win the league as well, but to win the champions league is the main object-its why we should have kept Benitez.
The economic aspects all follow. More money to buy better players and we are then able to buy the likes of Alonso,Mascherano and Torres. Even when we were dominant under Paisley and Dalglish -the team had many Scots-Irish and Welsh players. Those nations have stopped producing large numbers of quality players.
I do not just want to see Liverpool win I want to see world class players playing quality football whether they be from Wales or Chile. Remember when we smashed Real Madrid and Man U in one week ?

  17. Alfie the reason Wales aren’t producing world class players anymore is because they are being prevented from doing so at youth level by clubs like Arsenal who prefer to bring in foreign kids who at best are no better & in reality are worse . I point you in the direction of John Hartson & then point you in the direction or Bentnar , I know which I would want in my team & I kno they both came through the same clubs youth system therefore its not that Wales cant produce players its that they are being prevented from doing so because they aren’t fashionable or dont fit in with this trend we must follow accordingly to Tonio Bones .

  18. @ IAS. I mentioned Inter because that example shoots down your theory hands down. Inter show that football is won with talent on the field and on the bench. I repeat, Inter won the domestic league, cup and champions league with a team of 11 foreigners!
Suarez will learn the language, you dont have to worry about that. Do you speak anything apart from english?? He will do what hundreds of players that came to the PL have done before him. The financial risk is always their, whether the player was born in Montevideo or in St.Helens.
On a final note I await a list of players that you realistically see wearing the Liverpool shirt to make the team more British. Let me know what honours these have won both domestically and internationally I am always open to learning.

  19. Tonio Bone ,

I am not British & at no time did I call for a British or English team , you either have trouble reading plain English or are trying to twist this into an argument to suit your flawed opinion that Liverpool needs foreign players .

Like I said before what Inter does is nothing to me , if they won a this that or the other with players that cant speak the same language & have only just arrived from a smaller club in a weaker league then fair play to them , although I find that hard to believe seeing as they were already domestic champions many seasons running before winning the Champions League something Liverpool haven’t won in over 20 years of buying lightweight second rate foreigners .

So how or why you are comparing us to a multiple domestic league winning side in Italy who won the Champions League when we haven’t won a domestic league in over 20 years is suspicious to say the least .

We need players proven in the league & we don’t need nobody’s that have won nothing of note , that have never played in the Premier League & need the club to give themselves a public image .

We have had 20 years of that shit & all we have to show for it is the dismal “Loserpool” circumstances we are in .

  20. I believe my article says ‘flurry of wonderful talent’ and I did not specify whether these were english or foreign. I one reads the articles I posted during the time Hodgson was appointed I was the one on here promoting english talent!!!!
The point of the article was whether the Club could attract talent, given and granted that the squad needs and overhaul, either domestic or foreign, to come to Liverpool knowing there would be no european football to play, at least in their first season. No more, no less.

  21. We simply cannot do without European football. We all saw the drastic effect after we were banned from Europe for five years after Haysel. Furthermore football is now a commodity, if the owners do not get the return the fans will pay the price yet again. Traders & bookies seldom lose out.

  22. Liverpool will always be a club most players want to play for..here i can read some comments and from what i’ve read these people aint Liverpool fans,in my opinion..Sell Carra??Sell Gerrard??those two players are the heart of the team.even if you sold them(which 1st of all is disrespect to 2 of the greatest players that have played for this club) you wouldnt get great money..these players wouldnt give a s**t playing for other teams, but will give their 100% for Liverpool as they are born and bred Liverpool fans..i wouldnt sell Kuyt either and for me he is one of the most underrated players in modern football, the man is a myth,he’s still running and running all the time, and Reina doesnt want to leave.he respects Kenny, hurts him that we aint got Xabi,Torres no more as they were the spanish legacy for Liverpool, but it is a privilege for him to have been a Liverpool captain, mark my words,a LIVERPOOL captain..we are one of the greatest club in the world, and people would always love to play for Liverpool.and if you want straight examples,Luis Suarez.lets hope that a top five club wins the fa cup otherwise we gotta win the europa league(which aint impossible).we’ll be at europa league next season but talented players will be bought for the future.with the current Liverpool stats,Liverpool can attract players easily.we got new owners,we got a great manager and some great other staff like Comolli and Clark.some players would also love to play next to Gerrard and Suarez, dont get me wrong.left back, wingers, squad players.come summer.
    Reina
    Johnson Carragher Agger Baines

    Suarez Carroll

Bench:Adam,Mertesacker,Elia,Kuyt,Kelly,J.Cole,..and some more…Against United, lets get behind Kenny and players again..they need our support and we can give it to them..we are LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB and Anfield will always be a place for other teams to be afraid to go..YNWA

  23. Indeed, you are right, unfortunately, our squad is weak, low on creativity, getting some injuries and there ain’t much we can do about it. West Ham recently signed Ba and Hitzlsperger, both good players, Parker is a player we were looking at ourselves at one stage, it was only a matter of time before West Ham showed some form, plus they were at home. We signed one fit striker, and astonishingly for a club with not a lot of width, let Babel (who could have developed under Dalglish, given an umpteenth chance) go and didn’t bring in any wingers.

