So another season comes to a close for us Liverpool fans, at the age of 21 it is the most exciting league campaign I’ve ever witnessed from my team and I am immensely proud of the achievement of our squad this season.
The question everybody is asking now is can we continue that form next season? Will we make the top four again? Is the expectation too much? How will we cope with Champions League games and Premier League games in the same week?
The benefit to this is that Rodgers has known that we’d be in the Champions League for some weeks now, it wasn’t decided on the last day, we were guaranteed a top 3 finish in the last few weeks of the season so he could already push on and get his plan together for what he wants from this team next season.
I don’t think us Liverpool fans should get too excited at the hope of another Premier League campaign like the one we’ve just witnessed, two games a week throughout the winter months won’t be easy and we’ll need to make sure we keep the key players who cannot miss a game fit.
We need to make sure that this top four finish wasn’t a fluke, that we’re not going to be another Tottenham and just have one season of glory then go back to the depths of despair. I’m aware they finished 4th and we finished 2nd but still, other teams around us will progress, we need to progress too.
This is a key summer for transfer targets and we need to rack them up quickly before some of their prices in-fluctuate due to the World Cup. We don’t want another El Hadji Diouf & Salif Diao on our hands. We need to look for determined, committed players. Not those that are just out to earn a healthy wage.
Players coming back off loan will help, the likes of Andre Wisdom from Derby and Fabio Borini coming back from Sunderland. Both having very successful periods at those respective clubs.
Bringing in some youngsters may help too, I believe a few of the U21 squad are ready to make the step up to the 1st team, allow them to settle in, bring them on for the last 20 minutes of games if we’re comfortable.
The big names in Europe may well spend unfathomable amounts of money on players but they’re always looking to bring youth through as well, look at Real Madrid with Carvajal, Jese Rodriguez & Alvaro Morata and Barcelona with Montoya & Sergi Roberto. We too need to learn how to do this, give youth a chance, it’s not always about signing the next potential Ronaldo or Messi. What about the next Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard or Jamie Carragher in the U21 squad who are dying to get out there and give their all for our club?
Of course we also need to sign some experience & quality to go with this, it would be stupid to suggest we don’t, I just don’t believe that signing a lot of players is what’s needed, a nice balance between promoting some youth and buying in talent is the key for us to make sure we’re back up with the top four again next season.
The World cup is just a few weeks away don’t miss the opportunity to engage in some world cup betting of course your safest bet is on teams that have Liverpool players in their line ups.
