Steven Gerrard MLS: Could Reds skipper join Raul in New York…

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is now being linked with a move to the United States and the MLS, as the debate continues over whether he will sign a new contract with his boyhood club.

As the Daily Mail explains, Gerrard made it clear earlier this week that if Liverpool don’t offer him a new contract beyond this season he wants to play on elsewhere – and has no intention of retiring.

The 34-year-old could be open to move to America, with New York Cosmos a possible destination. The franchise competes in the North American Soccer League, technically a step below the MLS, but recently signed former Real Madrid striker Raul.

Cosmos supremo Rick Parry knows Gerrard and his representatives well from his stint as chief executive at Liverpool, and would love to pull off another major coup by adding the Reds’ skipper to his squad.

Although Raul is the club’s designated player, who earns outside the salary cap, there could be ways and means of offering Gerrard a deal good enough to consider, as the Cosmos seek to become bigger than the two MLS franchises in the Big Apple, New York City and New York Red Bulls.

However, the source adds that other clubs in the States will also be attracted by the possibility of luring Gerrard, with David Beckham’s former team, LA Galaxy a possibility.

If he does decide to move on this summer, Gerrard could also be interested in a move to another Premier League club, with Manchester City keeping tabs on the situation.
