Five reasons why Liverpool should give Steven Gerrard a new contract

The captain is out of contract next summer and has hinted at an exit.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has declared that he will play on beyond the end of this season and if the Reds choose not to offer him a new contract he will move on.

Whilst the 34-year-old’s form this term may not not be as impressive as 2013/14 the skipper still has a lot to offer and here are five reasons why we think the Merseysiders would be foolish not to give Gerrard a new deal.

Experience in a crisis

Brendan Rodgers has built a very young squad at Anfield and while that is exciting for the future of the club, when things get a little tricky it is the more experienced heads that everyone looks to.

Not many have more experience than Gerrard – who has been considered a world-class talent for the past decade – and the younger players will benefit from his presence.

Attracting world-class talent

With Luis Suarez no longer on Merseyside the so-called ‘big’ names are a little depleted and with the reputation that the captain holds he could prove pivotal in attracting new talent.

The Reds have been linked with some of the best players in Europe in recent times, but those stars will need to be convinced why playing for the club is the right choice for them and Gerrard could be crucial in the negotiation process.

Still the best passer in the team

The veteran now sits in a much deeper role in front of the back four, but like Juventus ace Andrea Pirlo this does not mean he cannot utilise his fantastic array of passing.

Not only are there no better passers of the ball in the squad there are few better in the entire Premier League.

Jordan Henderson’s development

Many – including Gerrard himself – are tipping Henderson to fill his very big boots when the midfield ace finally hangs up his boots and as good as the 24-year-old is his development is not yet complete.

The England international has greatly improved as a student to the captain and will keep benefiting for as long as he is at the club.

Curse of the ex-player

This may seem a little silly, but as Chelsea found out to their cost this term letting go of one of your most influential players can come back and haunt you.

Despite joining MLS franchise New York City FC, Frank Lampard is back in England on-loan at Manchester City and scored against the Blues in their league encounter earlier in 2014/15.

It would probably be even harder for all involved to watch Gerrard net against his boyhood club.
