Glen Johnson England career in doubt after Roy Hodgson omits Liverpool man from squad

Glen Johnson, England right back.

We may soon have to insert the word ‘former’ into that sentence – Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson has omitted the Liverpool defender from his latest squad, citing Johnson’s lack of regular football as a key factor.

“He has a situation at Liverpool where he sometimes plays, sometimes doesn’t,” said Hodgson in his press conference, and in truth it’s hard to argue – even from a Reds fan’s perspective.

Johnson hasn’t played for England since the World Cup, and hamstring trouble has meant the current campaign has been an interrupted one.

The 30 year-old has not yet been selected for three consecutive games this season, and with doubt surrounding his Liverpool future too given his contract expires in June, Johnson’s career is at somewhat of a crossroads.

With Javi Manquillo and Jon Flanagan offering serious competition at Anfield (when the latter returns from injury), and Nathaniel Clyne and Calum Chambers challenging to start for England, Johnson has a real fight on his hands to maintain a starting role with both club and country.
