Mamadou Sakho promises Liverpool leadership upon injury return…

Liverpool centre back Mamadou Sakho has promised to become a defensive leader once he returns to the team following injury. The Frenchman has missed ten games due to a thigh strain.

Reports in the Daily Mirror explain that Liverpool have managed just two clean sheets in their 17 games this campaign and the £20m signing of Dejan Lovren has not tightened up their leaky backline.

But Sakho has promised to provide the authority they need at the back, starting with the game against Crystal Palace which follows the international break.

Sakho, who is desperate to show manager Brendan Rodgers what he can do after a slow start to the season, remains the youngest-ever captain in France’s Ligue 1 after skippering Paris St Germain at 17 and says leadership is a natural part of his game.

“For me it comes naturally,” he said. “There are different kinds of leaders technical leaders, dressing room leaders, psychological leaders.

“I’d rather keep my personal objectives to myself so people don’t think I’m too pretentious. But I am a very ambitious person. I have set personal objectives. The team has set some too and they are quite similar.

“Everything I’ve accomplished has helped me gather experience, but now I must move on and look forward. This is the next step in my career, a new experience which allows me to grow.”
