Thoughts on the Pepe Reina article

By Matthew Pace

Just saw this piece of interview tonight and actually couldn’t sleep because of it. I tried not to say anything but if anyone cares (which I don’t think so ) I’d like to share my honest views (like Pepe’s about the club) on the interview.

1) The timing of the interview is horrible. We got our a game against our biggest rival in two days and our goalkeeper which is so loved from us fans is not even ruling out going to them ( Please just don’t want to mention them by name you know who I’m referring to) which would be far worst then what Torres did in my opinion. So we got this game coming and he’s just opened a path for our opponents for the summer to come for him by putting himself in the window. It would have been better to concentrate on playing against them and just say you’re not sure you’d be at the club next season and fairly enough almost every fan would have accepted that.

2) The Spanish influence. Well yes, as he said most of our Spanish influence at the club has gone. If I’m not mistaking at the end of the interview he said that his place is not back in Spain but in England. What is this drama about the Spanish influence? What kind of Spanish influence does that team we’re playing against on Sunday have? What kind of Spanish influence do Arsenal have? Fabregas?! Which Pepe Reina himself promoted in the summer that as he said ‘EL FUTURO D’ ESPANA, EL FUTURO DEL BARCA’ (FUTURE OF SPAIN, FUTURE OF BARCA) on the World Cup party stage in Spain. So he himself knows that Fabregas is not going to stay at Arsenal. Almunia? Please don’t wanna even talk about him as if he wants to go to Arsenal because Almunia is Spanish then I don’t know what’s left on earth that would surprise me. Chelsea? Oh right now there’s Torres so I can accept that there can be a Spanish influence. But do Chelsea want him instead of Cech? Maybe an option can be Bolton as there is Xabi’s brother, it would be acceptable.

3) The backbone of a successful team are Mascherano, Torres, Alonso all gone? Right. I can agree with that. Apart from Xabi’s case which he left like a true gentleman, what was the reason from the other two apart from greed?! Mascherano did everything he can to leave to go to the most powerful team (at present in my opinion) to warm the bench and he has been linked with a summer switch already, but at least he can say he played (or was benched) at Barcelona, do you really think he actually did the right decision Mr. Reina? Torres? OK, some of us called him a mercenary which is a hard word to take I can understand that. But there are loads of teams in world football who would gladly had Torres on their ranks. Is Chelsea a big club? Sorry but no. I would even dare to say before Roman Abramovich’s money came along, I doubt many people knew about them. Are Chelsea better then us at the moment? Well, honestly I taught so, but looking at displays lately apart from that one off they had against THAT team, I don’t think we’re miles apart from Chelsea either. What am I saying? Torres was already a GREAT player at Atletico Madrid, but he was not A LETHAL WORLD CLASS FINISHER before he came to Liverpool. People worshiped him even making photos of him and King Kenny besides each other and that says a lot. Liverpool made him a WORLD CLASS PLAYER and all I pretended, as a fan which worshiped him, was that if he took a decision to stay in the summer, I at least pretended that he sees out the remainder of the season, see where we finish, and then give a judgment on whether he leaves or not. And Chelsea one of our main rivals? Give a little respect back to the club which helped you develop in what you are today. In the summer with the new Fifa Financial Fair Play Rules, it wouldn’t have been so hard for other clubs to buy him and he would have had loads more options that just Chelsea and I’m sure the club wouldn’t have made him hard for him to leave after what he gave us and even supporters would have accepted it. But calling Chelsea the light from the dark is a bit of a drama to me sorry.

4) Ambitions to win. I’m absolutely 100% with Mr. Reina on that one. If you don’t win in football, you’re no one. That’s a fact. It’s been sometime now from our last trophy. It’s still early days yes, but he also mentioned apart from everything else he has to see that the owners are ambitious. Didn’t the owners show ambition Mr. Reina? They sold an out of form Torres for 50million. Did they really want to sell Torres? They accepted it was far beyond them when your friend Torres PUT IN A TRANSFER REQUEST AFTER A BID HAD BEEN REJECTED if I’m not mistaking. So is it really down to ambition? If it was ambition and competitiveness you are seeking, I think the owners showed that by shelling out 35million on Andy Carroll and 22.5 million on Luis Suarez on the last day of a JANUARY transfer window. I wonder only one thing, why in an entire interview did not Mr. Reina praise or even showing hid disapproval at the two signings our owners made in January? Is it really ambition what matters? Or is it just an excuse to make you look a bit better in the eyes of many Liverpool fans which already have accepted you are leaving? Because in my opinion, getting 1 player which was on fire for 3 years and with few injuries, and getting one of England’s best young talents and already firing on his first year in the Premier League and creating big controversy on the amount paid for him in their first transfer window… Was that not ambitious enough?! Is Andy Carroll worth 35million? They didn’t care. They paid the fee. End of story. Quite ambitious to me. So apart from accepting the financial crises which Mr. Reina mentioned, the money they got from Mr. Torres which I point out again that they where FORCED to take that money, they didn’t care about the fees they had to pay for players which the Liverpool staff felt are necessary. So I really don’t think it’s about ambition as I think if it was about that in the interview Mr. Reina should have mentioned our January transfers. So please stop playing buddies because Torres was your friend and be honest on the matter. There are enough soap opera’s on the telly.

