This week Jamie Carragher’s 23 Foundation, in association with the Hugh McAuley Football Academy, gave over 100 local children the opportunity to experience top class football training.

The children – aged between 7 and 11 – were selected by the Foundation from youth clubs throughout Merseyside to take part in the four day camp. Taking place at Crosby’s Holy Family School, the camp included a special ceremony during which Jamie presented certificates and medals to all participants in recognition of their hard-work and achievements.

The 23 Foundation, which is administered by the Community Foundation for Merseyside, is named after the centre-half’s shirt number and was set up by the Reds hero in 2009. Mainly funded by the proceeds of Jamie’s Testimonial in September 2010, the Foundation aims to help Merseyside kids make a positive contribution to society.

Speaking of the joint initiative Jamie said: “After the success of last year’s 23 Foundation camp, it’s great to be working with Hugh again.

“There are many talented youngsters out there who just don’t get the chance to develop their skills. Hugh and I wanted to give these kids the opportunity to benefit from professional coaching.”

Hugh McAuley, who coached Jamie during his early years at the club, added: “Since the first camp last year Jamie and I have been looking at continuing this initiative. It’s great to be able to give these children the chance to enjoy something they have a passion for whilst developing new skills in an inclusive, rewarding atmosphere.

“These skills are transferable into everyday life and aid social development – all of which compliments the values of the Foundation.”
