Steven Gerrard – The one who could do it all.

During the 1990-2000s era of Premier League football, there were a handful of top class midfielders- each with their own forte and a legend in their own rights.

Steven Gerrard

You had midfield generals like Roy Keane, powerful tacklers like Patrick Vieira, visionary passers like Paul Scholes and lethal goal-machines like Frank Lampard.

But there was only one player, one special player who possesses them all. His presence on the pitch would inspire his team-mates to greater heights; he could execute crucial intercepting tackles, he could spray the ball around the pitch with pinpoint accuracy and boy oh boy he could score his trademark long-range scorchers. His name is Steven George Gerrard.

Like many fans of my age, I had the privilege of watching Stevie G make his debut many years ago. Through the years, he would blossom from a talented yet rash teenager, to a mature first team player capable of taking games by the scruff of the neck through sheer power, to a mature captain who was always there when all hopes seem lost, and finally to his current status as a living legend. And it’s not just his attributes on the field, the way he conducts himself as captain of Liverpool Football Club with respect, humility and dignity is also highly commendable.

All hail the one and only Steven Gerrard- the man who could do it all.

The above mentioned players- Keane, Vieira and Scholes have retired, while Lampard is but a pale shadow of his former self (IMO even in his prime he wasn’t in the same league as Gerrard!). But our captain still stands strong. He is still the captain of one of the world’s biggest football club, still very much active in his contributions on the field playing week in and week out and showing no signs of fading away anytime soon.

All hail the one and only Steven Gerrard- the man who could do it all.