5) I’m 100% only on this one with Mr. Reina. Kenny Dalglish said no one is bigger then the club. Amen. So Mr. Reina, keep that message in mind please.

  1. So you want to go, Mr. Reina? Exit door’s that way, son. Don’t let it hit your beside on the way out.

Reina’s a good keeper, but he’s not the only one. If he’s hellbent on leaving, as Judas was, fine. Let’s get a bag of cash for him, and go after someone like Guillermo Ochoa, Manuel Neuer or Igor Akinfeev. Or even, let’s give Peter Gulacsi the chance to shine. Kid’s got it in him, be sure of that. He’s brilliant.

Reina was nobody when he came to Liverpool. Liverpool have made him what he is now – whatever that be. We’ve made players from scratch countless times. We can do that again.

No name on the back of a Liverpool shirt is more important than the crest in front.

  2. It´s an interview from the last international break about a month ago, just published again in new translation to taunt you my fellow Kopite

  3. OLD NEWS…MOVE ON…THE REST OF US HAVE PUT IT ALL BEHIND US…GET A LIFE..YESTERDAYS NEWS TOMORROWS CHIP PAPER …..

  4. i totally agree , but he must not be allowed to go to old trafford in the summer ! get top dollar for him but not utd or arsenal , us liverpool fans deserve better than to have our noses rubbed in it every time we see him play (just like el judas)who ever doesnt want to be or spill blood for our beloved club then good riddance and good bye ! sell him for £25 million plus and get shay given and lets get back to the days when players were proud to don the famous red shirt !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Err.. not to point out grammatical errors… but methinks taughts should be thoughts, no???
And the owners didn’t spend 35 m on Carroll, agreed they spent on Suarez, cos that deal was done before the sale of Torres, but Carrol’s fee came from the Torres deal, so technically they didn’t spend it out of their own pockets.
Now cutting across these minor details, while I agree the timing was horrible, I wouldn’t be surprised if Reina left. Every regime has a certain style of functioning, maybe Rafa’s regime made him feel that, with Spaniards n all.
However, the disappointing thing would be if we showed concrete signs of improvement till the end of the season now, and the owners shoe enough ambition by providing money for proven and exciting talent, and still Pepe left!!!

  6. It’s spelt “THOUGHTS” not “taughts”. Sheesh. Use a dictionary before you publish, you’re just embarrassing yourself.

  7. Cheers for providing this article, I have to say that I almost completely agree with you on the five points you gave (minus Chelsea not being a big club). The timing of the Reina interview leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion and it is just downright disrespectful to the club, the fans, the manager and the owners as he has more or less told everyone “your efforts aren’t good enough.”

Reina leaving us is a point for concern, whilst he hasn’t been the same spectacular keeper this season that once ousted Jerzy Dudek from the starting 11 he is still one of the best Goalkeepers in the league and he probably would be Spain’s number one if Ike wasn’t around. However, the problem LFC are facing at the moment is that there seems to be no way in hell that the club are going to be able to keep hold of him in the summer as he is clearly showing the same signs that Torres and Masch did shortly before they jumped ship, he seems totally disinterested and intent on trying to come up with half baked reasons as to why the club are regressing rather than going forward… the Alonso sale?!? Really Reina?
That was a low point for us yes, but after the take over, the swift removal of the incompetent Hodgson, Kenny coming back, improvement in results and form plus investment in January he still questions our ambitions and desire to suceed? Do me a favour. Whilst we haven’t won a trophy in 6 seasons there are over teams around or slightly above us (Arsenal) who on paper have had “less ambition” than we do. Sure, they play CL football, might win the league, got into the Carling Cup Final and are still in the FA Cup but at the end of the day they are a club who have failed to turn their silky skills into silverware and have a manager who whilst he is a master of spotting and nurturing youth talent he refuses to shell out the big money required to take his squad from being challengers to champions. So, without the ambition to spend are Arsenal that much better than us Reina?
So, if he is not going to go to the North London side, I guess that leaves Man Utd as the only realistic destination with VDS retiring which no doubt means that the game on Sunday will have a few “errors” from Pepe as a gift to his new owners.

Reina’s want-away nature makes me sick; footballers over the years have had less and less loyalty to those that make them the stars they are (the fans) and the least someone like Reina (or Torres for that matter) could do is say that he is undecided on his future but will consider his options at a later date, to come out and more or less sell himself to our arch rivals before one of the biggest games of their season is disrespectful beyond recognition and it’s the reason why I do hope he exits in the summer so that we might once again be able to craft a team that WANT to play for one of the best teams in the world.
    FACT.

