Can we do without European football?

Okay guys, so permit me to revisit last Sunday’s game in a quick flash-back while not trying to be either boring or repetitive. Yesterday’s game between Chelsea and Man Utd showed why we should have taken Sunday’s game more seriously, because let’s be honest, it did not look like a very convinced attempt to inflict serious damage to West Ham. Many of our friends on here somehow expected Utd to trash Chelsea, and I had said I would be happy with a draw at Stamford Bridge, for which I got a lot of flak with many calling me a Man Utd hater. With Chelsea winning (and I did say in my comments that for me this was a very big possibility), things for us become much more complicated.

Many of you here have claimed that an attempt to land 4th spot was unrealistic and never a possibility after such a disastrous start to the season, and last Sunday’s shabby performance and subsequent loss helped consolidate that train of thought. The consequences here are deeper than one may imagine. We know that the following year’s TV rights bonanza are distributed according the where you finish in the PL. We now know that with Birmingham City winning the League Cup there is on berth less available for next season’s Europa League, and I was reading somewhere that unless the FA Cup is won by one of the teams finishing in the top four, there is a strong possibility that the team finishing 5th will be the final one eligible to play Europa League football next season.

So now we find ourselves in this predicament: if we don’t win the Europa League and/or finish at least 5th there is a good chance that we won’t even be in Europe next season! I did get this right, no? If this is the case I feel the need to create controversy with those of you that after last Sunday’s game said ‘Well, everyone can have a bad game!’ Agreed! But you know what, not everyone can afford to, and Liverpool FC at this moment in time does not afford such luxury.

So, and this is the question I wish you all to answer: If we fail to make European football next season given the situation as it presents itself now, will Liverpool Football Club still remain an attractive prospect for the flurry of wonderful talent that is linked to the Reds each and every day and with more intensity as the season comes to a close?
