Liverpool player ratings against Real Madrid: much-changed Reds impress despite defeat

Liverpool player ratings against Real Madrid…

Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool – A solitary goal from Karim Benzema was enough to condemn the Reds to a third successive Champions League defeat, as they were beaten for the second time in three weeks by the defending European Champions.

But Brendan Rodgers’ side will take heart from their performance, which included stand out performances from several of the club’s lesser stars, including goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and defender Kolo Toure.

Read the full Liverpool ratings below:

GK) Simon Mignolet – 8

Several excellent saves from the Belgian goalkeeper, particularly in the first-half, and could do nothing about the goal.

RB) Javi Manquillo – 6

Another fine performance from the young Spaniard, who defended well and got forward to support attacks.

LB) Alberto Moreno – 7

Got forward down the left time after time, and was impressive throughout the night.

CB) Kolo Toure – 8

Looked like the Toure of old with a confident display that will have Liverpool fans wondering why he’s been unable to do it more often.

CB) Martin Skrtel – 5

A couple of very loose touches, at least one of which should have led to a Madrid goal.

CM) Lucas – 7

Battled brilliantly in front of the back four, before being replaced with twenty minutes remaining.

CM) Emre Can – 6

A decent performance from the youngster, who will have been pleased to have got his chance in such a big game.

CM) Joe Allen – 7

Another strong performance from the Brazilian, who put in the cross for the winning goal.

RW) Lazar Markovic – 6

A more encouraging performance from the young Serbian, who looked to be clean through on goal before Varane’s intervention. Replaced with 20 minutes remaining.

LW) Adam Lallana – 6

A quiet night from the former Saints midfielder, who did at least complete 90 minutes unscathed.

ST) Fabio Borini – 5

Chased everything bravely, but was unsurprisingly isolated up front.

Manager: Brendan Rodgers – 6

Will have raised a fair few eyebrows with his team selection, but has every right to be proud of his team’s efforts.

Subs:

1) Steven Gerrard – 6 – Replaced Lucas and took on the same role in front of the back four

2) Raheem Sterling – 6 – Caused a few problems with his pace late on

3) Philippe Coutinho – 5 – Struggled to make much of an impression during his time on the pitch
