In the previous article I have tried to show how Liverpool’s defensive midfielder responds and from the response he can change Liverpool’a approach into an attack mode.
In this article I will try to make an attempt on how Liverpool will respond to an attack.
In this scenario , the defensive midfielder need to be very proactive. He needs to anticipate the moment the opposing players convert to attack mode.
The defensive midfielder must be prepared to put his body on the line to try to stop the attack.He/she needs to always make sure that the ball does not get pass him/her.At all times , the defensive midfielder must always be ready to protect the back four defenders.
To be a good defensive midfielder.he/she have to impose himself/herself early , prepare to intercept , to win good tackles and at all cost to win back the ball for possession.
The defensive midfielder should also have the ability and skills to dribble and pass the ball to their fellow team mates.
In the first diagram , the defensive midfielder (indicated by Lucas) always sits just above the defenders.His/her main duty in this scenario is to protect the back line.
In the next 2 diagrams indicates the defensive area of responsibility of the defensive midfielder.He/she must make sure that nothing gets past him/her.
The next diagram shows how the defensive midfielder should respond when the opposing players launch an attack. ( Opponent players indicated by black lines). The defensive midfielder should always be the first to respond to any threat by intercepting the opposing players through good , clean and hard tackle. In the process , upsetting the opposing player’s movements.
Sometimes the defensive midfielder is expected to intercept through aerial challenge or through ground challenge. With some determination and good skills , the defensive midfielder is expected to put to a halt all opposing attacks before they reach the defenders.
When the whole defense response , you can always anticipate to see at least 2 liverpool defensive players responding to an opposing player who is holding the ball.( Opposing player movement indicated by black lines).
When there is 2 Liverpool players going for the ball , winning the ball back is much more easier. It would really put the opposing player who is having the ball under great pressure.
In a defensive set up , the area of responsibility for the defensive midfielder is indicated by the rectangular box in the next diagram.He/she is expected to respond to any threats as indicated by the rectangle box.
If the defensive midfielder fails in his/her duty, naturally the back-line defenders will be put under tremendous pressure to defend the goal.
The defensive midfielder’s job is not an easy one.He/she holds the key to the team’s performance. To be a good defensive midfielder , he/she firstly needs to be very proactive. He/she must be very intelligent to read and anticipate the game.
The defensive midfielder should also posses great stamina and determination.He/she should also have the skills to be able to give good clean hard tackles, be able to win aerial challenge, keep possession of the ball and be able to distribute the ball to his fellow team mates.
