Five realistic striker targets for Liverpool in the January transfer window

Five realistic striker targets for Liverpool in the January window…

The poor form of Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert, the injury to Daniel Sturridge and the departure of Luis Suarez have all been contributing factors towards Liverpool’s poor form so far this season.

From the quartet still remaining at Anfield, just three goals have been produced, with only one of those coming in the Premier League, and it seems inevitable that Brendan Rodgers will seek out a new striker in the January window.

Here are five realistic striker targets for the Reds in the upcoming market:

5) Seydou Doumbia (CSKA Moscow)

The CSKA Moscow striker was most recently linked with Liverpool on Friday by the Daily Express, although we will reportedly face competition from Chelsea if we pursue this option.

The Ivory Coast international caught the eye with two goals against Manchester City in the Champions League earlier this season – and while that means he would be cup-tied in that competition – it is thought that CSKA would make him available for the right price.

4) Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (Schalke)

The Dutch forward is out of contract with the German club at the end of the season, and was engulfed in speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League during October.

The Daily Mirror recently suggested that the player had entered negotiations over a new contract, but if those talks were to break down, he could be available for as little as £4m in the January window. Proven quality at the highest level, but does he still have the legs?

3) Andre-Pierre Gignac  (Marseille)

Liverpool face stiff competition to land the Frenchman. Recent reports from talkSPORT claimed that Dynamo Moscow have joined the race, with Arsenal already another potential suitor.

The 28-year-old has been in fine form so far this season, scoring 10 goals in 13 appearances, but his age means he would only be a short term solution to Liverpool’s issues, while there are question marks over whether he would take to the Premier League.

2) Jackson Martinez (Porto)

It’s a similar story for another 28-year-old, Jackson Martinez, who has been a huge success during his time at Porto, with 72 goals in 107 games since his arrival in 2012.

The Colombian was heavily linked with Liverpool earlier this month, when it was reported by the Daily Express revealed a hint from the player that he was expecting to receive a lucrative offer from Brendan Rodgers. While those reports appear to be wide of the mark, Liverpool’s interest is believed to be genuine.

1) Saido Berahino (West Bromwich Albion)

The Daily Mail believes that the West Brom youngster is top of Liverpool’s wish list. Berahino has scored seven Premier League goals for the Baggies so far this season, making him the top scoring Englishman in the division.

Albion are desperate to hang on to their top scorer, while Tottenham’s interest will also act as a potential stumbling block for the Reds, with the 21-year-old set to spark a bidding war starting at around £15m.