We lost two of our form players in the game and only brought on Ngog and Cole, both needing form and/or games. Between Cole or Maxi, who has more to prove?

How much more seriously could we have taken it?

  24. the other guy says that we shouldnt have bought Suarez…ok some people here smoke weed, that’s for sure!!Suarez has top class talent mate!!in 3 games(in his first 3 in england)he’s already had a goal,an assist, two shots hitting the crossbar, amazing dribbles/skills.we know that the premierleague is the hardest in the world, but he’s already shown us great talent.if you cant support your club but keep on criticising it,you can go and support any club rules right now,Barca for example..but i will be a Liverpool fan for ever and even in dark times.right now i have 100% belief and some people must realise that last summer we had sold mascherano, had Gillet and Hicks still at anfield and barely kept Fernando Torres at Liverpool..right now:new owners, new manager, new staff,2 new players and 6 or 7 expected to come at summer..YNWA

  25. Look Tonio , I was replying to your post not your career as a writer .

You have been posting repeatedly about stuff I have never said .

In my opening post I stated that if this flurry of so called talent you refer to are the same unknown players , who have won nothing of note , never played for a club even close to being as big as us in terms of pressure & expectation , never played in England , never played in the Premier league , Cant even speak the Language , have no affection for the culture of England , who are being linked to us in the tabloids then the answer is yes .

Yes Liverpool will always attract players of that caliber because we pay big wages & 2’nd rate players like that need our club to raise their profile as a player .

Does Liverpool need players of that caliber ?

If we want to maintain our current decline then yes we need players like that .

If we want to reverse our decline & challenge for a league title then we need players of a higher caliber & players of the caliber required are unlikely to join us in our current state therefore we need players proven in the league & the majority of those players are British & the majority of those British players are English .

That & those are the facts of our circumstances & if that or those dont fit in with your delusional ideas about having a team of foreigners then you have my sympathy for your mental condition .

  26. Steve ,

You think its wise after changing owners mid season , then changing manager in the middle of the season that has seen us make our worst start in 50 years using a squad of 20 against our rivals squads of 25 to let two senior players leave , both forwards & one of them our top scorer then spend £23 million on a player who cant speak English ,had never set foot in England , let alone played in the premier League all in the middle of the season when we were two points abouv the relegation zone ?

If you think that is wise then its clearly you on tha weed .

A risk on a player like Suarez should only be taken when we are building on success once the season has been completed , not in the middle of the season in desperation , putting so much pressure on him its going to be almost impossible for him to succeed .

If you cant see that then you are a brain dead idiot & you should keep on smoking weed .

    1. You are so mysterious it’s enticing. I did give u my e-mail….and I did try to e-mail on yours….but came back. To answer your question I’d need you to be more specific.

  27. Steve’s lineup has no defensive midfielder. Kuyt runs and runs but where is the end product? Carragher was an Everton fan as a child. Steve says selling Gerrard and Carragher would be disrespectful (up to what age does he think the manager should keep picking them? Maybe 40, Maybe 45?) These 2, Kuyt and Reina are costing the club 450 grand a week in wages. Steve, how many Premier League goals has Kuyt scored this season? Hyppia was a better defender than Carragher, did you think it disrespectful that the club got rid of him?

  28. @ISA & @tonio bone u guys r classic better than eastenders any day but I’ve gotta go with ISA I don’t argee with everything u said but I like your approach I just don’t know y we never went & got nzobia in jan

    1. @ LFC4life. Well, I don’t expect everyone to agree with this or that idea its only natural. I think we were both saying more or less the same thing but it’s just that we got into an online argument and we both wanted to press in with our thoughts. I don’t know what to say about N’Zogbia, but there seems to be interest from the Reds and he could well be approached in the summer.

  29. Kenny – Thanks but I already know what Kuyt’s game is about. Calling it scurrying around on the pitch is a bit insulting. Someone who closes down defenders, works hard, gets forward, tracks back & has a knack of scoring important goals is well worth having. Again I’m not saying he should be in the team every week, but with a squad as short as ours he’s a decent enough squad player with plenty of experience to help any younger kids who come in. At 30 his legs aren’t yet showing any signs of packing in & until they do then he’s alright in my book. I don’t have a sacred cow mentality & to suggest that I just think we should keep Carra cos he’s Carra is ridiculous. He proved against Chelsea that he’s got still got what it takes to mix it with the best, yes he’s coming to the end of his career & I’m not disputing that we should be bringing in replacements but getting rid of him all together achieves nothing. You need a mixture of youth & experience & he’s been in our backline for over a decade, he organizes our backline & there’s nobody better in our squad for the likes of martin Kelly & danny Wilson to learn their trade from.
Well done, you’ve pulled out a handful of mistakes that our keeper’s made that stretch back 6 & a half months to the home game against Arsenal. How about the fact that during a rare drop of form, which he admits himself our keeper’s still managed to concede only 1 goal in the 7 games before west ham. How about instead of just picking out the bits from your stato book that fit your agenda trying & take a more balanced view & realize that he’s our best keeper since Ray Clemence, who incidentally played in a much better side & Reina is still breaking his records today. U know that him & his agent approached Man u & Arsenal do u? How? Did you read it in a paper somewhere? Must be true then of course, papers never lie ha. So what if Torres was his next door neighbour, it means nothing. Are u everything your next door neighbour is? If your next door neighbour turns out to be a tranny does that make you one too?

