Five former Liverpool players are currently plying their trade in the Indian Super League, the football equivalent of cricket’s IPL. How many of these stars could still be playing at a higher level? How many do you miss at Anfield? Let us know in the comment section below.

5) Jermaine Pennant (FC Pune City)

Pennant joined Liverpool from Birmingham City in 2006, and made 81 appearances during two and a half years at Anfield. The former Arsenal man joined Stoke City in 2010, after brief spells with Portsmouth and Real Zaragoza, but was released mid-way through last season. He joined Pune on a short term deal earlier this year. He has played four games so far this season, and is yet to score or create a goal.

4) Josemi (Atletico de Kolkata)

Josemi joined Liverpool from Malaga in 2004, and made 35 appearance in 18 months at Anfield. The defender joined Villareal in 2006, but his career has faded out – spending time in Greece for the last four years. He’s been an ever present for Kolkata so far this season, playing eleven times.

3) Nicolas Anelka (Mumbai City FC)

Anelka spent a season on loan at Liverpool, during the 2001-02 campaign. The former Arsenal man scored five times in 22 appearances. His career has since included spells with Manchester City, Bolton, Chelsea, and West Brom as well as time in Turkey, China and Italy. He’s played three times for Mumbai this season, scoring twice.

2) David James (Kerala Blasters FC)

The former England goalkeeper played over 200 league games for the Reds between 1992 and 1999. His career also included spells with Aston Villa, West Ham, Man City, Portsmouth and Bristol City. James, who was recently declared bankrupt, has played ten games for Kerala, for whom he also acts as manager.

1) Luis Garcia (Atletico de Kolkata)

One of the heroes of Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League campaign, Garcia joined the Reds from Barcelona the previous summer. He played 122 games in three season, scoring 31 goals. He returned to former club Atletico Madrid in 2007, before spells in Greece and Mexico. He has scored twice in nine appearances for Kolkata so far this season.