  8. I think he wants to leave just like Torres. But we should never sell him to the scum. If he puts a transfer request and there are no takers apart from the scum than he should be forced to play for the reserves and rot in there. At least Torres ruled out going to the scum Reina has not.

  9. I would not sell him to Man Utd for all the money in the world. When Liverpool wanted to buy Heinz from Man Utd…Ferguson said ‘no way to liverpool’. We can reciprocate by saying no way to Man Utd even if Reina has to watch from the stands!

  10. Hi Mathew
A precise & well reflected article striking at the heart of the matter.

Just a point, lets praise Reina as the number one keeper in the world! inflate his value & ego and sell him to the highest bidder which could include the scum bags. In my my opinion he is now a very average keeper, as I have said it before he is not a big match player. Have still not forgiven him for the own goal in the 4-4 draw at Chelsea, oh yes, what the hell was that in the last minute against Arsenal at Anfield, lets not mention the match at West Ham.
Again, lets not forget he is possibly Spain number three, who gave him the window of opportunity to be elevated to that position, oh yes LFC.
If they are not committed to our beloved they can …off, again as I have said before every man whore for himself

Come on you reds, today is where it will all begin again.
    The re-birth of KK’s empire.

    YNWA.

  11. It is sad for him to feel that way and I think his performance on the pitch is beginning to get really poor. But really, if he wants to leave, he should do so early in the summer transfer window so we can get quality replacement.
NOBODY IS BIGGER THAN THE CLUB!!!
I love this club and I won’t let some players make me sad. He can leave on time so he can watch us climb up to the top.

    YNWA!!!

  12. just so you know this interview was last month and the press just put it out now to cause a stir so to speak

  13. What a mind-boggling headline! Where were you educated? Where were you when the teacher was giving the class lessons on spelling, grammar, syntax etc? How can you ever become a decent writer if you cannot even tell the difference between “thoughts” and “taught”. Incidentally, there is no such word as “taughts”.

  14. Hi Matt. Thanks for the effort. Please do take time to check the article before publishing. Presentation is key. I am sure you will do better in the future.

  15. Let him go. Spanish are so fickle, it’s unreal. First you’ve got Torres, who said numerous of times that he loved Liverpool, the people and the place, and then moved to London.

Now Pepe Reina wants to join our main rivals? I think we should let him go, get someone in who actually wants to play in a Liverpool shirt. We all saw what happened when Torres wasn’t happy. It was as if we played every match with 10 players, he was that uninterested. We can’t have a goalkeeper who’s going to get distracted. Every success comes from the back.

Get rid of unloyal players, and get in someone who will be proud to put on their shirt every time they wear it. Someone who actually wants to fight for their success, instead of taking the easy way out and running away.

  16. Hi, we all know that he mispelled a word. Get over yourselves and grow up. Mistakes happen (There’s Reina to prove my point), and are not laughed at. They’re overcome.

  17. I no if we get rid of Reina, liverpool would be back on track wiv brand new faces brand new players ready to give their 100% to the club unlike these lot that sulks and only interested in their own selfish ways like Reina,Torress,Mascherano etc..Reina has been woeful and d sooner he become part of history the better for us.we should never sell him to Manure instead sell him to Reading, scunthorpe or Crystal palace then he’s rating would nosedive.if he is passionate for the club enough why would he ever consider Manure as his suitors, its so disgraceful and disgusting when players like Reina show such direspectul attitude,it is unacceptable to the club, fans, management staff etc

  18. Sorry for the ‘thoughts’ part I wrote the article at 4am in the morning when I was disappointed with what I saw… Infact I did excuse myself for any errors at the end :) For the Carroll fee for MR Royk I did not say they did buy from their own pocket as infact they spent only 2 million if you add up Babel’s fee, but what I wanted to point out is that they didn’t care what was the fee if over inflated or not, they just spent it.

  19. Well just bouncing an idea round here . If players can have a clause inserted in their contracts that if someone comes in with a bid of x amount they can leave ala the 20 mill runoured to be written into Reinas contract . Why cant liverpool insert a clause stating they will not be allowed to transfer to certain other named clubs . Man Utd obviously come to mind , maybe close rivals etc . There is no way alex ferguson will ever sell a player to liverpool and i expect mr moyes would be equaly consumed by eye bulging rage if we went after one of his players . I know this will probably contravene some european employment law but fergie didnt let that bother him with heinze

  20. DE GEA ALL THE WAY!!!!
We should cash in on Reina now and buy DE GEA while he is cheaper and younger. make a profit of 5Million maybe ?

  21. Give it a rest about the grammatical errors! He’s not writing to get into the next Top 10 Novels List and he’s not even English by nationality – hence the surname! Seriously!
