Carragher thinks Gerrard should be used as a ‘lethal weapon’ from the bench

Will the skipper appreciate these words from the now Sky pundit…?

Jamie Carragher thinks his former captain Steven Gerrard should be used more sparingly by Brendan Rodgers, he wrote in his Daily Mail column.

As we all know, Liverpool haven’t won for five matches, and questions have been raised over whether legendary Gerrard should be an automatic starter anymore.

The manager has used him in the anchorman role he played so brilliantly in last term, and a more advanced less disciplined role – but he’s not been able to take many games by the scruff of the neck.

“Brendan Rodgers and his medical staff have done a superb job managing Steven’s fitness. Now they must manage the amount of matches he plays,” Carragher began.

“Brendan, himself, admitted in midweek that Steven can’t play three games in a week to the level he would like. Steven will have had similar thought.

“But that isn’t a bad thing for Steven. Can you imagine the reaction inside Anfield with 30 minutes of a tight game remaining and seeing No. 8 getting stripped for action? With space to exploit and energy to change the game, he could be a lethal weapon.”

Carragher arguably makes a valid point. Gerrard’s arrival from the bench, especially at Anfield, could inspire both the crowd and his teammates – and help us in the final 20 minutes of games – which have usually been lethargic and stale this term.

Having played the full 90 against Ludogorets on Wednesday, Gerrard could be rested for either the Stoke game today (unlikely) or the Leicester City game on Tuesday evening.

Both are critically important to getting our season back on track.