Irish Alan’s equally as clueless by the way. Here’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen written on this site:

    1. Who is Saurez ?
    2. What has Saurez won ?
    3. What has he won in England ?
    4. What has he even done in England ?

Why bother asking what a player has done in England when you know fine well he’s only just come to England? By your reckoning should no club buy players who answered nothing to the last 3 questions? So Arsenal shouldn’t have signed Henry, the mancs shouldn’t have signed Ronaldo & we shouldn’t have signed Torres then. You ignore too much to have any credibility.

We’ve had a rough few years recently but if there’s 1 person whose judgement I trust more than anyone in the world over what’s best for Liverpool then it’s the judgement of the best servant this club has ever had. Our greatest ever player, our current manager & the man more qualified than any of you to say who we need to buy & who gets in our team.

    Rant over, YNWA

Oh yeah & Kenny yes Carra was an Everton fan as a child, apparently so whas Fowler, they’re both die hard reds now & always will be so what’s your point?

  30. Kuyt is just like Emille Heskey as he tries to disguise his failure to score a decent amount of goals in running around aimlessly. Carragher played against Chelsea with the adrenalin some players get coming back from injury but his real form this season was seen in his rubbish performances against Wigan and West Ham. You said Carragher was born a Liverpool fan. Where did I mention Fowler? Compare Spurs current goals for and against in the Premier League and points total with Liverpool’s and you will see the damage boozed up Reina has caused this season denying Liverpool Champions League football once again next season. You also failed to answer once again how Man Utd and Arsenal found out about the 20 million buyout clause in Reina’s contract?

  31. In response to Mountaingoat, Carragher’s performance against Chelsea was not repeated against Wigan and West Ham, was it. Kuyt is a dutch version of Emille Heskey, he tries to disguise his inability to score a decent amount of goals by running around aimlessly. Reina has been poor all season, he admitted it himself but yet you want to keep a guy still boozed up since the World Cup final, you talk about stats and records but ignore the fact that thanks to his poor form this season (which he admitted) this club will miss out again on Champions League football. Compare Spurs goals for and against in the league at this point in time with Liverpool’s and their points total at the moment and you will see the damage Reina has caused. Once more you failed to answer how Man Utd and Arsenal would have found out about the 20 million buyout clause in Reina’s contract? You said Carragher was born a Liverpool fan in your first post? Where did I mention Fowler, you bought him into the picture

  32. Reina didn’t admit he was poor all season he admitted he was poor against west ham. The reason we’re not getting Champions league football next year isn’t his fault it’s Roy Hodgeson’s. Dalglish has come in & used the same squad & made us look twice the team we looked before. Release clauses in players contracts are pretty much common knowlege, it doesn’t mean the player himself has approached anyone asking them to buy him, & just because u think that’s what happened doesn’t make it true. quote the line where I said Carra was born a liverpool fan cos it’s not there, i’ll make it easy for u shall I, my 1st post in full:

Did u find it? didn’t think so, & i mentioned Fowler to stress the point that it doesn’t matter who u supported as a kid u can still go on to be a legend at another club. Don’t even need to mention Kuyt after today do I?

  33. Mountaingoat: Who conceded the 8 goals in the games against Blackpool,Everton,Wigan and West Ham in the 4 games since Dalglish took over, answer Reina (10 points dropped) means Liverpool are nowhere in 6th place instead of a clear 3rd place. Were you impressed with Reina’s brilliant positioning for Hernandez’s goal? I thought Reina has been in goal all season, but yet you are implying it was Hodgson in the first 20 games. Carragher can’t head the ball which any decent centrehalf in the Premiership has to be able to do. Him and Skyrtel as a centreback partnership is a disaster. Gerrard was anonymous today and was really impressive the way he mistimed his jump before Hernandez headed in. Kuyt admitted after the game that him and the team have been poor against the other 14 teams outside the top 5 this season. His efforts today were due to the lucrative new contract he is close to conning the club into giving him, watch once he gets it how invisible he becomes in each game.

  34. A team concedes a goal, not just the keeper, just like a team scores a goal, not just the finisher. Roy Hodgeson’s small club mentality & negative tactics, playing like fulham rather than playing to our strengths were the reason we did so badly at the start of the season & anyone who can’t see that knows nothing about this club. You are officially too stupid for me to continue speaking to, you can’t even spell skrtel

  35. So Mountaingoat, what about the 8 goals and 10 points dropped against Blackpool,Everton,Wigan and West Ham, Liverpool would be in 3rd now. Great goalkeeping by Reina yesterday to let in Hernandez goal. You said Reina only said he was poor against West Ham, however look at the Daily Mail story on the 3rd March on this page of NewsNow.
